Conference koolit::disney

    The names of the stores is "Disneyana" and they typically sell most
    of the fare you can obtain at Disney theme park stores (i.e. anything
    on Main Street USA) as well as specialty items, video movies from
    the Disney Studios, and the like.
    
    The original Disneyana store (unless my facts are in error) is the
    one located in the South Coast Plaza shopping mall in Costa Mesa,
    California.  If you didn't get enough of this stuff at Disneyland
    (just up the street) then be sure to drop by!  It is easy to find
    since the mall is at the corner of I-405 and (?) Bowles Ave.

    Wow, I didn't realize South Coast Plaza was *the* original
    Disneyana store.  I feel honored!
    
    I'm not from the Costa Mesa office, I'm from the Irvine office so
    So. Coast Plaza is in my front yard.  Here's the directions...
    
    Take I-405 (from LA) south to Bristol Ave.  Go north (left) on Bristol.
    You're practically in the parking lot when you get off the freeway.

    There is a Disney Store located on Pier 39. Whenever I visit
    San Francisco, I visit this store.  I'm especially interested
    in animation cels and this store carries quite a few.

    in Nashua has more then just mickey and minnie.  I know that they
    have Babmi, Donald, and others.

    for two years (Live Free or Die) and I would not call it tax free.

    Well, I  went to the Disney Store at the Pheasent Lane Mall, and talked
    to one of the Cast Members,  seems  this  is  the  17th  store, and the
    stores are doing so well, that Disney is currently ramping up to open a
    total of 35 new store this year, which will bring  the  total to around
    50 stores by Xmas.
    
    Currently all the stores are  either  on  the West or East Coast, where
    the most of the population resides, and he wasn't  sure  if  any of the
    new 35, will be in the mid-west etc.

    What exactly does this store sell??  Is it just disney clothes,
    or can you get the usual assortment of Disney Souvineer books, mugs,
    Mickey Mouse watches and whatnot?
    
    The reason I ask is because my family used to have a real nice hard
    cover book (with lots of color pictures!!!) that covered everything
    from the swamp the park was built on, pictures of the construction,
    right up through comming attractions. Unfortunatly, my Father (being
    the extremely helpful guy that he is) lent the book to someone who
    was planning a trip to Disney World.  When I went to find it some
    time later, he couldn't remember who he lent it to.  Therefore I
    would really like to get my hands on another book of this type.

    The stores sell various Disney item like clothes, mugs, watches,
    and most any Disney item you may want.  I was in the one at the
    PLM in Nashua this past weekend and did notice a number of 'nice'
    hardcover books on Disney, although I don't rember on that would
    sounds like the one you lost.

    I have a copy of that hard-cover book and it is very nice.  I lend
    it out to folks who are planning a trip.  So far I've got it back
    each time.
    
    A co-worker just returned from WDW and he purchased a paperback
    that was almost the same, but it was only $3.95 vs. $14.95 for
    the hard-cover book.
    
    So keep your eyes open for the paperback, also.
    
    BTW - Somewhere in this notesfile is an address for WDW mail order.
          I think you could order a book from the catalog.

    I checked out "The Disney Store" in the Burlington Mall this weekend.
    That was a big mistake.  Now I want to leave tomorrow!  I don't
    think I can wait another 2 months.
    
    They had one real big book on DisneyLand, but nothing on Walt Disney
    World.

    They have a New Disney Store in Burlington Ma. and 
    Pheasant Lane Mall in Nashua NH.. They are wonderful.
    I feel 8 again when I walk in those stores. When you grew up
    with all these cute Creatures it's is a Great!
    
    I just found out about this Notes file and it's funny I
    was in the Disney Store in Nashua last night and bought
    at Little Mickey and Minnie Mouse for my Desk. They are
    looking at me as I write this..!

    Currently there  is only about 18 store open, Disney was/is planning to
    open a total  of  35 stores this year.  I've got a listing at home, and

     I talked with the people at the Nashua store, they said passports
    can be upgraded to include MGM only at the Guest Relations window
    of the TTC. 
    They were not sure about future plans but thats the deal for now.

    I would like to amend my original reply .1 to say that the official
    name of these Disney stores is "The Disney Store".  The first time
    I ever saw a Disney store it was called "Disneyana", but from all
    of the MKC/Disney brochures I can find it looks like they have changed
    the name.

     Announcing a new Disney Store, now presently under construction!!!!
    
    
    
        It will be in the new Emerald Square mall in North Attleboro,
    MA.  This is a brand new mall at the junction of I-295 and US 1
    (Route 1 to all us New Englanders), and about 3 miles from the northern
    junction of I-295 with I-95.  This mall is just north of Providence,
    RI, and (most importantly, to me), less that 45 mins from Worcester,
    MA down 146.
    
