Conference koolit::disney

    Well after talking to one of the other coaches on my sons Little Leauge
    team, who had  just  returned from 13 days in Sunny and Hot Florida, he
    stated the it averaged around the high 80's and low 90's throughout the
    whole stay, and rained only  once.    He went on to say that the locals
    were saying that it was an  unusualy  warm  winter in Florida this year
    and instead of the normal 2 months of cold weather (Jan/Feb), they only
    had about 3 weeks total, otherwise the weather has been above normal.
    
    Well  after  looking  over  the historical data I publish  in  .0,  the
    average high in April is usualy 82, and it seems  to  be  running  5-10
    degrees above the normal high.  And while watching the national weather
    report this morning, the past 90 days in the south east have been above
    normal.
    
    Have any of you recent visitors to WDW hear the same?

I was there in January this year, and it WAS unseasonably warm.  We've been
down there before that time of year, and it usually hits 60s or a little
higher.  We were wearing shorts into the nights.  Days were in the 80s and
nights were in the 70s.  The natives were all complaining, but we LOVED it!

    	I was there from 17-Apr through 22-Apr and temperatures seemed
    normal.  The highs were in the mid 80's and the lows in the high 50's. 
    Thunderstorms threatened one day and made good their threat another but
    they moved in and out fast.  It was great shorts and tee shirt weather. 
    One day, I did wear a cotten sweater.

The first week I was there (Apr. 16-22), the weather was beautiful, in the mid
80s during the day and warm enough for shorts and short sleeves at night.  The
tv weather people were talking about "below normal" temperatures.  The second
week was evidently more normal, with temperatures around 90.  It felt even
better when I heard that the Red Sox had a game snowed out.

Remembering all this stuff is tough.  I'm starting to get withdrawal pains (:^(

I'm not sure if this question belongs here but...

I've been to WDW in April and the temperatures ran to the mid
80's and it wasn't too humid. It was very nice.

My question is about the "comfort index" in June. Just how
hot does it FEEL. Is it about the same as our hot, humid
summer weather up here in Mass. (our "Hot enough for ya" days)?

Is the heat and humidity overbearing in late June?

    It's difficult to relate Orlando climate to your normal climate, 
    but we didn't find any problems with it. We flew in from the UK 
    end of June this year. When we left home, it was typical British 
    Summer weather, temps around 70 max, and if it wasn't raining, it 
    was just about to! 
    
    Arrived Orlando about 20:00 local time, air-conditioned right 
    through the airport, so our first exposure to native weather was 
    when we stepped outside to board the shuttle bus. That was a 
    shock! I genuinely thought that either a steam pipe had burst 
    close-bye, or that the sprinklers were on to water the plants! 
    After a 10yd walk to the bus with our luggage, we were dripping. 
    We were wearing what would be lightweight clothing in England, but 
    was far too heavy for Orlando.
    
    That was the only time we noticed the humidity, we, including kids 
    of 6 and 10 acclimatised overnight. The next day, we rushed around 
    shopping for groceries, and then did the afternoon at Gatorland 
    Zoo, and although we were surrounded by water, and the temperature 
    was 90, it didn't bother us. The only other time we were aware of 
    the climate was when we were at MGM, in-line for the Indiana Jones 
    Stunt Spectacular. We were waiting on an exposed slab of concrete, 
    no shade, not a cloud in the sky and the temperature reached 98. 
    That felt hot!
    
    Sorry to be so verbose, but I'm getting in the mood for our return 
    in 12 days B-) B-) B-) B-)  (Smiley Family wearing Shades!). In 
    summary, don't worry about it, you won't notice it. Even the 
    charge to Space Mountain in the company of thousands(?) of others 
    didn't cause me to break sweat. If you want a tongue-in-cheek look

Thanks for the reply. We're planning on going down via Amtrak
this June. It sounds like we'll be able to adjust OK.
I wish I could adjust to it today (16 degrees F this morning).

    any one care to share some first hand information on what 
    the weather is like in Orlando in November? I remember it
    raining for *THREE* days in a row, that image still sticks
    in my mind as I sit here planning a DisneyWorld trip in 
    November!

