    Matthew Fox is an internationally known lecturer and author who has 
    devoted his life to reclaiming the Creation Spiritual tradition.  
    Creation Spirituality stresses humanity's potential to act divinely 
    -- both through acts of compassion and acts that create beauty.  It 
    holds as central the sacredness, the goodness, and the 
    inter-relatedness of all creation.  
    
    As such, Creation Spirituality stakes out ground quite different from 
    the Fall/Redemption spiritual tradition which emphasizes humanity's 
    basic sinfulness.  The Creation-centered tradition is understood and 
    lived out through the four-fold way suggested in the theological 
    writings of Meister Eckhart:
    
    1.	Via Positiva or Befriending Creation -- Our first awakening to 
    God is in the beauty, glory, and power of creatin itself.  For 
    Eckhart, both the cosmos and ourselves serve as microcosm and images 
    of the creator.
    
    2.	Via Negativa or Letting Go and Letting Be -- "The self does not 
    grow by addition, but by subtraction", according to Meister Eckhart.  
    Path two teaches us to let go of even our images of God.
    
    3.	Via Creativa or Befriending our Divinity -- a path of 
    break-through, mystic union, and birth as a child of God.  The 
    experience that births our own creativity.
    
    4.	Via Transformativa or Befriending the New Creation -- Eckhart 
    insisted that creativity be employed for personal and social 
    transformation.  Justice and compassion were his criteria for 
    authentic development.
    
    Through lecture, discussion, creative activity, and movement, this 
    workshop will explore the creation-centered way.

    Understanding symbolism by reenactment is at the heart of the Christmas
    Peace Pilgrimage, a 10-mile walk from Nazareth to Bethlehem,
    Pennsylvania.  The pilgrimage, in its 31st year, will take place on
    Dec. 15.  The proclamation establishing the pilgrimage, signed by the
    mayors of the two cities, refers to the journey of the Holy Family as a
    time of dedication and purpose, anticipating the birth of Jesus as
    personification of God's desire to bring peace to Earth.  The
    pilgrimage begins at 12:30 p.m. in Nazareth, includes three rest stops,
    and ends with a candlelight procession into Bethlehem, where a simple
    supper will be served.  At that time, Myron S. Augsburger will speak. 
    He is a 25-year veteran of preaching for peace in the United States,
    Canada, Europe, Africa, and Latin America.  He is president of the
    Christian College Coalition and adjunct professor of theology at

	RE: .6 A not so small nit. Having travelled the distance on a bicycle
	I can tell you that it's a lot farther then 10 miles between 
	Nazareth and Bethlehem. I heard about this walk some years ago but
	I don't remember if the whole way is walked or if just some of it.
	From what I heard though is is a great time and rewarding for those
	who take part.

    acclaimed Bill Moyers documentary (?) on the song "Amazing Grace"

My lover* and I saw "War, Women and Song" last Saturday night.  It was an
impressively professional performance.

The word 'women' in the title, it was explained, was used in the generic
sense.  Therefore, all women and men were included in its usage. 8-]

Most of the songs and patter were cleverly satirical:  'There Is Nothin'
Like A War' (using Richard Rogers melody, "There Is Nothin' Like A Dame")
performed by the ones who benefit most from a military economy: the Star
Whores; namely, in order of appearance, Marietta Martin, Rock W. International,
Honey Well, and General Dynamix. ;-}

"Washerwoman God" and "Church and State" were particularly amusing.

Other segments pierced the heart achingly.  'The Willing Conscript,' by Tom
Paxton, and, 'Herstory,' come to mind.

Given the amount of traffic in the various religious groups, I feel

 FREE CATHOLICS is a forum for Catholics who wish to discuss their 
discipleship to Jesus Christ in terms of the Catholic approach to 
Christianity.  Free Catholics are Catholics who wish to discuss 
Catholicism and important issues related to Catholicism without 
casting anathemas or aspersions on those who are not connected to the 
See of Rome, the See of Canterbury, the Eastern Patriarch, or any 
other base.  Free Catholics who wish to express their Catholicism 
_in terms_ of their relationship to their home base (agreement with 
papal doctrine, Eastern doctrine, Prayer Book doctrine, etc.) are
FREE and encouraged to do so.  We wish only, by our name, to maintain 
a flame-free environment with regard to these issues.  We realize that 
discussions on these issues (apostolic succession, etc.) are crucial 
to discussions of ecumenism, thus polite discussion is actively 
encouraged; it is only when anathemas or aspersions are cast on the 
character or Catholicism of other individuals/groups that FREE 
CATHOLICS wishes to reaffirm its name.
 