        An interesting note about this mall.  It's called the Emerald
        Square mall and slightly themes, 'The Wizard of OZ'.  Each store in
    there tries to place in its windows something to do with the movie.
    Now, who made the movie and who does Disney have an agreement with
    about the Studio?  It might be interesting to see what is done with
    this store...

    The answer of course is MGM!

    By the name of the new theme park at WDW most people think it is a
    joint venture between Disney and MGM.  In fact MGM has only sold Disney
    the rights to it's characters, films, library etc.  They have no
    interest in the Disney/MGM Studio Theme Park itself, nor in the studio. 
    It is all Disney.

    MGM characters, themes, scenes, etc. are all very evident in the
    theme park.  The great movie ride has a whole tableaux dedicated to The
    Wizard of OZ.  Including Margaret Hamilton as the Wicked Witch of the
    West.  She is one of the most fastest and smoothest moving
    audio-animatronic figures yet built.  There is also the Indiana Jones
    Stunt show.

    It is not clear whether the agreement with MGM extends to the stores.  I
    have yet to see anything but Disney stuff in them.

    I heard a rumor over the weekend that Disney is planning a 6000+ square
    foot store at Quincy Market in Boston.  Has anyone seen anything in
    writing about it?

    6000� ft. is a good size retail outlet, and by Quincy Market standards
    it is immense. Most of the shops there are under 1000� ft. and some are
    just pushcarts.

    There are cardboard Disney Store signs in the windows of a store in the 
    North Market at Quincy Market in Boston.  I don't know how big 6000
    square feet is, but it appeared to be a fairly large area.
    

    There currently is a "Mickey & Co." store in Quincy Market.  They sell
    the upscale J.G. Hook designer Disney (and other character) stuff. 
    There is also a "Mickey & Co." store at WDW at the Disney Village
    Marketplace.

    The rumor I heard was that it was going to be a Disney owned Disney
    Store, like those in Burlington, Nashua, and elsewhere, only bigger.

    I received a new Disney Catalog in the mail the other day.  The list of
    stores has grown considerably.  If I get a chance I'll post the entire
    new list.

    It did include a Quincy Market store, to open in "Fall '89".  Does
    anyone have any additional information?  I'll bet it will be open in
    time for the Christmas rush.

    I also saw an ad in the paper for the Atrium, a new upscale mall on Rt.
    9 in Newton.  The list of stores included a Disney Store scheduled to
    open in February 1990.  That will bring the total to six local stores. 
    It seems the Boston area market is a good one for Disney!

    According to my friend that works at Burlington the store planned for
    Quincy Market is going to be one of the largest in the country. It is 
    supposed to be approx 10,000 sq.ft. and should be open for Christmas.
    
    By the way managing a Disney store may be exciting but after talking to
    the manager of Burlington it has MORE than it share of headaches. I
    managed a retail store myself and I'm sure I wouldn't want to try it. 

    The Disney store in Boston at Faneuil Hall Marketplace/Quincy Market
 soft-opened last Wed. (11/19/89) and officially opened that Friday.  It
 is beautiful!  Two floors and all of the Disney 'attractions' (Mickey Mouse,
 'Goofinstein', ect.) are all at floor level so you can prop your kids next to
 them and take pictures.  Most of the stores I've been to have only one or two
 of these but, I think, this one had at least 8.  It was perfect.  I happened
 to be showing Boston to two friends of mine who I had met at Walt Disney World
 while the three of us were working on the College Program down there.  One of 
 them had never been to a Disney store (she lives in Minn./St. Paul).

    Also, the Cast Member working there mentioned that she believed that their
 store in the Emerald Square Mall in North Attleboro, MA/Providence, RI has 
 just opened, but she wasn't sure.  Anyone brave that shopping 'maul' this week-
 end and know for sure?

    Like the sorcerer's bewitched well in he movie "Fantasia," Walt
    Disney culture continues to gush across America.  Last week it washed
    into Faneuil Hall Marketplace, as the Walt Disney Co. opened its 41st
    Disney Store - the flagship of the chain.

    At 6,700 square feet on two levels, the new Disney Store is more than
    twice the size of its siblings, including those in the Burlington Mall
    and the South Shore Plaza.  Like them, it is meant to be more than a
    retail store.

    The Disney Store is a densely packed annex of all-around Disney
    culture.  While selling a vast array of merchandise, it aggressively
    promotes the company's other operations: theme parks and filmed
    entertainment.

    At midday last Thursday, the store's first full week, it appeared to
    be undiscovered.  But the staff was prepared.  Workers in blue-and-pink
    cardigan sweaters stood inside the door, greeting customers with the
    kind of Jiminy Cricket cheer that one encounters at Disney World.

