    	When did you get your assignment letter or call or whatever?
    I'm waiting to hear what I need to do, I signed up as a walking
    scorer. Hope I get assigned to Arnie for one day and Chi Chi, the
    next.

  I was sent a mail message from the coordinator of the hole captains
this past wednesday.  I also signed up for walking scorer, so maybe
there's still a chance for you if you haven't heard! 
  Anybody out there seen hole # 11 before?

       The 11th is definitely not a par-3.  It's a par-4 (well, I'm about
       90% sure it's a 4 and not a 5), parallel to the lot where
       volunteers park their cars (alongside the road).  I recall it
       being reasonably straight, with a few trees on the right and a
       slightly elevated green.  
       
       The 10th parallels tha club access road, and you cross the street
       to reach the 11th tee. I'd guess that a lot of your concern will
       be to keep people from walking around in the tee area, since there
       would be lots of pedestrian activity going back and forth across
       the street.

    The 11th is a 'good' par 4 measuring 403 yards from the back tees.
    It realy is a nice hole to work on and to watch how the pros attack
    it. The hole is a slight dogleg left and the fairway is guarded
    on the left side by two large fairway bunkers. The green is both
    elevated and trapped well with a combination of sand and grass bunkers.
    Once on the surface of the green you are confronted with many ridges
    and a more than adequate slope downward from back to front.
    
    You might want to come on out to the Shootout on Tuesday 26-July
    to see just how the pros play the hole and to enjoy the relaxed
    atmosphere of the event.

    Wanted: Two experienced golfers willing to committ to five days
    as Hole Captain for the Digital Seniors Golf Classic on July 27th
    through July 31st. Have immediate openings for volunteers on the
    6th hole and the 15th hole. Assignment requires management of Marshal
    team, crowd control, knowledge of the game of golf. Benefits include
    daily lunch, front row seats to top-level golf and many more. Does
    not need to be a Digital Employee.

    Seriously, we are trying to locate two more people to act as Hole
    Captains for the 6th and 15th holes at Nashawtuc. We have many
    volunteers for the event but require a full 5 day committment as
    well as an understanding of the game and its etiquette. If

	I thought I would enter this note in case there are other volunteers
	who may be in the same situation.  After waiting to receive info
	about the Classic I inquired about the lack of information.  There
	was a mailing to marshalls & scorers that went out Thursday or Friday
	that I hadn't yet received.
	
	It notifies you that there is a meeting for Marshalls Tues or Wed
	7/19 & 20 @7 PM (front nine on Tuesday, back nine on Wed) and scorers 
	on Thurs 7/21 @7:30.

    I assume that the meetings mentioned in 323.7 will be held in the
    same place as last year (the club house of Nashawtuc). Is this correct?

    Yes, the meeting is at the club house.  I recieved my notice monday

    The 15th hole is a 345 yd. par 4 dogleg left. It is rated the easiest
    hole on the course. You will see a fairway bunker on the left at
    the dogleg and two bunkers around the green, one on the far left
    and one next to the green on the right. 
    A leaderboard will be in place in back of the green on the right.
    The hole is the furthest away from the clubhouse.

    How do DEC employees get tickets for the Classic? I heard rumors
    that they were $5 for DEC employess, is this true??

    I recieved 2 notices approx 3 weeks ago stating that I would be
    notified about meetings.  Have I heard anything more? NOOOOOOOO!

    I just found out all the meetings happened this week.  Can anyone
    tell me what the problem is?  Are they that disorganized this year?

    from the committee on Saturday, others I know received it Monday
    telling us of the meeting time/place. Call the Classic at the
    number listed in .0 . I'll check back there, if not I'll go look
    in my mail and post the number. BTW, they said last night that this
    year they have ~1100 volunteers vs 550 last year. This may have
    added to the confusion.
    
    Keith, a scorer for Wednesday and Saturday, and spectator the other
    days........

	I got my letter on Monday also. The number at the CC is
		617-371-0116.

	More confusion: they have run out of uniforms ! Last night they
	didn't have any 32 or 34 waist pants, hats or large shirts !

	Too make it even worse the pants are not hemmed ! I found their
	first suggestion: pick the pants up next Thursday (my first
	'work' day) somewhat ludicrous. The stuff MAY be in Saturday,
	but the CC is not exactly on my way home from work ! Oh well.

	p.s. FYI - Tuesday @1pm is a ten-man shootout and Chi-Chi is
	going to have another of his kid's clinics immediately after
	(~4pm). Admission and parking for these events is free...

    I checked on uniforms, they hope to have the new pants and caps
    tomorrow (7/26) afternoon.  They ask to please call first.  The
    alternative is navy blue pants.

    
    	Surely some of you people that worked the classic have some
    	input now that it is over...! WHat were the scores? Memorable
    	shots? Memorable moments? I know Chi chi won it, but who else
    	was up on top? How did Arnie do?

	I worked the 16th hole.  Several of the memorable shots there
	included:

	- Saturday I spent most of my time measuring drives.  I measured
	  about the last 2/3 groups.  The longest drive I measured was
	  Arnold Palmer; 266 yds.  Most of the long hitters were about
	  250 yds, most of the players were between 220-240.  (There
	  was a slight head wind.)
	- Saturday Zimbriski hit an approach shot that landed about 4in
	  beyond the hole hopped back hit the pin, and stopped about
	  2 in away from the hole. (He made the putt).
	- Sunday morning a guy in the first group I think his name was
	  Chuck Jones, from Dayton OH hit his drive 277 yds. to a
	  gallery of 5 marshalls.  It was the longest shot I saw on 
	  that hole.
	- Also memorable was seeing Bruce Crampton crack a smile.
	  (Unfortunately it was sacastic, because he missed a birdie
	  putt by about 1/2 in.)
	- Best save was the player who skipped their approach shot across
	  the pond, hit a wedge from the edge of the water to 3 ft &
	  made the putt for par.

