I guess these have been out for awhile (date on the sales brochure was
1988) but Union Music in Worcester has a demo Ensoniq Acousitc Wave
Piano (AWP) on display. $2595, I think.
The model is AWP-4000, there used to be a 3000 and 5000 but they merged
the two together to make a 4000, confused yet?
You get ten patches, two grands, "ragtime" (detuned), two electrics,
vibes (nice), marimba, harpsichord and (with automatic key splits)
acoustic and electric bass. Stereo chorus and "enhance" (aural
exciter?), volume and "brilliance" sliders, headphone jack. Four track
sequencer (primitive), 10 songs, 2700 notes. Sequence memory can be
dumped/loaded via sys-ex. MIDI in/out/thru, can select any channel.
Auxiliary inputs to the audio amp (for playin along with tapes/CD/other
MIDI modules). Velocity, no aftertouch. 88 keys, reasonable action.
Satin ebony finish, bench included.
Sound system is by Bose, full stereo, 25 watts per channel. It plays
pretty loud with no breaking up and has a real kick in the low end
(where most home digital pianos don't cut it). I'll leave a critique
of the piano sound itself up to someone else. It wouldn't fool *me*
and I'm not a pianist, but then none of the pianos I've heard to date
have fooled me except Kurzweil.

| I tried the one that they had in Union Music. I was disappointed
to find two or three keys that were sticky. If I pushed hard enough
they would drop but they were basicly unplayable. Hopefully this
is a minor problem, easily fixed...

They have one at Daddy's in Nashua and one of the keys is lower
than the rest and it is hard to push down.

i played the one at union, and while i had no problems with the
key's, i had lot's of problems with the piano sounds. Too much
kick on the low-end, and it seems to me i can get almost the
same sound out my my cz101 (not good) for both acoustic piano
settings.
I'd really like to invest in something like this, mainly for
my kids, but so far, i have not heard any good "piano" sounds.
Then again, i have not heard the kurzweil yet....