    I have been there twice in November, 1987 & 1989.  In 87, we
    encountered only 1/2 day of rain in the 9 days we were there and the 
    weather was in the mid to upper 70's.  This past November, from the 8th
    through the 19th, we encountered 2 hours of rain on the 9th and 1 night
    it rained overnight.  All but 1 of the days it was in the high 70's,
    and even in the low 80's a few days.  The 1 exception was that it
    didn't get over 65 one day.
    
    I recall the weather you are referring to, it rained many, many inches
    over Atlanta during early Nov, we actually flew over the remnants of
    that storm on our way down.
    
    Thats my experiences, everyones may vary.  It is impossible to judge
    what the weather will be like.  But mid to late November has been a
    good time for me, most of the hurricane season is over and it hasn't
    gotten cold yet.  Rain may even cut the crowds down more.

    I went Thanksgiving week in 1988. The temps were in the 70's & 80's
    during the day and 50-60 at night. A tropical storm hit one night
    but by the next evening it was back to normal.

    We have  the oposite experience when we went from Nov 11-20 '82.  Sunny
    every day 70-80's,  cool  at night and only 1 night rained for about an
    hour.  This was  our  best  trip  yet  as  far  as what we were able to
    accomplish in the parks.

    I've lived here for going on four years.  The first couple years the
    summers were *rainy* i.e. everyday between 4-6 PM we'd have a thunder
    shower.  The *winters* are particularly dry.  The past two years we've
    been hurting for rain and many counties are still under mandatory water
    use restrictions.  
    
    So, if it rained a couple days, we'd be glad but I'd hate to see it
    ruin anyones vacation.  Overall I think you can adjust to the weather
    conditions and have and enjoyable time.  
    
    Yesterdays high was 82 today will only be 60 but by sunday we should be
    back in the 80's.
    
    BTW I will be starting my garden this weekend. (We went to Disney last
    weekend)

    The one day I was there it rained. That wouldn't have been so bad,
    but it was 30 degrees at the time. People from the Floridian were
    wearing their robes in the park to try to stay warm enough. There
    were no lines for any of the rides in Epcot that afternoon, so that
    part was great. 
    
    We were supposed to stay another day. (This was a very last minute
    visit.) The Disney weather number predicted sleet and temperatures
    again in the thirties. We went back to the in-laws. 
    
    We're going to try again, either in May or November. I hope our
    luck is better this time. 

    	Well, I've made reservations at fort Summit for the end
    of August. May only concern is the Temperature and Humidity.
    Has anyone gone down to WDW during August? How did you find 
    the temps and humidity? I've read the average highs and lows
    but I would like to hear from someone who has been down there
    at that time of year.

    	We were there in '85 for Labor day weekend, it was muggy, but
    not terribly hot, there was also a hurricane hanging around the
    coast, so there were lots of waves of rain, thats pretty close
    to the end of August :v)!  Hurricane Season!

    The weather in Florida during the summer is no worse than it is in 
    New England during those Dog days of summer, the only thing different 
    is that they never seem to stop.  The one good thing is that in 
    Florida, everyone and everthing is set up to take the heat, just like 
    we (New Englanders) are set up to take the cold.  As a result. it's 
    not bed at all!

    P.S. What ever you do, don't stand out in the sun for very long at
    mid-day, it'll cook you in no time at all.

    I agree with Phil. The only difference is the consistent heat. In New
    England you may have a few days of 90 degree heat then drop down to the
    80's. In Fla. the temps are more consistent. But also you have a shot
    at a T-Storm everyday to cool you out.
    
    Summer is my favorite time for going because everything is open, you
    are not prone to cold temps (as in Winter months), and when you return
    there is no real weather shock (warm to cold).

