Have any of you Mirage owners ever had problems with disk drive
alignment? And is there any information available on doing the
alignment yourself?
My friend's Mirage is refusing to load sample #3 from some factory
formatted disks, but seems to work fine on plain Maxell disks that
he formats himself. We suspect the dirve may be slightly out of
alignment. Most repair places charge $50 just to open the cover
and another $50 if they actually DO anything! If the drive needs
to be aligned at regular intervals, it would be real nice to learn
how to do it yourself. I can do this easily for my Commodore drive,
but it may be somewhat more complicated for the Mirage. Thanks

| 944.1 | Generic drive? | JAWS::COTE | 115db, but it's a DRY thud... | Fri Sep 11 1987 15:57 | 10 |
I would suspect that most of those drives are made by a small
handfull of companies. (I know mine *sounds* just like a Mac
when it's reading or writing.)
Is that the same drive as on your PC?
Popping the top on the Mirage is easy. (So is pulling all the keys
off!). If you can do your PC, you can probably do the Mirage.

| 944.2 | disk or power supply problem??? | HPSTEK::RENE | Drink your big black cow | Tue Dec 01 1987 16:43 | 31 |
Hey mirage owners (or anyone else for that matter) How would
you diagnose this problem...
I have one of the first version mirages. I bought it the instant
it came out, nov. 1985 i think. I have, and still do use it very
often. Since I bought it , it has been out 30 weekends out of
52. Never ever had a problem loading disks. Well, now I do have
a problem. It started two weekends ago when halfway through the
night when I tried to load a new sample, I'd get 'DE'. After that,
nothing could be loaded until I shut it off and rebooted. then it
would be fine...for a while. Last weekend, It would boot up fine
and I could load in different samples ok. One set into the gig and
the old 'DE' came up..I turned it off and tried to reboot. 'ud'
kept coming up. No matter what operating system rev, or disk I
used made any difference. I let it 'cool down' for 20 min. Booted
up ok. One song later changing a sample and the dreaded 'DE' again.
I kept the machine off for the rest of the night (Argh !) I let
it cool down for three more sets and tried it. Now it won't boot
any operating system at all. Sometimes when I turn it off and on
quickly, the two bars appear '__' like usual then the thing just
shuts itself off. Anyway, being of the power supply persuasion
that is where I point my finger. Do you all agree ? Any ideas?
Does anyone have schematics ? Could it be the drive ?
Any info appreciated...

| 944.3 | First guess would be sensitive drive... | JAWS::COTE | Sequencists are musicians too! | Tue Dec 01 1987 17:07 | 19 |
From the fact that it's getting worse, my first guess would be the
drive. Let's face it floppy drives take a beating on the road despite
the best of care.
Progression:
1. dE - Little out of alignment, sees disc but can't
read.
2. ud - more misalignment - cant make out blocks.
3. __ (poof) doesn't believe disk is really there.
Sounds like it's time for (a) a trip to Malvern or (b) breaking
out the o'scope and DVM...
Let me know what happens. My Mirage is that old!
