    It's with *great* embarrassment I have to report that all of my
    Disney Mysteries are still missing (hey it *is* a mystery).
    Sometime between Christmas and January 3rd they were most
    likely placed on a pile a papers (maybe Chistmas wrap) and 
    tossed into the trash. By the time I discovered them missing, 
    the trash man had come to visit.  sigh.  
    
    My clue contributor, Jason is currently at EuroDisney and will
    be back on January 18th.  I'll begin the contest just as soon 
    as I can get new input from him.  
    
    Oh, the shame...

    Well, they say the best way of finding a lost item is to either
    accuse someone of 'stealing' it or embarrass oneself by freely
    admitting you lost it.  Last night after embarrassing myself in
    this file, I went home and found a message that Jason had called.
    I then had to embarrassingly admit to him that I had lost all
    his hard work. :^(
    
    But...since he's a terrific guy he said "no problem" and set me 
    up with our first mystery.
    
    But...before I begin, I got to tell you what great luck Jason has. He
    was over in EuroDisney when a gameshow-like attraction was announced.
    He joined the crowd of thousands to get a better look and a chance
    to participate.  Sixteen "contestants" were chosen and Jason was
    one of them.  He came in second place and won, get this...a three
    day pass to EuroDisney plus airfare on AirFrance!  First place was
    a Renault car!   
    
    Ok, contest time...

    thirteen clues and I don't have a clue!   simple question, when I hear
    the answer, will I say OH YA, why didn't I think of that, or will the
    answer require a specfic region knowledge?  example if its something
    specific to a theme park like E-Disney, would I have had to go there to
    know the answer?

    Ed, I'm glad you asked.  
    
    The answer is yes, it is a region specific (EuroDisney to more
    specific) attraction 'thing'.
    
    This is a very tough mystery for anyone who hasn't been to
    EuroDisney and even then you probably wouldn't know the answer
    unless you actually went 'in' the attraction or had a Michelon
    guide from the park (hint).
    
    At this point I'd like to invite the moderators (who are only
    allowed to participate in the first 5 clues), to give it a try.
    
    You have to remember that I was in a bind. I lost all the mysteries
    and Jason (the clue-man) was still at EuroDisney playing. When he
    arrived home and heard I needed a mystery ASAP, guess what park
    was foremost on his mind?
    
    Because this year's contest originates from the other side of the
    continent (CA instead of NH), most of the future mysteries will be 
    more general (i.e characters, people, places) instead of obscure 
    attractions in far off lands.  There will be however a real toughie
    thrown in from time to time.

    Place:  a location, real or imagined
    
    Person: real, animated person or character, audioanimitron "person"

    Well I've been to EDL but I'm stumped so far. I'll have to give it some

    Unfortunately when I watched the Ducks play the Kings last week on
    ESPN, I didn't catch all their names ;-)   Perhaps your clues could
    lead us towards the "correct" name...  You have to agree that with
    this set of clues there hasn't been a whole lot of response... not
    that many people watch hockey... and even those of us who do may have
    spouses that don't like it so (I) can't watch it as much as I'd like

    The city in the Magic Kingdom IS the same model as what used to be in
    Disneyland.  Now, our People Mover goes through the "Super Speed
    Tunnel" from "The World of Tron" (Some cheesy visuals and a couple of
    fans blowing air for effect).
    
    BTW, I don't know what they call it now, but when they first starting
    showing it in Disneyland, they called the city

    Gang,

    Jodi will attest that I'm an extremely literal person. I'm merely
    monitoring this contest now, following it like a computer program to
    its conclusion. I'm not an expert at Disneystuff, so it would be unwise
    for me to try to interpret anything. Note, since I've seen the answer
    and since Jodi requested "(full name, please)", I'm encouraged to
    insist that the answer be exact and also identify a location. For
    example, the guess "Mr. Toad's Wild Ride" is not correct anyway, but as
    it stands, it's an incomplete guess. There should be an "at Disneyland"
    or "in florida" tacked onto the end of it. 

