The Sony F-1 goes for about 800. You can get the equivalent (a
501-ES (or is it the 601-ES, now) for about six bills.
It's a seller's market, though.

| 'Q' Audio in cambridge carries all three Sonys; big bucks though.
Techniques makes one and Sansui makes one or two (one is portable
and runs on a battery pack). I think Stereo Discounters carries
one or both.
One nice thing you can do with *one* PCM unit and two VCRs, is
playback one vcr, play along with it, mix the two and record onto
the other vcr.

| Any updates on this? Lechmere's can get a DX900 for $900, but I
hear they can be had elsewhere for $600-$700. But, an adapter sans
VCR - shouldn't it cost $300 to $500? Surely there's some used
market somewhere ... Or, anybody know where some plans for building
one might be? Sure wouldn't mind some sort of PAIA or Heathkit
version ...

| Well, I've called around just for some info. Most dealers don't
even know what PCM is. Those that do indicate that apparently all
makes, except possibly the Toshiba DX900 (for now) are out of stock
and discontinued. I called Tape Complex and spoke to Jay. They
support PCM tapes that folks make and prefer this format because,
unlike DAT, you can edit PCM tapes. But, even they would like to
have a couple more units and have been unable to find them (new
or used). He felt the Toshiba was good, even though it only had
14-bit resolution. The used market on these beasts is non-existant.
Owners will not give them up since the quality is on par with DAT, but
for a lot less. Even if I got a DX900 and lived with the 14-bit
resolution, there is question as to how long this will be supported.
This is really a crying shame! Everything about PCM seems to be
superior as a recording format over DAT (in my view), but it is
a dying standard. Now, if THOR could only come soon ...
Looks like my best option will be to rent a master deck when the
time comes to dump to master. I'm checking into this option. With
this method, I could work up all my tunes as before (dumping to a
metal-tape master with Dolby B for now). But, when I'm ready to make
a master, I can rent a master deck and re-do all my stuff. Should
take about a month. I'll post my results on a search for a master deck.