 In a general sense, then, a Free Catholic is a disciple of Jesus 
Christ who expresses his or her Christianity in a way that accords 
with Catholicism.  Catholic, meaning "universal," was first used by 
St. Ignatius of Antioch (d. 107) writing to the Smyrnean Church:  
"Wheresoever the bishop shall appear, there let the people be, even as 
where Jesus is, there is the Catholic Church" (Smyr. VIII, 2).  
St. Pacianus, bishop of Barcelona (c. fourth century), wrote, 
"Christian is my name; Catholic is my surname."  As used by the Church 
Fathers, Catholic means the true Church consisting of the body of the 
faithful who recite the same creeds, belong to the same Church, have 
the same institutions, clergy, and hierarchy and who follow the same 
teachings of Christ as given to his apostles.  Clearly, many Churches 
fall within this broad definition of Catholic.
 
 In keeping with our name, FREE CATHOLICS wishes to extend membership 
in this forum to non-Catholics who are interested in Catholic beliefs 
and practices, however, full-blown debates between Catholics and 
those who choose other methods of expressing their Christianity 
are best carried out in soc.religion.christian or talk.religion.misc 
Internet newsgroups.  We hope that the availability of this mailing 
list will not diminish the contributions Christians make there.  The 
reason is simple:  we Catholics simply want a place where we can kick 
up our feet around the fireside and discuss what it means to be a 
Catholic in a relaxed atmosphere.
 
 These guidelines are not intended to be restrictive but to help the
list fill its intended purpose.  Comments and suggestions for changes
to these are welcome from all members.

Catholic and a member of Saint Bede's Episcopal Church.  I am a 
lay reader and lay chalicist (licensed).  I am a wife and mother of 
three young children (7, 6, and 3).  I was raised in the Roman 
Catholic Church but became a Catholic Episcopalian for various and sundry 
reasons I won't go into here.  I am a member of the Episcopalian 
Society of Mary and am currently a member of the Mother of Our Saviour 
Ward in the Diocese of Atlanta.  The Society of Mary is ecumenical and 
is open to members of all Churches; there are Wards in the Anglican 
Churches (mainly), the Roman Catholic Church, the Lutheran Church, and 
the Baptist Church (really).  I am a Philosophy/English major at 
Georgia State University whose goal is eventually to attend Candler, a 
theology school located on the Emory University campus.  I'm an 
occasional computer consultant.

	Noonday Singers to Perform at St. Matthew's Methodist Church

	The Noonday Singers will perform spirituals, civil rights songs, and 
music of Central America and South Africa at a concert to benefit Noonday 
Farm and Fifth District Citizens Concerned About Central America (FDCCCA). 

	Donations collected at the Saturday afternoon concert will support
the continued work of Noonday Farm, an interfaith community in north-central
Massachusetts that grows food and provides hospitality for the homeless and 
elderly, as well as FDCCCA, a local organization of citizens working to promote
justice and human rights in Central America.

	The afternoon will include a 20-minute slide presentation on the 
celebration of the peace accords in El Salvador and what U.S. citizens can do 
to support the peace process. The event is from 2:00--4:00 p.m. at St. Matthew's
Methodist Church, 435 Central St., in West Action.

    Thanks for the note on Noon-day farm singers".  My wife and I went to
    the event and it was great music and informational on events in
    S. Africa, El Salvador and Nicarrauga.  We also got to see an old 
    friend from ANTS who taught Ministry of the Laity courses several
    years ago.  He and his wife and child are one of the three families
    living fulltime on the farm.

	We had 12 people attend the presentation of Wallace Shawn's "The
Fever" last Saturday evening.  Our guests included neighbors, coworkers,
people from church, social activists and family.

	The play is disturbing.  It is, at times, as aching, as wrenching,
and as nightmarish as a disease-induced fever.  It is disconcertingly, pit-
of-the-stomach honest.

	Some may be familiar with "My Dinner with Andre," the screenplay which
Shawn both wrote and acted in.  "The Fever" is composed in a style similarly
conversational and every bit as intriguing.

	The play is at a loss for answers.  It virtually disintegrates all
the cliche solutions to poverty and systemic oppression, and then leaves
its audience empty-handed and wanting for a new possibility.  The play ends
with the implication that its author has found himself in the same situation.

    Wow.  With that context and delivery similar to "My Dinner with Andre", 
    that must have been one *powerful* play, Richard.

	Another fascinating facet of the "The Fever" is that it can
be delivered by either a man or a woman without changing a single word
of the script.

	I understand there are some future plans that Shawn is developing,
but I have no details of them at this time.

