I need some help regarding clubs I would like to purchase.
Some context first:
I played (poorly) a number of years ago for a short period of
time. Never took any lessons. Managed to lose at least a three
pack of balls everytime out and essentially developed what I
believe to be the quintessential slice of all time. Approximately
10 years ago, I gave away all of my equipment and kissed the game
goodbye...
...Until at a recent family reunion everyone grabbed a nine iron
and started hitting balls. So did I and here we go again, only
this time I plan on some lessons, etc.
My dilemma. I've decided not to purchase used clubs.
I have decided not to spend a lot of money, but I would like
to get some decent clubs that I can rely on, etc. I'm limiting
myself (my wife told me) to no more than $250.00
Most probably, I would play in the DEC league and occasional
play during Spring and Summer, so they need to hold up.
I need opinions on:
Allied AG800 irons (steel shaft)
Dunlop irons (either Visions or Seve Ballesteros Gold)
Wilson 1200LT irons
I don't know much in terms of Allied. I understand they've been around
since 1925 and only making golf equipment. I know something of Dunlop
and Wilson.
Of the three, the set that seemed to fit and feel the best was the
Allied.
I would really value any comments that you may have.
I can be reached at DTN 241-4213
or A1 (Jim Chamberlain @WMO)
or Vaxmail (WMOIS::Chamberlain.j)
Thanks,
-Jim

| 1601.1 | Feel for you clubs... | CTOAVX::DAVENPORT | Tue Oct 20 1992 10:06 | 12 | |
Jim,
You probably answered your own question as far as the type of
club you should use. We all can give you comments on clubs,feel,etc..It
is really up to the individual as to what kind of club to use. If it feels
good and you can hit the ball with some consitency then use those clubs. The
price (ideally) is not a queston it is whether the club fits your style of
play, then you can look at cost.
go with the flow,

I'd still suggest buying used clubs and using the money you save for a
few lessons. There isn't anything around that you can buy for $250
that's worth the dough. You're better off with top grade, perimeter
weighted used clubs. More forgiving, will hold their value better and,
more importantly, will give you $$ for lessons.

Check out the clubs made by Square Two. They have 3 or 4 different
models starting at $249 (irons). They claim that each set is
"matched"-- the swing weights of each club are equal. I've seen them at
Nevada Bob's, Golf USA, and some of the independent shops. I've swung
them a few times, they feel pretty good...

Thanks folks for the input. Common sense prevailed.
I bought used Wilson 1200LTs after all, at a very good
price (2 months old @ $100, 3-PW). New they run $170.
Now for a putter!
Thanks again,

re.-1
I bought the same irons about two years ago and was told that they were
being discontinued. (in scotland that is)
I paid a little more than you did so it seems that you have got
yourself a real bargain.....
btw..They are really good clubs........

Dav,
Appreciate the input. There seems to be a bunch of 1200LT variations
here. If you need any additions or info, contact me as per my
original note, 1601.
Thanks,
Jim