	This was my first time marshalling.  I enjoyed it a lot.  I wasn't
	crazy about the color of the uniform pants, but I even got used
	to them!  Marshalling was more work than I thought, but it does
	have it's good points (like kneeling before the gallery as Bob
	Charles tried to make a birdie putt to send the tournament into
	a play-off.  I also had a nice conversation with Bob Toski as he
	waited for the other players.  (He started the conversation.)
	
	For those who may be considering volunteering next year there were
	a couple of things that no one mentioned when requesting volunteers.
	Volunteers can get in free days they aren't on duty.  They also
	feed you lunch & come around several times with soda & juice for
	the marshalls (this was especially appreciated Saturday when it
	was so hot.  There is also a buffet for the volunteers after the
	tournament Sunday evening.  Basically cold cuts, beer, soda, etc.
	but it was fun to trade experiences, etc.  I think that I'll
	probably volunteer again next year.

    	I had a good time also. I was a scorer on Wednesdays Pro-Am.
    I had JC Goosie for the pro. Hit the ball straight and kept it in
    play. Nice guy.
    	Friday I did the walking stats for Ben Smith, John Brodie, and
    Dick Rhyan. None were particulary talkative, but Brodies had spells
    where he would speak. It was intersting keeping the stats. There
    are 6 categories to be kept:  X if drive in fairway, number of shots
    to green or greenside bunker, shots from greenside bunker until putting,
    number of putts,  X if on green in regulation, and +/- in relation
    to par. Also had drive distance on 2 holes, the 7th and 16th. On
    Saturday, I had Pete Hessemer(shot a 9 over 81, worst round of
    the tournament, not a happy fella), Howie Johnson, and Bob Boldt(who
    nailed his drive on #7 293 yards). Next year I'll volunteer again
    as a scorer. It's a good way to see all the shots made, but
    unfortunately it's always the same person. Maybe next year I'll get
    some of the big names. Saturday was a bear to be walking, was it
    hot, and I never saw the soda cart until the 17th hole, they drive
    around but never near me. All in all, a good time.

    

    I was hole captain for #15...Some of the better shots were:
    
    	- 119 yards from the green, slamming the ball down 1/2" from
    	  the cup, rolling 6 feet past. He made the Birdie putt..
    
    	- 148 yards out, hitting the flag pole. Unfortunately, he missed
    	  the putt...
    
    	- Arnie hit a 1 iron 245 yards...
    
    	- From a fairway bunker, 120 yards out, the ball it 12 feet past
    	  the cup, spun backwards to within 3 feet...
    
    	- Several amatuers outshooting the pros during the Pro-Am...
    
    	- From under a tree, 120 yards, 10 feet from the pin...That's
    	  the one I liked best because that's where I usually hit them
    	  from.

    After watching these guys play golf, I think I'll take up bowling.

    To: Anyone from the committee who reads notes
    
    	I was very displeased with the "banquet" set up. I spent 5 FULL
    	days, standing in 100 degree sun or pouring rain. Yes, I did
    	see some great golf and talked with a lot of the pros, that
    	was fun. My displeasure with the "banquet" is the fact that
    	after all this, I had to stand in a Maintenance Garage surrounded
    	by equipment and oil spills and have another sandwich. 
    
    	The sandwich part wasn't what got me going, it was having it
    	in the maintanence garage. I felt like you were trying to segregate
    	us from everyone else. Behind the clubhouse would have been
    	fine. At least there, the surroundings were pleasent.
    
    	I will be back next year. I hope you can make better arrangements
    	to reward us for our hard work.

  You had a buffet in a maintenance garage?  I take it then that
they didn't invite the pro's out there to mingle with you guys?
That was one of the selling points for volunteering, a buffet where
you could mingle with the pros!

    	Did anyone happen to see Bob Charles' hole-in-one on the 8th
    hole on Saturday? 
    	My favorite holes on the course were #9, and #16, FWIW.
    
    	Glad I didn't hang around for the buffet. From what I heard
    on last years buffet, you got to go into the 19th hole and mingle.
    Too many volunteers for that this year, I guess???

	Glad to know I wasn't the only one who felt slighted by the
	banquet in the caddy shack.  I really enjoy working these
	events but was rather surprised when security told me there
	was a change of plans and only members were allowed to go
	to the clubhouse and eat and talk with the pros.  I was told
	that was one of our perks for working the event.  There really
	seems to be an "us" and "them" mentality between members and
	non-members at Nashawtuc.

	Can't say whether I will volunteer next year or not.  Between
	my wife and I it cost us $90 to "volunteer" our time but that
	didn't hurt as much as being treated as second class citizens.
	Two years may be enough.

	Didn't Chi Chi make some reference to the fact that he wouldn't
	be able to make all this money if it weren't for the "free"
	efforts of the volunteers ?  He'd probably turn in his honorary
	membership to Nashawtuc if he knew how we were rewarded.
	
	Oh well.  Next year I'll probably just be a spectator.