        The following is a schedule of a summer outreach to the north 
       central Massachusetts communities of Townsend, Lunenburg and 
       Fitchburg. These are concerts of contemporary Christian music 
       in the style of Micheal Card, Harvest, Glad and Wayne Watson
       including some of the older standards. 
        So bring a blanket or some lawn chairs and a friend to enjoy

    I wonder why it is that  Roman Catholics seek out non-Christian eastern 
    religions for instruction on meditation when the Eastern Orthodox Church 
    has experts on it? Not that there isn't anything to learn from Buddhist, 
    but meditation in the Judeo/Christian tradition has been practiced for 
    as long, if not longer than the religions of the far east. The mechanics 
    of meditation between Buddhism and Judeo/Christian religions may be the 
    same,  but the purpose is vastly different.

    	Within Christianity, many factions practice meditation.  Quaker
    worship can legitimately be perceived as corporate meditation.
    
    	I think it might add another dimension to meditate with a Buddhist.

peace, but also to remember the life and contributions of the late Rev.
Douglas Wasson, peacemaker.

When the first World Peace Meditation occurred Dec. 31, 1986, there were
millions of people across the globe who took an hour at 12 noon, Greenwich
mean time, to pray and meditate for peace.  Over the next few years,
miracles happened.  The Cold War cooled down, the Berlin Wall came down,
experiments in democracy began to spring up all over the world, and South
Africa released Nelson Mandella.  As power realigned, the experiments in
democracy became troubled.  Simple answers were not available.  People were
suffering from hunger.  Nationalism, racism, and ethnic strife exploded
into wars.

It is time to earnestly turn our hearts and minds to actively pursue peace
within ourselves, within our relationships and throughout the world.

Thursday, 14-April, 9:00 EDT, on CNN, Larry King Live - Larry King is
going to have a talk with Billy Graham.

	August 6th marks the 49th anniversary of the first atomic bomb
ever to be detonated over a populated area at Hiroshima, Japan.  Three days
later, on August 9th, 1945, the second atomic blast delivered by U.S. forces
took place at Nagasaki, Japan.

	A gathering in commemoration of these events will be held on August
6, 1994, at 4:00 pm, at the gazebo on the Pioneers Museum campus, 215 S. Tejon
Street, Colorado Springs.

	Featured will be three speakers sharing their own first-hand
insights regarding this historically significant period:

Rev. Bob Fortenbaugh of Fountain, a retired United Methodist pastor, who
as a young engineer was engaged in the Manhattan Project, the government
program dedicated to developing the bomb;

Jim Gibney of Colorado Springs, a journalist with the Denver Post News
Bureau, who in 1945 was a gunnery officer with the Air Force assigned
to photograph the aftermath at Hiroshima;

Fusako "Grace" Kawahara of Denver, the only known Hiroshima survivor
living in the region.

	Sponsored by the Pikes Peak Justice and Peace Commission, this
commemoration will be open to the public at no charge.

Because of a generous gift from a parishioner, the Parish of The Advent
has been able to arrange for a 20-piece orchestra to accompany soloists
and the Choir of the Church of the Advent in a performance of the Mozart
Requiem in the context of the Liturgy of All Souls' Day, tonight at 6:30 pm.
We are located at 30 Brimmer Street in Boston.

I prepared the following information for some friends who are not Anglicans
who plan to attend, and I thought I would share it with you.

Classical requiem masses differ from other classical masses in a number
of ways:  1. A requiem includes the Kyrie, Sanctus, Benedictus qui venit,
and Agnus Dei, but neither the Gloria nor the Creed.  These parts of the
mass are known as the "Ordinary".  2. The words of the Agnus Dei are changed
from "have mercy upon us" to "grant them rest".  3. The composer provides
musical settings for some or all of the mass Propers: the Introit, the
Gradual, the Tract, the Sequence, the Offertory, and the Communion.  The
Mozart Requiem (and possibly most classical requiems; I'm not an expert
in this area) does not include the Gradual and Tract.  When compositions
for propers are not provided, the propers are sung by the choir in their
traditional plainsong modes, as with other masses.  The times from one
particular recording of the Mozart Requiem are shown below.

A requiem is a service of thanksgiving (eucharistia) to God for his
redemption of earthly lives that have come to an end.  It is an offering
in which joy and sorrow are mixed, for while we say an earthly farewell,
we know that the dead live in Christ.  In the Holy Eucharist, which
transcends all of time and space, the Church on Earth is joined with
the Church in Heaven, and we join our prayers and praises to theirs.
We pray for them, as we believe that they pray for us, so that all may
be strengthened in their lives of service to God.

The basic structure of a Requiem Mass and an English translation follows:

    In mid-May 1945 we celebrated VE Day with street parties all over
    Britain.
    