    Free clue: none of the currently proposed solutions would be improved with
    such a location marker.
    
    Not to worry, if I muck this up, I'm sure Jodi will be glad to
    redistribute points when she gets back. Better I should let the contest
    drag on, then end it prematurely, I think.

    away. Try not to read anything into what I said, except that I'm
    largely ignorant about Disneystuff. The clues are the clues and the

    BTW, 390.289 was not incorrect because the location was missing. Though
    it mentions the right attraction (or close) in the title, it guessed
    the wrong one.

    I'm back from a funfilled week in sunny/rainy Washington state.
    
    Poor John...he really is a stickler for details which is why I
    asked for the full name (probably should have asked for location
    as well).  oh well.
    
    During my week away, our entire office moved to a new building.
    This basically means it could be days before my office is up and
    running again so I'm going to have to submit the clues from home
    until I'm all squared away.  Since mornings are not my forte, I'll
    probably be submitting them at night (at home...starting now). 
    
    Thank you John for your help. I can't believe you were so kind to 
    send me 'welcome back' mail without including a single whimper. ;^)

    I have updated the 1994 Disney Contest basenote (390.0)
    but since basenotes are difficult to replace, I have 
    changed the basenote to 390.1.
    
    This new note adds the description of "person", "place" and "thing"
    which used to be in this note (391).
    
    It changes the 'daily' (for the clues) to weekdays only.
    
    I'd like to see moderators participating more, so I am giving
    them a chance to guess up to the first 10 days (clues).
    
    I changed the final contest date to Friday, December 2, 1994.
    
    And last but not least, I described the contest prize. 
    Jason has collected a lot of Disney trivia and paraphenalia
    over the years.  He has offered to share part of his 
    collection with the contest winner.

    over the 1994 Disney Contest.  I'm confindent he'll
    do a great job (hey, how could ya do any worse than me?).
    
    As far as I know the rules and prize will remain the
    same and Jason and I will still be involved to some point.

    	I really feel like I'm beating a dead horse here.   The real
    frustrating part is that in order to correctly solve the puzzle, you
    must identify the person's middle initial.  I don't think the person in
    question's middle initail is quite as well known as say Walter E
    Disney, or Richard M. Nixon.  
    	I'm thinking about awarding points to the person who correctly
    identified the first and last name but left out the middle initail.

requested place was in multip parks [of course not wdw].

    Actually John I've been reviewing past mysteries and I've been easy
    sometimes and tough other times so I've decided to be consistently
    tough from now on.
    
    What that means is that even if someone is close they won't get credit
    unless it's exactly what I want.
    
    For instance, if I am looking for a certain Dalmation I may want a name
    instead of someone saying, "One of the 101 Dalmations?"

    I have a question on definitions. Why, in the previous contest, was it
    "I am a thing" and not "I am a person"? Since Scar is a character, that
    makes Scar a "person" by contest definitions, doesn't it? And since a
    "person" can be audioanimatronic, well, perhaps you get my drift. Of
    course, it makes me wonder how there could ever be an audioanimatronic
    "thing". If it's audioanimated, it becomes a character so it's a person.
    ??? I've always been confused by these definitions. What would the car
    be in "Who framed Roger Rabbit". Is it a "person" or "thing"?

    The Pee Wee Herman/Mel Gibson film HAD been nuked during Pee Wee's
    little legal problems, but was later reinstated.  I suspect that Disney
    realized that Pee Wee's private "activities" didn't seem to matter to 
    anyone, and it had been a popular clip.

    That's an excellant example of a "thing" that laughs. However, one of
    the other clues is that this object "seems lifelike".  In order for
    something to seem lifelike and simultaneously laugh, it must be a
    representation of some living thing which we would expect to be able to
    laugh. That limits it to being a representation of a person or an
    animal. Your example shows me how it could still be a thing. It could,
    for another example, be a lifelike statue of a man with a recording of
    laughter. But, if it moves at all, I can''t help but imagine it's
    likely to be animation or an audioanimatron and wouldn't that mean it
    was a "person"?

