From a report on the Audio Engineering Society convention in Paris (March 1988), as reported in the May issue of Gramophone: "Akai made a bid for lower priced multi-track digital recording with their DR-1200 machine giving 12 audio tracks on standard 8mm video cassettes at 16-bit linear with switchable 44.1 or 48 kHz sampling. Three decks can be controlled from one locator unit to provide 36-track capability." So you could start out with 12 track, then upgrade to 24 and then to 36 tracks with no loss in investment. No mention of price, of course.

It'd be interesting to find how much music one could store on an
8mm video cassette... now if you could only mix to stereo digitally..

I say this unit at the fall AES show in New York. The Akai
rep said it should 'sell' for about $28,000. If you look at
the prices of 24 track digital machines, then $56K looks good!
I don't remember the time per tape, but I'd venture 10 to 20
minutes like their analog 12 track. A unit like this would be a
boon to 'jingle' studios and other commercial uses (cheaper than
it's main competition, the 'direct to disk' units like Synclavier).
Also, size is a big advantage. Two of these units in a rack, plus
the controller would be very easy to deal with!
No, I'm not buying one....

Well, the first "home" digital multitrack recorder is here....
Akai has introduced the DR1200 "ADAM" recorder. It uses 8mm
videotapes, another machine in Akai's history of non-standard tape
types. At least they are easy to get.
The photo shows a large rack mount unit, maybe 8 spaces, plus a contol
console with lots of buttons, LED ladders but no knobs!!!
Text blurb says it has an autolocator, which can lock up to 3 together
for 36 tracks.
*No price quoted*. Sit down in a comfortable chair, breathe deeply and
