| Hi,
Great round for Sandy at that great, challenging seaside course.
Bet the wind and rain was down a bit!
The Portmarnock pro could tell you ales about his wedge and the
Open if he wanted to.
Aways liked visiting that area and eating fine fish as well as viewing
the fine Irish coastline. Also played the course, but wish to keep
my score a secret.

| The final results of the Irish Open were -
278 Ian Woosnam (Won on 1st playoff hole with birdie 3)
278 Philip Walton (Ire)
282 Ronan Rafferty(Ire)
282 Mark McNulty (South Africa)
282 Brett Ogle (?)
Sandy Lyle finished up with 73,74,77 to fall back in the field.
I was there on the course to see Sandy finish his record round.
Its great to be there for a bit of history.
Woosnam is HOT, DAMN HOT at the moment !

Well Sandy had one good round anyway!!!
After his course record on Thursday, he went steadily backwards
and followed the 64 with rounds of 73, 74 and 76 to finish just
one under for the tournament.
The winner, as last year, was Mighty Mouse Woosie, who won in a
play-off at the first extra hole from Philip Walton of Ireland.
They both ended at 10 under par.
The minor placings were filled by Brent Ogle (Australia), Mark
McNulty (S.Africa) and Ronan Rafferty (N.Ireland). Jose_Maria
Olazabel was just behind these three.
The second place gives Philip Walton a good chance of making the
Ryder Cup team. Woosie, Ronan, and Jose-Maria are certain of their
places already. Whether Sandy will be chosen as one of Tony Jacklin's
three wild cards is not so certain.

| I was really interested in Tom Weiskopf's performance! I have always
liked his swing and his game (*he* was the guy I always rooted for
as a kid). In his prime he was an excellent player, but was always
2nd to Jack and Johnny Miller. If only he had a better temperament ...
He openned with a respectable 71-72 before closing with something
like 74-77. Pretty good on Portnamorrock (?) for a guy who does not
play competitive golf! Does anyone know if he just lost interest/
concentration or was he over his head the first two rounds?

Tom Weiskopf is yet another of the fine golf products of the state
of Ohio and Ohio State. He was raised in Bridgeport, Ohio and was
a high school teammate of John Havelick. His mother was one of the
top women amateurs in the state as late as a few years ago.
Tom is into both course design and TV work, but still plays golf.
The visit to Ireland was no doubt in preparation to his appearance
at Royal Troon for this years OPEN. Remember, he won an OPEN at
Royal Troon!
He walked the links with the confidence of a Parris Island or Sandhurst
drill instructor, but never seemed to have mental discipline to
allow meeting his full physical potential. He was highly recommended
for the Tour by his college coach and was signed by Wilson before
he had graduated from ohio State. His temperament was not that expected
from a champion and he reminded me, even though I admired his golf,
as the Tony Jacklin of U.S. golf.
