I was unable to find any reference in this notes file to the Korg
DS-8 model synthesizer.
Does anyone out there know of it, and can you give me any information
about it (other than the glossy stuff).
I was in Union Grove Music today, and saw it demo-ed by the
salesperson. It was pretty nice, and was being priced at appx $800.
One important thing I wanted to get answered, is if it's being
discounted from $1200 because of upgrades, or (whatever) reasons.

According to a review in the January Electronic Musician, the DS-8
does indeed give FM sounds with analog style programming, but the
catch is that you only get one or two algorithms to use.
So, while it's easier to program (maybe) than a Yamaha DX, you don't
get all the programming flexibility of a DX, either.
On price, Korg has just introduced the 707 which is a DS-8 with
a 49-note keyboard and an art-deco case at $900 list (there is a
note on it, do a dir/keyword=korg) which, together with rumors of
a new 4-op Yamaha DX at $800 suggests there is some price pressure.

The DS-8 also has some digital effects (a delay, and a chorus, I
believe) which the 707 doesn't have. (or not as far as I can tell).
I found the DS-8 quite unremarkable. I think the 707 is nifty,
though (I've always wanted a portable kbd).
The prices of the Yamaha gear is dropping a bit, too.
Considering that a DX7s is selling for $1050 (at least that was
the remarkable price that I heard), that would put price pressure
on virtually every synth which priced greater than $1000, particulary
an FM synth. (I'm not so sure I believe that price quote.)