    Victory had been anticipated for some time and plans were well laid.
    Those kids who had been evacuated to safer places had been returning
    home for a few months (I was repatriated from Hebden Bridge in York-
    shire to Brighton in March).
    
    On party day, our street was decorated with buntings and streamers and
    a long table was laid out. Rationing, for one day, seemed to be non-
    existant and cakes, with real cream, lemonade and juices were in
    abundance. Loudspeakers blasted patriotic music (National Anthem, White
    Cliffs of Dover, etc.). Fireworks were going off the whole day.
    
    The girls all wore party dresses magically cut down from granny's
    wardrobe and (most of) the boys had found non-utility trousers and
    shirts for the occasion. I saw more colour, and heard more laughter, on
    one day than I had heard in the whole of the previous 5 years.
    
    The noise was terrific. Until our local vicar came to bless the
    victory, the table and all present. For these few minutes, you could
    have heard a pin drop.
    
    Whenever I recall that day, I remember most vividly these few minutes
    of silence: it was the first time in my life that I felt truly safe.

	Hi Everyone!


		Well, we have gotten the Walk organizing started! With
	Digital not doing much of anything this year, we will have to
	do the bulk of it.

		In 1994 we raised $38+k, with 138 walkers. In 1995 we
	raised $4300+, with 21 walkers. Last year we had one person who
	came in with $1+k. And he wasn't planning on walking due to an
	injury.

		In 1996 we have got to do better. Not for Digital's 
	sake, but for those who could really use the money. 

		Site coordinators are really needed badly. Without
	them, it is going to be hard to get the message out.

		You're probably asking what would be required? That's
	an easy question to answer. We need people to hang posters and
	put pledge sheets somewhere where people can get to them. If
	that was all you did, then that would be fine. If you planned 
	an event, then you would probably have to have a meeting. But
	that is totally up to you. 

		HLO is having a contest for kids, where they draw a
	picture dealing with AIDS. The winner gets a t-shirt, and 
	everyone else gets their pictures on a poster. The t-shirt 
	will also be given to anyone who walks.

		Gear has said they would donate a jacket to us for the
	person who gains the most money from pledges. That will be
	determined by the person who comes up with the most money at
	pre-registration. (which looks to be in Littleton and Hudson
	this year)

		So all that is left is getting site coordinators for the 
	various facilities. We do have people who said they would cover the
	following facilities:

		ZKO1, ZKO3, TAY2, MRO1, NQO & HLO1-3


		If you are not at one of these facilities, and you can hang
	some posters, please let me know so I can add you to the list.

1,000 DAYS OF PREPARATION FOR 1,000 YEARS OF PEACE, the inaugural event,
will be celebrated Saturday, April 5, beginning at 2:00 pm at the site of
the veterans monument located on the east side of Memorial Park in Colorado
Springs.

The culmination of several months of planning at the local grassroots level,
this event will mark the beginning to the countdown of 1,000 days to the
millennium, a time being designated to sow seeds of peace for a new and
unprecedented era of peace.

Reflecting a broad spectrum of traditions, including Roman Catholic, 
United Methodist, Baha'i, Moslem, Hindu, and the Earth religions,
the program will incorporate the prayers, songs, and customs of a
variety of faiths.  The single unifying imperative is that peace must
be a priority, one vigorously pursued in our hearts and in our homes,
among neighbors and among nations.

In addition to musicians, dancers and vocalists, Pat Washburn will
speak on "Doing the Works of Peace."  Washburn is a long-time peace 
educator and advocate, adjunct professor at Iliff School of Theology,
and the Director of Religious Education at First Universalist Church
of Denver.

Organizers hope that the 1,000 day period will be punctuated with a
new event every 100 days up to and including Saturday, January 1, 2000.

To date 1,000 Days of Preparation for 1,000 Years of Peace has been
endorsed by the American Friends Service Committee-Colorado office,
Baha'i Community of Colorado Springs, Benedictine Sisters of Benet
Hill, the Bijou Community, Church of the Brethren, Colorado Council
of Churches, Diocesan Pastoral Council of the Catholic Diocese of
Colorado Springs, Rev. Donald Dunn, Giving Tree Montessori School,
Bishop Richard Hanifen of the Catholic Diocese of Colorado Springs,
Rev. Harvey Joyner, Mayor-elect Mary Lou Makepeace, Pikes Peak
Interfaith Council, Pikes Peak Justice & Peace Commission, Rocky
Mountain Conference of the United Methodist Church, and Sisters
of Charity of Cincinnati, Ohio.

The event is open to the public and free of charge.  Families with
children are welcome.  In case of inclement weather, the event will
be relocated to the auditorium of First United Methodist Church,
420 N. Nevada.
