Nick Faldo finished fourth in the French Open at Chantilly yesterday.
He finished 2 strokes behind Phillip Walton and Bernhard Langer. Walton
went on to win it at the 2nd extra hole in the play off. Hopefully this
is a good sign that he is getting back to full fitness in time for The
Open which starts on the 19th of July.
I must point out that in my last note (978 I think) that I was only
passing on information and not making an excuse for Nicks failings at
the U.S. Open. In fact Nick is nowhere near the top of my Christmas
card list. About 10 years ago he had Sandy Lyle disqualified from the
Nigerian Open (I think). Sandys' crime? On the first green because the
sun was reflecting off the top of his putter he stuck a piece of
sticking plaster to the top of the head. This apparantely contravines
the rules which states that you can not alter the playing
characteristics of a club once the round has started. Trivial Huh?
This is one of the reasons the two haven't exactly been best buddies
throughout the years.
Me being Scottish it was obvious I would come down on Sandys' side.
Here's hoping that Sandy can get things sorted out in time for the
Open. Though I must admit if Nick is in or around at the death and he's
the only Brit there then I'll be shouting for him.
