558.0. "New Seabury" by BTO::HOGANP () Mon Mar 20 1989 12:42

    Well I played New Seabury this weekend and I must say it was a
    humbeling experience. It is a very challenging course and a real
    pleasure to play no matter how well you do. The weather was warm,
    mid to upper 40's and windy particularly on the holes that border
    the ocean(25 to 30 mph). I played with a couple of guys who are
    members and they said the wind is always blowing and it is not uncommon
    to have the same conditions. There are only three holes that actually
    border the ocean  but oh those three holes can play
    llllooooonnnnggggg. They are all over 400 yds but in the wind they
    play like they are 500 yds. well actually the first is a par 5 and
    is 500 +. I managed an 8 on that one, four putting. The greens gave
    a new meaning to the word fast. After you get by those first three
    holes the wind does not effect the ball as much and the course is
    more managable. The back nine is like a totally different course.
    The front is flat with little or no woods but plenty of fairway
    bunkers and water to worry about and the back is very hilly, not
    so much water but the bunkers are in play. From the whites the course
    plays about 6900 yds. The par threes are really nice. From the white
    teees they are not real long but if played from the blues your looking
    at 200+ and not alot of room to mess up. From the whites the avg.
    par three is about 175 and really beatiful golf holes. Well bunkered
    some with water you just have to see it I am not a good enough writer
    to explain them to you. 
    
    Well I finished with a 92 and felt okay with that. I had a couple
    of real bad holes. I started with a triple and a quad on the first
    two holes but then played pretty good until the last three holes.
    Had a couple of snowmen on the par fives, a bird and missed a foot
    and a half put for another with some pars sprinkled in. I felt I
    played better than my scored showed but I always feel that way.
    
    Oh by the way 30 bucks , ouch.
    
    Bottom line a great golf course and a real challenge.

	Was interested to see your note today. My father was over this weekend saying how he loved playing at New Seabury, but had not been down there for a few years. I was thinking I would take him down to play there and maybe the Captains for his birthday. Can you tell me what town New Seabury is in? Also would you happen to know a phone number for calling for information? BTW how late into the spring can nonmembers play? Thanks in advance for any info you can pass along, I dont get to take him out to often and I know he will really enjoy playing there one more time. Regards, Jamie

	Sounds like you played the blue course. I love playing this course when my game is in shape. The green course is much easier. It is very short but has some interesting holes. I paid $35 last year (ouch is right) but I won $35 from my opponent (yes, I played real well - shot 79 on the green course). Mike

	I am in the process of getting five lady foursomes together to go to New Seabury. We are renting 4 Villa's that will accomodate four girls to a Villa. My question is this, how long is the Green course? Also, how long is the Blue course from the red tees? I was told the blue is a lot tougher to get off on on weekends, but that they could do it. We figured we'd play the blue one day and the green the next....any opinions?

	I played 'em both several years ago, and I thought the Green course was a lousy layout (decent shape, just easy and dull), but the Blue was TERRIFIC ! I played the Blue from the tips, so I'm not certain what the Ladies yardage is; I doubt it could be more than 6200 yds though. It's great to see the gals get together for an outing like this! After all, guys do this kind of thing all the time, and have a great time, so why not women too? For future reference, your group might like Taconic in Williamstown, Ma., or Equinox in Manchester, Vt. (gorgeous course, great shopping, good restaurants and Summer theater). --The Skoal Bandit

	There should be some laws about truth in advertising. Several weeks ago I called new seabury about making reservations to stay there and play golf. I was told that only people that were staying at the resort could use the golf courses and that there would not be any trouble getting off. Tee times could only be made 24 hours in advance. I called at 7:00 this morning to make saturday tee times on the blue course and was told that there were no available tee times. It turns out that 'members' can make tee times 48 hours in advance. Now I have nothing against members getting preferential treatment, but if I had known that there were such things as 'members' I probably would have made other arrangements. After grovelling with the man in the pro shop I was give one tee time around 8:00 (there are 6 of us playing) and told we could show up and see if the starter could get the remaining two off. He wouldn't let me set anything up for sunday ! I'm hoping for light rain and some empty slots ! -laura

	laura, i got the same treatment and lies this spring at new seabury, luckly we got to play the blue course both days, but a friend of mine never got to play the blue course, no empty slots, i also liked the part where they said i was going to be "on" the ocean, and when i got there it changed to an ocean view condo. peter