    A few people wandered about, including four men in serious suits and
    trench coats who poked at the merchandise, bemused smiles on their
    faces.  One said to another, "This is Disney World, right?"

    The store has about 4,000 items, including T-shirts, sweat-shirts,
    figurines, Donald Duck hats and Mickey Mouse ears, books, videos,
    watches, pajamas, toys and stuffed animals.  Prices range from $1.50
    for a Mickey Mouse eraser to $3,000 for a capodimonte porcelain scene
    from the movie "Sleeping Beauty."

    The store is supposed to be a Disney movie set, with lavish animated
    (i.e. moving mechanical) scenes in every corner.  At one side, Mickey
    Mouse as "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" casts a spell, with the sorcerer's
    castle rising to the ceiling of the second level.  Beside the spiral
    stairway, moving broomsticks seem to file along, carrying sloshing
    buckets.

    Expressing the store's theme of performance, employees are called "cast
    members," customers are called "guests" and the selling floor is called
    "center stage."

    The cast members are so friendly that one almost wonders if they, too,
    are animated figures.  (One male employee was quietly singing
    "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah" along with a video.)  Apparently, they're real. 
    The ability to interact warmly with customers is a prerequisite: 
    Applicants are interviewed in groups to assess their social traits.

    Naturally, they have to look the part.  Men must be clean-shaven have
    short haircuts, use deodorant but no heavy cologne and wear no more
    than one ring per hand.  Verboten for women: bracelets, textured
    stockings or - heaven forbid - blood red nail polish.

    With "cast members" everywhere, the merchandise, wiggling mechanical
    scenes, constant display of movie scenes on various monitors and
    piped-in blaring of movie songs, the store immerses guests totally in
    Disney culture.

    That of course, is the idea.

    "Cross-marketing is what the whole company is built on," said Stephen
    Burke, 31, Disney's unbelievably clean-cut-looking vice president of
    retailing.  "Our goal is for people to feel better about Walt Disney
    after they leave.  We want them to be more likely to go to Walt Disney
    World, see a Disney movie or subscribe to the Disney Channel."

    The store has a display of tapes and merchandise based on the new
    Disney movie, "The Little Mermaid."  Disney World passes and "Disney
    Dollars," usable at the theme parks are for sale.  There's even a
    special free telephone on which "guests" can get information about the
    parks and subscribe to the Disney Channel or order from the Disney
    catalog.

    The consumer products division is far smaller than the other Disney
    divisions - about 7 percent of the corporations $3.4 billion in total
    sales.  The stores are proliferating like the sorcerer's broomstick,
    however.  The first store opened in 1987.  Plans call for expansion to
    100 stores by 1992.

    "It's looked upon as a great growth opportunity," said Lise Buyer, an
    analyst who covers Disney for Prudential Bache in New York.  "They have
    a knack for finding business that will have a positive impact on all
    their divisions."

    Faneuil Hall Marketplace has hopes for Disney.  The store is on the
    north market side, near Durgin Park, historically the less well-
    patronized thoroughfare.  For its part, Disney is certain the flagship
    will be a smash.

    "Faneuil Hall is going to be the top store by leaps and bounds," said
    Burke.  "For our all-family entertainment concept, Faneuil Hall is the
    number one mall in the United States.  We expect 300 people in here at
    a time.  You won't have five feet of space around you."

    It may be a smash but for the Christmas period I happen to know that
    its "little sister" in Burlington outperformed Fanuiel by more than 2
    to 1 in terms of gross and 3 times in terms of gross to sqaure foot.

    	The store in Nashua at the Pheasant Lane Mall has run out of MKC
      4 day passports at the $97 club price. I'm not sure about the 5 day.
      It seems they carry two kinds, the non-MKC($102) and the MKC. Disney
      will not issue new MKC passports until after the price increase on
      Sunday Feb 11th. I know it's late but anyone thinking of buying them
      before Sunday should call first.

      I was reading the last Disney quarterly report last night, it
    said Disney has opened it's first restaurant outside of the theme
    parks. It is called Mikey's Kitchen and it is an annex off one of

    I forgot my tel book was a 1990 and I found it. I was told that I can
    only update my passes down in Orlando.
    
    A 4-day super pass for an adult was around $105...for 5-day pass $135.

    Upgrades can ONLY be done at the Guest Relations areas.  Although there
    are now Guest Relations windows in each of the 3 parks, you would still
    be best served to do your upgrades at the TTC; there are more windows,
    therefore MUCH shorter lines and these transactions tend to be LONG!!!
    