    We went the last two weeks in August 87 and had a great time.
    As stated earlier the weather is consistent. Our next trip 
    with the kids will again be in August. No lines, good weather
    and we don't have to take them out of school for a week.
    

    August is part of our rainy season.  A half hour of heavy rain between
    4:00 PM and 6:00 PM is fairly common.  You may want to try and
    anticipate, and be ready to duck indoors quickly.  If you watch the
    sky, and avoid open ground if its looking bad, hauling rain gear really
    isn't necessary.  The heat isn't much worse than anywhere else in
    August, wear light colors, and cotton.  Hats help a lot to shade your
    face.

    We've been to WDW twice in late August.  The weather was about the
    same both times - hot and humid.  The temperature was around 97F
    and the humidity was very high - 90% probably isn't exaggerating.
    According to the weather channel at the hotel, there was always
    a very high chance of an afternoon thunder storm.  Although this
    sounds terrible, it wasn't at all!  It wasn't much hotter or more
    humid than it was here in NH.
    
    As far as getting rained on goes...  Maybe someone can learn from
    my mistake.  We were waiting in line for the Jungle Cruise.  It
    began to rain as we boarded the boat.  Since the boat had a canopy,
    we figured we wouldn't get too wet.  WRONG!  The rain was blowing
    in from the sides.  It was sort of like what happened on the
    Disney special that had Tony Danza on it, everyone got soaked.
    Being smart (or so I thought), I put on my sweatshirt which also
    got soaked.  The storm ended by the time we got off the ride.  This
    one moment of brilliance led to an afternoon of shivers!  Wet
    clothing significantly enhances the air conditioning effect.
    
    Here are some ideas for handling the weather:
    
      o Avoid the parks from about 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM.  Go swimming
        instead.  A typical day for us consisted of sleeping until 9:00
        showering, eating brunch, swimming until 2:00 and then going to
    	one of the parks from 3:00 to closing (usually about midnight).
    
      o If it looks like it's going to rain, head for shelter.  The storms
        we experienced lasted about 1/2 hour.  If the skies begin to
    	darken in the late afternoon, I suggest doing one of the following:
    
    	- Do anything that will keep you inside for about an hour.
        - Head for a restaurant if it's close to meal time.
        - If you're in Epcot, head for one of the pavilions that has a
    	  lot of attractions in it.  Everyone does this but think positive.
    	  The long line you're in could be outside in the rain!
    	- If you're at the Magic Kingdom, head for the something inside.
          This is the perfect time to wait in line for Space Mountain!
    	  Almost everyone heads for the stores so it's probably not a
    	  good time to shop.  If you're near a train station, hop on.
    	  Sit in the center of the bench so you don't get wet and ride
    	  around the park until the rain stops.  If it looks like it's
    	  going to rain for a long time, you have the advantage of riding
    	  to the Main St. station and leaving the park.  Plus you'll be
    	  rested enough to RUN to the monorail.
    	- I don't know what to suggest for MGM since most of the lines
    	  there are outside.  I guess you'd have to head for the shops
    	  or leave the park to avoid getting drenched.
    
    Note 131.* - best times to go - may have more information.

    I realize that 1990 was an exceptional year but is it usually 
    warm enough to use pools/do water activites at Disney in
    early Feb.?

    in late Jan 1990 both water attractions at WDW were closed for repairs.
    I don't recall when they reopened.

    Can anyone in the States tell me what the temperature roughly is at the
    moment in Florida/Orlando as I have got four days to go and would like
    to have an idea.

    We just came back from 10 days in Florida. (3/22-4/1). We had assumed
    we get some cool days so brought light jackets, long-sleeved shirts
    etc.. NEVER USED ANY OF THEM! 
    Temperatures ranged from upper 70's to 91. Some days were pretty
    humid too.
    
    So, I'd bring a few cool weather items, but very few. Say, 80-90%
    summer clothes would be my guess. But there are many others with
    far more experience than I!
