| 1135.1 | No - it is not available for use by an UPS | LANDO::DROBNER | TurboLaser Engineering - 8200/8400 | Thu Mar 13 1997 17:07 | 8 |
| | No, it is really not usable, an ECO should be in the works to remove
    the wording on the label that mentions this "UPS" connector.
    The signals on the connector are logic level signals that would
    indicate status of AC and DC power.
    All the external UPS that I have seen; use a serial line or network
    connection to talk with the system under UPS.

| 1135.3 | No serial port on AS8200 support UPS | HGOM22::DAVYSUN |  | Mon Mar 31 1997 03:25 | 9 |
| | Hi , Is what your mean that no serial port on AS8200 can support UPS ?

    ANd if a customer has to use AS8200 to control UPS , They have to buy

    a UPS wihch can support network connection and a controlled software

    working on Digital Unix. Is this right ?

| 1135.4 | The 8200 front panel connector "UPS" | LANDO::DROBNER | TurboLaser Engineering - 8200/8400 | Wed Apr 02 1997 09:37 | 17 |
| | I'll try to clarify my statement.

    On the 8200 front panel is a connector that has a label "External UPS
    Power". This connector is NOT usable for connection to a UPS that is
    looking for a "serial line" type connection.
    We will be removing the wording from this connector shortly.

    Most UPS now days require a serial line connection. On 8200/8400
    systems that is not that easy to do. You need the PCI (DWLPB), the
    PCI to EISA bridge (KFE70), and a serial line module (CXI01).

    The other method is a network connection from the UPS, many UPS
    support a network connection as a communication path between the
    system and UPS.

| 1135.5 | Connection & Alternatives? | HGOVC::JAEILLEE |  | Mon Apr 28 1997 05:44 | 21 |

    Thanks Howard your clear statement.

    In addition, please make me clear on following questions:

    1) If a customer has an UPS listed in SOC, does the "Power Management
       software" in ServerWORKS Manager kits support "Serial Connection
       (ie:CXI01) and ALSO " Network Connection(ie: Twisted pair/Thin
       wire)"?

    2) In case a customer has an UPS not listed in SOC, does the customer
       have alternatives in order to use full function of "UPS monitoring
       and unattended shutdown" like the software in ServerWORKS Manager kits?

     Appreciate your answer in adavnce.

     Regards,