    Also, as of last week (we came home on Sunday, 7/1) the 4 day pass at
    $104 for an adult was NOT a super pass.  Only the 5 day (@$135) was a
    super pass.  The whole thing got VERY confusing with upgrades.  I ended
    up standing in line at guest relations 3 different times and still had
    days left over on passes, one super pass that we never used the SUPER
    portion of and one problem with a child ticket . . . sigh - you can't
    get away from the paperwork!!!

    I just got the number for the Disney store in London, 071-2876558,
    located at 140 Regent Street W1. Only merchandising stuff for sale
    at the moment, no passes, but with a bit of pressure from the public
    who knows what they might sell.... An Americam lady answered, very
    polite and helpful.

    I called in at the Disney Store on Regent Street while I was in 
    London yesterday. It had me smiling again for the half hour I was 
    in there, almost like being in Orlando again. It's on two floors, 
    stuffed with all the familiar merchandise, except that the video's 
    are VHS. I got some stuff for the kid's Xmas stockings, just to 
    keep them going till summer. Prices seem to be pound for dollar, 
    i.e. some little earrings which I remember at $3.50 in the Disney 
    Village were �3.50 here (They don't accept MKC cards for discount 
    either!). There are huge displays of soft toys and most seem 
    identical, but all the Little Mermaid characters were different; 
    uglier somehow with mean little eyes. Some Sebastian slippers were 
    positively frightening!
    
    All the Cast Members wore college type cardigans with "Cast 
    Member" knitted into them, and seemed to have absorbed the Disney 
    ethics. Not quite as good as Orlando, but 1000 times better than 
    the "Sharon and Traceys" normally found in London stores.
    
    They stock Birnbaum, but were waiting for a delivery of the '91 
    edition, and as yet don't have a mail order catalog and service, 
    but that is coming "next year".

    I just ordered my '91 copy of Birnbaum through WH Smith, it is not
    due out until later this month, but expect 5 week delivery. The
    travel place in Christchurch that Andy Whitaker mentioned previously,
    has stopped selling the guide, some other company has taken over.

    Company has decided to stop selling a toy figure of a tramp.
    
    The five inch "Steve the Tramp" from Dick Tracy was described by a
    Disney spokesman as misunderstood.

    A Disney Store

    It was announced in this morning's paper.  

    I visited the London Disney Store last Saturday.  Suffering badly from
    a severe bout of Disneyitis I was really looking forward to going. 
    But, I'm afraid to say I was disappointed!  It just doesn't compare to
    the real thing.  The main emphaisis seemed to be on toys etc and there

    Looks  like New Hampshire is finally getting their second Disney Store.
    Saw  and ad in the local paper, looking for applications for the  store
    to  be  located at the Mall at Rockingham Park (or whatever its called)
    in Salem off of exit 1 on I93.  There was no mention of  opening  date,
    but the  Mall  is schedule to open later this summer I believe, haven't
    been in Salem for a while thanks to DEC-Flex.
    
    I  just  wished  they'd put one more  centrally  located  in  NH,  like
    Manchester, Concord or Laconia.  The Nashua and now the Salem store are
    right on the Mass/NH border.

    The UK is also getting another Disney Store.  I'm not sure when it will
    be open, but it will be at the Meadow Hall shopping complex in
    Sheffield.

    Several reliable sources have told me that a Disney store will be
    opening in the Columbia Mall in Columbia, Maryland sometime during
    September or October.
    
    Yipee- its only 5 minutes from home.  Looks like my high school
    daughter has found a good place to work during her senior year!
    

    It was announced in the Glasgow Evening Times that a Disney store is
    being opened in the St Enoch shopping centre, Argyll Street, Glasgow.
    
    Th same article indicated that this was the first of many to be opened
    in Europe. I suppose this will be a result of the Euro Disney park
    opening and the increased marketing of Disney in Europe.

    The sign at the  store  says  coming soon, the brouchure says September
    '91, my guess is that it'll  be  real late Sept or October is more like
    it.  The storefront is not even  built  yet,  no  shelves  etc.  that I
    could see from the second floor (and they advertised  for  help back in
    early July?).  The store is located on the Filene's  end of the mall on
    the first floor, eight store on the left.
    
    As  for  the  mall itself, it real nice, various shades of  grey  tile,
    black highlights, wall are off white, the railings are brass with glass
    panels and the roof is one long glass canopy in the middle, the  lenght
    of the mall, real light and airy feeling.

    I didn't know there was going to be one in Salem! Terrific!! That means
    there are three within .5 hour of my home -- Nashua, Burlington, and
    Salem! 
    
    Right now, I like the Nashua store better -- it's a little bigger and
    seems to have more stuff! Plus, no sales tax on items other than
    clothes. Hope the one in Salem measures up.

I think the point is that there's no sales tax on (almost all) clothing in
MA, therefore there's no reason for MA residents to travel to NH to evade sales 
tax if they're just buying clothing.  So the benefit of the NH store is that
there's no sales tax on the non-clothing items.

