| I can't remember how far from the airport it is, but one of my
favorite stops was Pasa Tiempo (sp?), in Santa Cruz. Beautiful Alister
Mackenzie course, that I liked better than Spyglass Hills -- and it
was about half the price. $45 three years ago. That may seem steep to
a New Englander, but compared to the Pebble Beach area, it's a
bargain.

| This a problem for the MAD HACKER. He has intimate knowledge of the
environ. My advice is to get a book from the Monterey Chamber of
Commerce. I do know that the oldest course in the West is Old Del
Monte in Monterey. Nice course, next to the Hyatt. Owned by the group
that owns Pebble. You also have Poppy Hills that was used during the
PGA tournament (ATT CLASSIC). The pros really bitched because it is
"too unfair". Great courses in the immediate Monterey peninsula.
As for SF and south, you have a course in San Mateo, right next to the
freeway, just south of the airport. Someone like the Mad HAcker could
get you even better info.

I would second Pasatiempo as a good course to play on the way to Monterey.
You said that while you were in Monterey you will be able to play Spanish Bay.
I loved that course. On about 1/2 the holes I could imagine that I was in
Scotland.
I'm not sure that there is such a thing as a cheap course in Monterey. The
last time I was there Spy Glass & Poppy Hills weren't too outlandish (compared
to Pebble Beach). You could walk @ Spy Glass which saves bucks on cart fees.
If Spy Glass & Poppy Hills are within your price range (or a reasonable
stretch) I'ld play Spy Glass. It's a great course.

| Ok, here we go !!!
About 1/2 hour south of the SF airport is a course called
Shoreline in Redwood City, also you could stop in Santa Clara
and play the Santa Clara G&T which is right next to Great
America amusement park and the Digital offices. There are numerous
munis in the area also. As far as Pasatiempo goes, they get $70
now and it is about 1 1/2 hours from the airport. In Monterey on
Sunday, I would recommend one of the following as they are all good;
Laguna Seca $35 408-373-3701 (Robert Trent Jones)
Rancho Canada $40 408-624-0111 (2 courses)
Pacific Grove $18 408-373-3063 (poor mans Pebble Beach)
Old Del Monte $35 408-373-2436 ( at the Hyatt)
1 hour up the coast;
Aptos Seascape $35 408-688-3213
De Laveaga $25 408-423-7212
Pasatiempo $70 408-426-3622 (semi-private)
Pajaro Valley $32 408-724-3851
All these course allow walking and there are others that I haven't
mentioned. These are my affordable favorites in the areas covered.
Pasatiempo is high but it is a great course.
There is also a course along 101 south of San Jose that might
be of interest. Riverside GC $20 408-463-0622 . It would be about
1 1/2 hours from the airport.
It is possible to play till after 8 p.m. now and gets longer every
day so consider that also when making your plans.

Thanks for bailing us out HackMan. I concur, there is no such thing as
a bad golf course in the Peninsula area.
Make sure that the visitors come with proper attire, since some of
these courses do not allow shorts and even though it is summer time,
the weather can be down right damp and cold. Suggest a sweater, wind
breaker combo to allow for the layered look.
