Where is a reference for the relative harmonic weightings of
common instruments, for use in additive harmonic synthesis
of tones? I want to make waves.

I have been using the Seashore Psychology of Music, 40 years old.
The violin sound is pure AM radio.
The bassoon wasn't bad.

sometime in the past year, KEYBOARD columnist Terry Fryer, in his
'On Sampling' column, discussed acoustic instrument 'formant'
frequencies.. that is, the characteristic fixed peaks and valleys
imparted by the instrument body.. is this what you mean by
'relative harmonic weightings of common instruments' ?
.. if so, I can try and find the article as it gave some reference
materials where one could find tables of these formants.
.. or are you talking about the characteristics of the individual
waveforms themselves ? Paul Dickson sent me a paper on synthesizing
acoustic waveforms, albeit from an FM perspective.

I have old keyboards; I'll look for it so I can look for the things
it refers to. I could look in the computer music journal index
too.
thanks

See "The Synthesist's Guide to Acoustic Instruments" or something
like that. I'll get a proper reference for you. You can order
it from the Mix Bookshelf.