    Well I  decided  to  check out the progress today since I had to run an
    errand and wouldn't you know it 
    
    IT'S OPEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    
    It turned out  they  had  thier  soft opening last Wednesday, and Grand
    Opening Saturday.  It's seems  to  be about the same size as the one in
    Nashua  (the  store  is  narrower  but  longer).    I did  notice  some
    differences in the selection of clothing from the one in Maine (haven't
    been to the Nashua Store this year).  There's a Mickey Sweatshirt I saw
    in Maine, but decided to hold off, and they don't have it in  Salem  (I
    knew I should of picked it up as I saw it)
    
    Anyway I got my fix today, noticed some involuntary scratching, need to
    take out the tape,.......
    
    
    
    

    Re: .66, I've checked out the Disney Store at Meadow Hall,
    Sheffield, England and it's really rather nice.  I'd say better
    than the one in London, although it's probably smaller.
    
    I couldn't leave without buying myself a pair of Mickey earrings.  It
    helped ease the Disney-itis I was suffering at the time :-)

    As of this week, Disneyholics in Columbia, MD now have access to a 
    Disney store in the Columbia Mall. (Gee, now why do I think I know

    I have always paid the Florida sales tax when I bought my tickets in 
    New Hampshire. The reasons given to me were the same as stated in .82.

    You didn't mis-read anything.  Someone recently posted that they saved
    the tax.  In fact several people over the years have posted that. 
    However, I think they are mistaken.  You pay the same price regardless
    if you buy them in the Disney stores or at WDW.  There are no tax
    savings.  In either case, you pay the price printed on the ticket (which
    already  includes the tax).

Actually, FL is another NH, by socking it to the tourists.  Tolls, hotel 
taxes, meals tax, etc.  Without getting into the feelings on this issue,
suffice it to say that both states have tax policies designed to extract a
lot of dollars from out of state residents, and neither has a typical
personal income tax.  If you think about the relative sizes and the
neighboring states, it even makes sense for NH to not have a sales tax
(to attract a lot of out of state buyers) and FL to have one (because of all
the tourists, even though this means local residents have to pay, as well).

    Why buy them at the store? Well if you purchased passes at the store in
    January you may avoid a price hike in May. 
    
    The advantage is to ward off buying them at higher prices later on.
    
    I purchased my AP's last Fall because I didn't want to risk buying them
    at a higher price.

According to this morning's Chicago Tribune,  Disney has decided to
close the two Mickey's Kitchen restaurants tomorrow.  (Mickey's Kitchen
is a fast food restaurant that is attached to the Disney Store.  There
is one in Schaumburg, IL and another in CA.)
 
The article stated that the restaurants were barely breaking even and
that Disney has decided to work on expanding the Disney Store chain
into Europe instead of continuing with the fast food market.
 
The article also said that the original purpose of the Mickey's Kitchen
restaurants was to draw more people into the stores.  Restaurant or
not, every Disney store that I have ever been to has been packed!  I
think they discovered that they don't need gimmicks to attract customers.
 
And, now we'll have to look elsewhere for those Mickey, Donald, and Goofy
shaped character fries.

    While at the Pheasant Lane Mall yesterday I unexpectantly ran into
    Mickey and Mickey who were having their photos taken with some
    children. 
    
    It was sort of a "Disney" trip 'cause I went shopping for some "stuff"
    to wear down there this Summer....losing weight is expensive 'cause ya
    gotta buy new stuff.
    
    Okay this is in the "Stores" note so I better get on with it.
    
    While in the Disney store yesterday I noticed that on the big theater
    screen in the rear of the store were famous songs from Disney
    animation including "Mermaid" and "Beauty". They were showing "Be Our
    Guest" while I was there.
    
    I immediately asked a castmember if this was a promotion for a video
    and she said, "No I'm sorry sir...it's from a laserdisc produced just
    for the stores."
    
    She did confirm that "Beauty" will hit the stands right around
    Halloween.

    The Disney Stores will start taking orders for Beauty and the Beast
    some time in July.  The videos will cost $19.99 and there will be
    some kind of promotional gift (like the 101 Dalmation watch) to
    encourage people to order from the Disney Store.

I was at the Disney Store in Danbury, Ct, the other night and picked up an 
application for a new Disney Store Credit Card!  No fee, obviously, and it 
allegedly gives you advance notice about special sales/promotions and 
possibly special merchandise offerings for cardholders.  You also get a DS 
newsletter 6 times a year and a subscription to the Disney catalog.  It 
doesn't say anything about real discounts, of course :-( And of course, it 
looks pretty nice, certainly an important addition to your walletful of 
cards!  
 
There's an 800 number but I don't have it with me at the moment.

