    Hi,

I have a '74 Z28 Type LT Camaro. I have spent thousands restoring
the frame, floorboards, truck, rear pannels, springs, shocks etc.

The engine is starting to go and I have lost interesting since
I have another project car as well.

My question is this: what is the best way to dispose of this car?
I am not sure if it will even pass inspection at this time since one of
the doors is not air tight.

            Any good ideas?

    Regards,

    Ken

Well, the typical summer sale is on with new Vettes, so they've dragged me
kicking and screaming to the signature line. As a result, I offer:
1 each: The Plastic Bullet
For those new to the file, this is my 1985 stick Corvette, black, with see-thru
top, leather, Bose stereo, etc., with 63,400 miles on the clock.
$9500.00
THE GOOD NEWS
-------------
You'll have to search far and wide to find an '85 that's in as good a condition
as this one. The body, interior, engine and drivetrain are all in *very* nice
shape. I have put in Mobil 1 oil every 3,000 miles since the first change,
except that in late fall I do an oil change, then again in early spring.
Usually, that change covers only 1,000 miles or less, since I don't drive the
car in winter unless the roads are bone dry. I also use synthetic lubricants in
the transmission and differential. Including the last fillup, the car has
averaged 21.27 mpg since new, which isn't bad when you consider the EPA ratings
of 16/22. However, that's not what this car is really all about, and that's a
key reason why it's in notes. I hope to find a kindred spirit who knows (or has
read about) this car, and is primarily interested in its *performance*.
Back in April, I took my little pet up to New England Dragway, and recorded
quarter mile times of 13.65, 13.64 and 13.59, at speeds as high as 102.6 mph.
This is as quick, or a bit quicker than the latest LT1 Vette, 300ZX Turbo or
Mazda RX-7, and significantly quicker than the average Stealth or 3000GT turbos.
Corrected for "standard day" conditions (which is what Car & Driver and some
other publications do with their actual test results), the car would be about a
tenth of a second quicker, at over 103 mph. It also has somewhat better
cornering ability than when it was new, due primarily to the Michelin XGT+
sneakers in size 255/45ZR16 front, and 315/40ZR16 rear.
THE BAD NEWS
------------
Or, at least potentially bad.
Over the last 8 years the car has made something approaching 200 quarter mile
passes during practice sessions at New England Dragway. Perhaps the 200 number
is a little high, but it has done at *least* 150. Basically, I'd take it to NED
after each idiot-savant little change that I did, to see if it made a
difference, since the clocks don't lie. I can tell you two things about this.
The first is that I had all the synchros in the gearbox replaced a couple of
years back, although only the second-gear synchro actually needed replacement,
due to a couple of ham handed missed shifts by yours truly. As long as the
gearbox was out, I thought what the hell, so we did it all. While I was at it, a
new clutch went in. Although the original showed only normal wear, the same
reasoning applied. The second thing is that the engine is strong and tight (it
uses about a half-quart of oil in 3,000 miles, which is precisely what it has
been doing since new), and the rest of the drivetrain is also in great shape.
MORE BAD NEWS (maybe)
---------------------
Two years back (or maybe three. I forget), I got punched in the driver's door by
a Cougar, and the entire door had to be replaced, along with the left front
(lower) fender panel, the battery (just forward of the door), two wheels (not
structurally damaged, but cosmetically marred), the forward lower edge of the
rear fender, and what appeared to be thousands of little components made of
platinum. I took the opportunity to have most of the car repainted at the time,
at my expense. There was no frame damage, and the dealer I'm ordering the new
car from thinks the repair was so good that he's actually condescended to
relieve me of $8500 less than he would without the trade, which is essentially
full wholesale value, counting the low mileage addition to net worth.
MORE *GOOD* NEWS
----------------
I want $9500 for the car, and don't have a lot of room to move from that number,
because I'm greedy, *but* also because you would get all the extras, which I
intend to sell separately if I actually trade the car in. These include the shop
manual, an extra pair of Michelin XGT+ 315/40ZR16 sneakers, which are worn about
25-30% (and which go for $500 plus, mailorder, or close to $350 each, at your
local tire dealer), the aforementioned pair of marred wheels ($400 each, new),
plus the kit to remove, polish and restore the clearcoat on those wheels, plus
all the Corvette-original parts which have been superseded in my smog-legal
quest for speed.
CHANGES FROM BOWLING GREEN STANDARD
-----------------------------------
*Air filter lid cut out for extra flow (I have the original).
*K & N oiled-element air filter.
*Mass airflow sensor screens removed.
*TPIS airfoil (In the throttle body).
*Adjustable fuel pressure regulator (set at stock '86-'88 specs)
*Small crank pulley (turns accessories slower for reduced power drain and wear).
*Hypertech Stage II engine control chip (plus a Stage I and the stock chip, as
well).
*160 degree thermostat.
*Jacobs high performance distributor cap and rotor.
*TPIS high performance spiral wound plug wires.
*Synthetic lubricants.
*Competition Cams "Magnum" roller tipped rockers in the 1.6:1 ratio, for reduced
valve train friction and added valve lift.
*Crane valve springs.
*John Lingenfelter/Accel smog legal, ceramic/metallic coated exhaust headers
(catalytic convertor is retained, as are stock mufflers - I *hate* excess noise).
As mentioned, I have all the original parts, including valve train components
(catalogued by cylinder and valve so they can be reinstalled in their original
positions).
To sum up, if you've read all the way to here in this record breaking for-sale
note, give me a call :-).

    ----------------------
1974 Chevy Impala (??, full size, not sure of name) convertible
    All white.
    Car looks in perfect condition.
Has 454 cu. in with dual exhausts.
I know this isn't really a "musclecar" but it would make a nice
    cruiser.
Price on the window is $5795 and is coming down every week.
I have no financial interest in this car. I don't even know who owns
it but could get a phone number or give directions to go see it.
It's on Rt 130 between Hollis and Brookline. It looks like a great
deal. I wish I had some spare change around.

| | Wayne,

I have a similar car I've driven over 40,000 miles during the past 3
years. Mine is a '73 Caprice convertible, fire engine red, 400 small block,
dual exhaust. It's got 140K+ miles on it and is ready for a complete
renovation ( engine, trans, interior, paint...).

I see similar cars in Hemmings or local adds in the $3-6K range
depending on condition. They don't have a lot of collector / classic
interest but are fun to drive (straight, not around corners). I can take
the whole neighborhood to Dairy Queen at once.

The biggest "feature" of these cars ( and all other GM 72-76 full
sized convertibles ) is their top mechanism. Its called a "clamshell"
top. They save a great deal space in the back seat, particularly in the
shoulder area. They are also very difficult to get adjusted to work
correctly. I had a very tough time finding a person to put a new
    top on it.

This car looks great, which you don't need to be told if you know me. It's in
truly excellent condition, as well (though you should, as a matter of course,
have it looked at by a pro). The best thing about this particular car, though,
is the way it *runs*, as documented elsewhere in this note.