    I would be willing to extend the meaning of "lifelike" even to those
    fantasy objects which are realized so thoroughly it actually seems like
    they might exist. An example would be the robot pilot in "Star Tours". But
    its "lifelikeness" comes from its being an audioanimatronic character and
    thus it's also a "person" by the contest rules, isn't it?

    There's no need for you to correct my logic if it needs correcting, nor
    even to respond at all at the moment if it might give too much away. This
    is more an "Are you sure?". If you are, that's fine. It wouldn't surprise
    me at all to realize that my imagination had just overlooked another
    possibility. But I've always had a lot of trouble understanding the
    definitions, and I'd hate to reject guessing the robot pilot of Star Tours
    because I think that's a "person" and you consider it a "thing", or reject
    guessing something like your pumpkin because our understanding of the word
    "lifelike" is different. 

    Of course, it probably seems entirely moot because I really haven't been
    sharing my guesses lately. I'm still pretending like I'm playing though.

    Tim Considine was one of the Hardy Boys on the Mickey Mouse Club serial
    by the same name.  He was also the eldist son on My Three Sons (he was
    eventually married off and replaced with another son when he was

    Yes on all accounts. I thought of this mystery the other day while
    picking up some XMAS presents in a video store. I have yet to find 
    any of The Hardy Boys series or "The Nine Lives of Elfego Baca."
    
    I walked up to the counter and asked if they had any Hardy Boys.

    OK, well, phew, I'm called that's over! I've been going crazy humming
    this song in my head for the last five days. I almost don't want to
    admit this but....
    
     Since clue one I knew it was a song I used to listen to a lot
    in high school or college. By day three I thought it might be a Captain
    and Tennille song (yeah I know, my taste in music has changed a lot
    since then!). Since then, Mike you have been driving me crazy, as I
    have been singing the song in my head, but couldn't think of the title.
    So I mentioned to my husband that I had this song in my head and I
    thought it was by Cpt & Tennille. He said it sounded familiar to
    him also, but he thought it might be by Simon and Garfunkel. So that
    led me to the old albums (collector items?? antiques yet??) and sure
    enough, there it was, the last line of the song mentions Disney girls!
    
    Considering I have yet to be able to guess any of the other trivia
    answers, we can put this in the category of right time, right place. I
    must have listened to that album, hundreds of time (my parents may say
    more than that!). Of course, I'll never admit to it under oath!

What is/was an E-ticket?

    In it's earliest days, Disneyland used to charge an admission rate
    which did not include unlimited access to the rides and attractions. 
    You had the option of purchasing admission only, or a booklet that
    included coupons good for different rides.
    
    The rides were graded a (the cheapest), through E (the most popular).
    While you could use a higher grade (i.e. more valuable) ticket on a
    lesser ride, you could not combine or exchange lower-value tickets.
    Which necessitated buying more of the good ride stuff at an additional 
    cost.
    
    As part of the transition, Disney had "Gold Key" tickets that could be
    used for anything.  I still remember when the youth band I was in
    played there once.  The band director, not realizing what he was
    saying, tried to warn us against squandering the tickets, by reminding
    us that Disney only gave each person five of these, "So don't waste
    them on the MICKEY MOUSE rides."

    The ticket books were usually $5 or $10. Each booklet had about 20 or
    25 tickets. Each ticket listed the attractions that ticket was good for
    but I usually ran out of my "E" tickets real fast.
    
    The last time I saw these booklets was in 1976. I think the "E" rides 
    were Space Mountain, Pirates, and maybe The Haunted Mansion.
    
    I guess this ticket policy was abandoned for a number of reasons. My
    thoughts are:
    
      - The expense of printing, storing, and recycling the tickets added
        to park overhead. This expense was eliminated.
    