In response to the Disney card.  It is WONDERFUL!!!
When all my other cards are maxed out, I can always find fun
at Disney.  When I got mine, they sent me a $20 gift certificate
(it may have been a promotion, I'm not sure) which I promptly used to 
order B&B.  Plus, its definitely a conversation piece for the wallet, 
people don't believe it actually exists!!  So folks - It Does!!!

Back to the business at hand, where did you receive the application for the 
card?  Was it in the mail, and if so did they tell you they would send you 
a gift certificate with the card?  As I had said, I picked up the 
application at the Disney Store, no promise of a gift certificate :-(
I do agree that it will be a real conversation piece!!  BTW, how long did 
it take to get the card once you sent in the application?

When the credit card was first announced, there were two programs.  There
was one program where you did not pay anything to join and you only
received the credit card.  There was also a Passport program.  With this
program you paid $15 a year (I think) and received a Disney Store gift  
certificate worth $20.  In addition, those in the Passport program
were to get advance notice of sales, promos, etc.
 
My wife, who is a cast member at the Disney Store at Montgomery Mall in
Maryland brought home one of the original applications for us to fill
out.  After we did, but before the application was sent in, we were told 
to fill out one of the new applications.
 
I called up the 800 number and asked about the difference between the two
applications.  I was told that now EVERYONE gets the Passport program and
that they did away with the charge.  It was probably a pain to administer.

pre approved credit offer in the mail ( great statement on my
poor credit rating, huh?)

I also received the $20 certificate without joining the passport program.  
Then I noticed the fine print, I think it was on the acceptance letter that 
said something like, once you use this gift certificate you will be billed 
for the $15 membership fee.
 
I also just called the 800 number for the Disney Store and they told me to 
send the gift certificate back and then I won't be charged the $15 fee. 
However I would still receive all the notices that a passport membership 
person would receive.

Well my $0.04 (inflation, you know) is that I agree with you.  'course, I 
don't ever plan on using the thing, I just signed up for the passport 
program and other little fringe benefits.  And the card looks neat.  Too 
bad it doesn't have a hologram.

My card took 2 weeks to arrive.  Debra, I'd also really like to know how 
you got that certificate, they never told me about that.  (major loss...)

    I just got mine.  Took less than two weeks between completing the form
    and receiving the card...this includes the mailing time.  I'm still a
    little confused on the "Passport Program".  I don't remember checking
    off any boxes on the application saying I wanted the passport program
    (I don't remember it being mentioned).  Reading the other info that
    came with the card it still looks like there could be 2 programs and
    you would have to pay $$ for the passport program...to get the
    additional benefits of mail notices, mail order info, etc.  I'll have
    to call the 800 number sometime and figure this out.

    For those  of  you  who  need a cheap Disney fix, hit your local Disney
    store now.   I  just  came  back  from  a lunch trip to the MRP here in
    Salem, and they are  having  a  cleareance sale on selected items.  $60
    watches are now on sale  at  $19.99, some t-shirts etc.  at half price.

    They also are starting to stock  Aladin  merchandise,  they had several
    colors  of  Aladin  t-shirts,  spill-proof drink cups  etc.(no  ceramic
    coffee cup yet), pins.  They even had  on  display  a  limited  edition
    Genie on display for $145 (I think).

    Can someone please tell me where the nearest Disney stores are to
    Marlboro/Maynard area.  I will be down for 3 weeks at PKO and I am
    looking to do some XMAS shopping while I am here.

    The Burlington Mall store (in Burlington MA) is about 45 minutes to an
    hour away (depending on the route and time of day), but it was the first 
    in New England and is the smallest that I've seen.
    
    A little longer drive to Pheasant Lane Mall in Nashua, NH or Rockingham
    Mall in Salem NH would be bigger stores and no sales tax. 
    
    The above three stores have easy access from major highways.
    
    Of course, if you're going into Boston itself there is the store at 
    Faneuil Hall Marketplace in the heart of the city. IMHO it's not as
    good as the two NH stores, and getting there can be an experience, 
    but if you're going to be there anyway....

Or you could take 495 south to the Mass Pike East and exit at the Copley
Place Mall. There's a new Disney Store which recently opened.
Parking is free after 5:00pm with a purchase of 5$ or more - just have
your ticket validated.

    The disney store at Faneuil Hall(I'm a local and I can't even spell
    it), is the biggest one in the chain.  There are also stores in
    Braintree at South Shore Plaza, 128 south to braintree takes about an
    hour, and Emerald Square in North Attleboro.  128s to 95 south to
    195(only one exit) to route 1 south. About 90 minutes but its a big
    mall.

    Anyone know if there are still sales or new sales at the Disney store
    at Pheasant Lane??

