    I need to get a compressor/limiter and a noise gate for the home
    studio operation.

    Anyone have anything to say about what's available?

    The idea here is to get something that will will do a good all around
    job in mono for input signals only, ranging the spectrum from vocals
    to guitars to drums...etc.

| 267.1 | what's a noise gate? -:) | CANYON::MOELLER | Wed Mar 12 1986 11:08 | 11 | |
| I've been very happy with an IBANEZ Multieffects unit - contains
    a compressor/limiter, stereo chorus, parametric EQ, and an analog
    delay unit with only 3k frequency range. It works with mic level
    signals, mono in/mono out, or mono in/stereo out. the volume out
    in the compressor/limiter will also boost the voltage to line
    level. the compressor smooths out vocals and gives drums a more
    even, yet percussive feel. Sounds real interesting on bass as
    well, gives a plucked sound even on 'round' tones in.

| 267.2 | Check Out dbx and Symetrix | ERLANG::FEHSKENS | Wed Mar 12 1986 12:53 | 14 | |
| dbx makes some stuff you might want to look at. Their 166 is a
    stereo noise gate/compressor unit at $475. They also make a single channel
    compressor (the 163x) that can be slaved with another box (sorry,
    no model number) to make it into a stereo noise gate, stereo
    compressor, or one noise gate and one compressor. $125/box! =>
    $250 for the stereo chameleon! Specs aren't quite as good as the
    166, but what do you want for $250?

    I have a Symetrix 501 compressor/peak limiter that works real nice.
    Don't remember what I paid for it. Symetrix has a nice line of
    this sort of effect.

| 267.3 | BOSS RCL-10 | BEAGLE::MULELID | Thu Mar 13 1986 15:04 | 7 | |
| You also have the BOSS RCL-10 in the micro rack series. This has
    a noise gate, compressor, expander and limiter function and the
    cost in europe will be aprox. $150. I guess that means its cheaper
    in the U.S.A. I have only read good reviews on this unit.