      - Cast members had to man the turnstiles and collect these tickets
        at all the attractions....another expense.
    
      - You know those booths where you can buy film or those disposable
        cameras? I know of one near FantasyLand. That's where you bought
        the tickets. I'm sure more money is made selling film and cameras
        than tickets.
    
      - Finally, I remember that when my tickets ran out I really wasn't 
        too keen about buying more tickets and often left the park. That
        meant I didn't stick around to spend my money.
    
        With the way admission runs today people stay in the parks and
        spend their money on food and trinkets. There is no worry about 
        running out of the beloved "E" ticket.

    By the way, DisneyLand charged $1 admission when it first opened in
    1955. To see an attraction you paid anywhere from 10 cents to 35 cents.
    
    Later that year (October) the first of the ticket books were used. The
    books were $2.50 each and contained 8 tickets. The only letters used
    were A-B-C. As more attractions were added the books grew to A-B-C-D-E.
    
    Disney abandoned the ticket books and re-priced their admission costs
    in 1982.

    In 1974, the first time we went to Disneyworld, there were 6 "E" rides:
    			Haunted Mansion
    			Hall Of Presidents
    			It's A Small World
    			20,000 Leagues Under The Sea
    			Pirates Of The Carribian
    			The Jungle Boat ride (forget its proper name)
    
    Space Mountain wasn't there at all.  The books contained E, D, C, B and
    A coupons, you couldn't go on all the E rides using one coupon book,
    you had to buy an additional whole book at the ticket booth at the 
    entrance to the park only.  We lucked out, arrived 4 days before
    Christmas and were about the only people in the park.  We did all the
    E rides, except one and a few of the others.  The next day we purchased
    one more coupon book, used the E ride tickets for the 6th ride and
    spent the rest of the time going on the "lessor" rides.

    Are you sure about the Hall of Presidents?
    
    When I went to WDW in September of 1975 the Hall of Presidents was a
    free attraction. That is, you did not have to use a coupon/ticket to 
    enter the attraction.
    
    When we went in June 1976 the HOP was no longer a freebie.

    Yes I'm sure, we had to use an E ticket to get in in Decmber of 1974.
    Maybe they changed it after as a test, because there were only about
    10 people in the hall the day we were there...and our group made up
    7 of those 10.  We commented at the time that although we enjoyed the
    technology, the presentation was too adult to attract families,
    especially since they would have to use an E.

    I was there in the summer of 1976 and the Hall of Presidents was
    free because it was America's bicentennial.  
    
    Mike, they may have opened the HOP as a free attraction in late '75.
    Was the Main Street Parade "America on Parade"??

    with Mickey, Donald, and Goofy marching in a fife and drum scene.
    
    Yeah...they had waived admission to the HOP due to the Bicentennial.

    I was able to see the MMR only once.  I thought it was one the best
    attractions in Fantasyland at that time.  When I returned to WDW a year 
    or two later, they pulled the plug on MMR in favor of the "Magic Journey" 
    3-D film.  I was personally disappointed in MJ.
    
    If I remember correctly, the show had Mickey Mouse conducting the orchestra
    comprised of other Disney audioaminatronic characters playing the theme 
    songs from the Disney movies.  The show had excellent lighting effects
    and music.
    
    Did they move the show to Tokyo DL ??  Wherever it went they should
    bringit back. 
    
    I do have an old postcard somewhere from the MMR ....

    I remember using a E ticket for HOP.  During the film, the projector
    went crazy for about 30 seconds.  They gave everyone exiting a new

    Yep they moved MMR to Japan. That building has been used for MAgic
    Journeys and presently TLK adventure.
    
    It would be interesting to see if they have upgraded that show since 
    many more songs have been added to the Disney archives.
    
    Some of my favorite parts of the MMR was the pieces involving the 
    3 Caballeros, Cinderella, and Alice in WOnderland.