    I was there a week ago Monday and they had some kids clothing on sale
    (mostly Beauty and Beast stuff) at 50% off.  Picked up a Mickey Long
    Sleeved shirt for $10.  Also, there were just a few men/women T-shirts
    that were marked down, I don't remember what the % off was.
    
    

    Any deluxe editions of "Fantasia"??  I was at the Faneuil Hall store
    (is that how you spell it, Dave??) last week and they had about a dozen
    copies of the deluxe boxed edition of "Fantasia" for half-price
    ($49.99).  I was very, very tempted, but I already have the tape.

    EMERAL SQUARE MALL in Attleboro has the Fantasia deluxe edition at 50%
    off, along with t-shirts, shorts, jewelry and such at 40% off. Was

    Sorry but  the Disney Stores are Disney owned, they are not franchised.
    The best you  could  do is mail to Disney your location and if they are
    planing to open a store in your area, apply for the store managers job.

    Good luck on getting a position as a manager.  Disney fills those
    positions from within.  Best you could hope for is to be a floor grunt
    for at least 6 months full time, win the promotion to lead once a slot
    opens, and so on.  You're looking at a minimum of 2 years before you
    make manager at the absolute earliest.

    	Just in time for Christmas, the first Disney Store in France
    has opened in the Velizy 2 shopping centre about 10 miles south of
    Paris. I went for a look round at lunchtime and they have some very
    nice stuff, particularly Beauty and the Beast themed articles since
    the film only recently opened here.
    

    The latest edition of "Onstage" the Disney Store Periodical had this
    for news:
    
      - DL's ToonTown will open on January 26, 1993. This new land claims
        to have over 3,000 one-of-a-kind Toon gags.
    
        YOu'll see both Mickey's and Minnie's house...and of course you'll
        find Goofy's abode...his "Bounce HOuse".
    
        There's a Rollercoaster ride called Gadget's Go Coaster...you ride
        in giant acorns.
    
        Toontown also has Donald Duck's housebout the Miss Daisy.
    
      - On Jan. 25, 1993 a limited edition $1 Disney Dollar commemorating
        the Grand Opening of ToonTown will come to the Disney Stores.
    
      - Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey will be on The Disney
        Channel on Jan. 15.
      
      - Pinocchio is to be released on Home Video March 23, 1993.
    
      - The Disney Channel will have a free preview Feb. 11-16 only in 
        participating cable systems.
    
      - Under Collectibles the Disney Store is featuring medallions in 
        specially numbered sets. These medallions celebrate early Disney
        animated classics.
    
      - The Disney Store is starting up a Watch Collector's Club. They will
        offer a special limited edition character timepiece (only 5,000)

    Some more info on the watch collection, from a rep at the Disney Store. 
    The price per watch is $60 and there are six total.  They feature
    Lumiere, Ariel, the Genie, Bambi, Dopey and (argh) someone else...
    
    The Lumiere watch was made available on 12/1 and I believe Ariel was
    next, on 1/1.  I'm interested in the Genie watch which will be coming
    out on 2/1.  According the Disney Store rep, you have to pre-order the
    watch and you'll get it on its availability date.
    
    And if you buy all six, you get another watch with with Mickey as the
    Sorcerer's Apprentice for free.  This watch is not available for sale
    otherwise, or so I am told.
    
    And yes, Mike, I got a Christmas card too...

    particularly like the Lumiere watch but they sold out of them in the
    L.A. stores (so I picked it up at one of the Vegas ones>.

I have a question for all of you Disney enthusiasts.

About 3 months ago the Disney stores had GOOFY baseball hats.  The hat was a 
white cotton with a jean-type cotton visor and Goofy was embroidered on the 
front of the hat.  

I should have bought the hat on the spot, but was looking for other things and
did not.  The hats evidently sold out in a matter of days. Around that time
(FEB) they were also in the Disney "winter" catalog.

The stores have been saying that they are supposed to get some more in.
A friend just returned from DISNEY, FL and looked in EVERY store - no GOOFY
hats of that sort.

Has anyone out there seen these hats in their local Disney Stores?  I am willing 
to pay someone to have a couple shipped to me, or to contact the Disney Store
itself and have them ship them.

Any help appreciated.

    I know how you feel. Last August my son saw a Mickey hat that had the
    University of Miami colors. I should have grabbed it then and there but
    I thought "Xmas present or birthday present."
    
    I haven't seen it since.
    
    It's been said time and time that when you see something you like,
    whether it's in a Disney Store outside The World or at The World then
    don't wait...grab it. 
    
    unfortunately I don't always heed my own advice.

    The Disney Store in the Burlington Mall is going to have some heavy 
    competition soon. Directly across the mall from it there is going to 
    be a Warner Brothers Store! The sign is installed above what will be
    the door, but there is no indication when it will open. 
    
