      Without a doubt, match play. Adds strategy, pressure and a little
    bit of gamesmenship. A blowup hole can be shrugged off more easily.

| | Both. Match play is used for the round. Stroke play is for bragging
    rights afterwards.

| | Excuse the ignorant question, but what is the difference between stroke
    and match play?

| 1883.4 | Even I can answer this one. | ANDREW::OSTROM | ETP Engineering Mgr. | Fri Apr 22 1994 14:04 | 9 |

    Basically simple:

        Stroke play: I scored 74, you scored 78, I win.

        Match play: Compare the score on each hole. Low score wins
                        the hole. I win 9 holes, you win 5, we tie 4, I
                        win.

    Thank you.

    Wait a minute. How come you won both match and stroke play? I think
    those 4 ties where really mine. :-}

| 1883.6 | 4 ball | AKOCOA::MKELLY |  | Tue May 17 1994 14:41 | 16 |
| | I play in lots of tournys - I really prefer 4 ball. It incorporates
    handicap, it usually makes the match come down to the last hole, shot.
    It includes three levels of strategy
                     golfer vs course
                     teammate to teammate
                     team vs team
    It forces you to play the game differently and causes you to change the
    club and the shot many more times.
    If match play (like the Ryder Cup) is the next big sporting event
    I think that four ball will be right behind.

    4 ball is two teams in one foursome stroking of off the lowest handicap
    and playing match. My partner is a 7 and is never in trouble,
    and is a shrewd old codger from Maine. So I can hit first or second or
    go for it or play safe or choose to let the other team hit or ....