    The Burlington Mall Disney store was the first in the area, and cast 
    members say that it is the smallest for that reason. The larger store
    to the left of it is vacant -- it would be nice if they could move and
    expand. 
    
    I know, we Disney-holics will be loyal to Mickey, but Road Runner, Bugs
    Bunny, Porky Pig -- they were good, too.

I don't think the Warner Bros. store will be all that much competition for
the Disney Store.  Disney fans will patronize the Disney Store, Warner Bros. 
fans will patronize the Warner Bros. store.  Fans of both will patronize both,
and I doubt either will suffer...

Personally, I'm thrilled that a Warner Brothers Studio Store will be opening
so close to home.  I have ordered merchandise from their mail-order catalog,
but it's nice to be able to get "instant gratification" by buying stuff at
a store (and a visit last year to the HUGE Warner Bros. store at Caesar's 
Palace in Las Vegas really whetted my appetite!).

But of course I will continue to visit the Disney Store as well! :-)

    I saw one of the Warner Brother Stores in a mall in Pheonix a few weeks
    back.  It's not really the same type of store as the Disney store.  It
    seemed to be more for clothes (t-shirts etc with characters) than the
    more extensive merchandising of the Disney Store.  There will be
    some competition but what's wrong with that.  Competition makes us
    better, so I think it'll cause the Disney Store to respond accordingly.

    "The Lion King" merchandis blitz is about to begin. The Disney Store is
    now selling "Lion King" clothing. $20 for a t-shirt...no thanks.
    
    Also, while in the store I watched the sequence that accompanies "The
    Circle of Light" song that celebrates the birth of the lion cub and
    marveled at the animation.
    
    The animators have really captured the innocence of a newborn.

        Recently I had a very positive experience with one of the cast
        members at the Disney Store at the Square One Mall on Route 1 in 
        Saugus (MA).  Talk about doing "Whatever it takes"!
    
        My daughter Beth (who has Down syndrome) and I visit the Square 
        One Mall three or four times a week, and Beth always insists that 
        we visit the Disney Store.  Several of the cast members 
        recognize Beth and will talk with her.  On a recent visit to 
        the store, Beth and I were talking with one of them about Toy 
        Story.  As Beth's attention drifted to the video, I continued 
        the conversation with Jennifer and remarked about how fast the 
        Toy Story merchandise sold.  Jennifer said that yes, it went 
        quite fast and in fact, they had a waiting list for the Buzz 
        Lightyear Toy.  I mentioned that I was on the lookout for the 
        Pull String Woody.  Jennifer told me that if I would leave my 
        name and phone number she could keep an eye out for them and 
        call me when she had found one.  I gave her my number and 
        thanked her for her willingness to help.
        
        A week or so went by and then I received a call from Jennifer 
        telling me that she had the Woody doll for me and that I could 
        come by the store and pick it up.  This in itself is enough for 
        Jennifer to be commended for, but one additional fact makes 
        this an outstanding example of doing whatever it takes to 
        ensure customer satisfaction - during the conversation with 
        Jennifer she mentioned that she had found the Woody doll at the 
        Magic Kingdom, while on vacation at Walt Disney World.  So, 
        remembering a commitment she had made to a guest at the store 
        back home, she purchased the doll, with her own money and 
        carried it home with her.  
                                                   
        I went to the store over the weekend to pick up the doll and pay 
        Jennifer.  She had the receipt, which she gave me and I paid her
        the total listed at the bottom of the receipt.  Only when I got
        home took a closer look at the receipt did I notice that she had
        purchased it with her cast member's discount of 20% off!  Needless
        to say, a letter to the store manager will be in the mail by the
        end of the day.

    
    The Disney Store in Nashua currently has a bargin table with some good
    stuff on it.  Hunchback stuff, books, trinkets.
    wife reports some good deals.
    

    Late Saturday my wife and were coming home from visiting somw friends
    down in Mass. We had to stop off at Pheasant Lane Mall to pick up some
    things. It was late, around 9 P.M. and as we strolled through the Mall
    we came across the Disney Store and looked around.
    
    I always check out the video being played on the rear screen. While
    back there I was talking with one of the castmembers and remarked as to
    how it must have been a busy day...the stuff animal area in front of
    the screen was really picked through.
    
    She told me that when they close the store they take all the stuffed
    figures and put them on the floor in piles and then gradually put them
    back in their spots in front of the screen. I didn't asked her how long 
    this takes but she sort of hinted that just before closing 
    every other part of the store is piked up and all the castmembers
    work on the stuffed animals and get the area all straightened 
    out before they leave the store.
    
    I wonder if any videos are playing while they do this eleventh hour
    task.
