| 17.1 | Library Grand Opening. | DYO780::SCHAFER | Brad - back in Ohio. | Wed Jan 18 1989 14:35 | 24 |
A library of MIDI tools, utilities and patch dumps for various
synthesizers has been established and is accessible to all users on the
Easynet. The library is located at:
{DYO780,36869}::DISK$USER05:[MIDILIB]
There are currently 3 accessible subdirectories:
DEPOSIT - repository for contributed library elements.
PATCHES - patch dumps for various synthesizers
TOOLS - programs and MIDI tools for various computers
To retrieve something from the library, simply copy it to your node
and then transfer it to your favorite computer.
To submit something to the library, copy it to the [.DEPOSIT] subdir
and send mail to the librarian (currently DYO780::SCHAFER) describing
what you've submitted and where you got it from.
Post gripes in topic 14 or send mail to the librarian.
A directory will be forthcoming.

Note 2399.0 AMIGA -> DX7 SYSEX DUMP No replies
GVA05::BERGMANS 24 lines 26-JUL-1990 05:49
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I recently became aware of the patches library on
MIDI::MIDI$DUA1:[MIDILIB]
The question is, how do I dump them from my home computer into the
DX7.
I copied some SYSEX dumps from MIDI:: into my VAX account.
I "kermited" them from my VAX account into my laptop (Toshiba1600)
I believe that I can "kermit" them from the laptop into the
AMIGA 500.
The AMIGA 500 is connected to the DX7 through a MIDI adapator connected
to the serial port. (I use the DR Ts sequencer).
QUESTION:
Is there a piece of software available that allows me to dump SYSEX
files from the AMIGA into the DX7 ???
Thanks and regards.

re: recovering all these sounds
I've never done this, so somebody better sanity check me...from
the instructions in the various subdirectories, the 1stread_me.txt
says to un-ARC the files once they have been loaded to your computer
(Atari in your case). I do not know how to do that, but I recall
reading about ARCing things in this notesfile (Do a
DIR/TITLE=ARC *.* or perhaps DIR/KEY=ARC
Getting the files to your Atari is a "personal thing" since everyone
uses their own file transfer program/protocol. Xmodem is mine, and
I use SMARTCOMM II, but I have a MAC. Kermit is the other big one.
This is a pretty well organized notesfile - use DIR/KEY alot since
the moderators have done alot of work getting things put into place
so everyone can find it fast! (HELP DIR... etc)

| 17.6 | some info... | MIDI::DAN | Dan Gosselin, CUP Engineering | Thu Jul 26 1990 08:19 | 25 |
re: .5 Getting the DX* patches is a 2-fold process. First, one must be able to download these patches to a home computer, and second, one must be able to make use of the .BLK format. For downloading on an Atari ST, if you've never done it before, I recommend that you read: PRNSYS::DUA2:[LOMICKAJ.HOBBY.ST]XFERINTRO.TXT It is an excellent intro to downloading to an Atari ST and also discusses different ARCing formats (to conserve space). For being able to use the .BLK files, you're in luck (by owning an ST!). Steph Bailey, who is frequently in this conference when not away at school, wrote BUMP (which is in MIDILIB) which is a desk accessory which allows one to do SYSEX bulkdumps back and forth between the Atari and a DX* series synth. One important thing to note is that BUMP (and its predecessor BULKDUMP) are *not* public domain - they are to be used by DEC employees only. If you have any other questions after reading Jeff Lomicka's XFERINTRO, feel free to contact me offline (by E-mail). -Dan (MIDI librarian) | |||||

| 17.8 | well, kind of | DYPSS1::SCHAFER | Brad - boycott hell. | Thu Jul 26 1990 08:53 | 16 |
RE: .-1
Bit of clarification: BUMP does not *require* a DX7, as I've used it to
capture several types of dumps. The U/I is a bit arcane, in that (if
you're not using preconfigured systems) you have to punch in the proper
SYSEX using your favorite editor.
Be that as it may, the DX/TX dumps are straight SYSEX dumps, and are
not limited to the BUMP dumper. In fact, if you have a SYSEX librarian
with your sequencer (or any SYSEX librarian, for that matter,
Atari-based or otherwise), you can load the dumps with no problem.
When you download them to your computer, make sure that you use the
equivalent of KERMIT SET FILE TYPE BINARY.

Thanks Brad, I didn't realize that this was the case. As a final clarification, though, it should be pointed out that the .BLK files in MIDILIB are meant to be used with Yamaha DX7, DX7II, TX7, and TX802 synths. -Dan | |||||
| 17.10 | BUMP is neat | NORGE::CHAD | Ich glaube Ich tte Ich htte | Thu Jul 26 1990 13:28 | 12 |
Actually, BUMP can be used with most devices without having to punch any sort of sysexe in. I've used it with D50 and K5. The proeconfigurations aren't usually necessary though I forget when they are to be used. The preconfigurations are only for going one of the two ways but I forget which way (synth--St or ST--synth). Suffice it to say I've never worried about them, (and what I just described about them may not be true). MOst SYSEXE dumps I've seen have their control info built into them anyway. Anyway, it is a handy tool. Don't worry about configuring BUMP unless you want to get adventurous. Chad | |||||
| 17.11 | new device for MIDILIB.... | MIDI::DAN | Dan Gosselin, CUP Engineering | Thu Sep 06 1990 12:59 | 17 |
I've joined the new MIDI (a VAXstation 3100) to a different cluster and the device has changed from MIDI$DUA1 to MIDI$DKA100. *But*, as a shortcut for everyone, a new system logical has been set up to keep things as simple as possible. Soooo, (to make a long story short) MIDILIB is now located at: MIDI::A$:[MIDILIB...] -Dan (your friendly MIDILIBrarian) PS. To whoever copied the MB*.ARC files to [MIDILIB.DEPOSIT] - could you also copy a version of the ARC.EXE that you're using to the same location? The version I have won't let me DE-ARC the files - the error I get is: "I don't know how to handle file MUSICBOX.TXT in archive MBDOC.ARC I think you need a newer version of ARC." Thanks! | |||||

With the addition of Tom Janzen's Amiga programs and his Beethoven
sequence to MIDILIB, I'm hoping that others will also be so kind to
share things that have been so near and dear to people's hearts
(after all, we're getting nearer to the Christmas season).
Feel free to contribute any *homemade* tool or sequence, or sequence
that does *not* violate any copyright laws (make sure it's in the
public domain). Please include a .txt file (or something similar)
which describes what you're contributing and how it can be run. Also,
if you're submitting a sequence, please make it one in 'Standard MIDI
file' format if possible.
Post things in:
MIDI::A$:[MIDILIB.DEPOSIT]
I'll move things to appropriate directories from there...
Thanks!
Dan

Hello Errol !
I have little problems to use the M1 programs on my M1.
I have RCM1S.PRG, RCM2S.PRG, RCM3S.PRG, XJOHNS.PRG and XKORG.PRG
but they are not executable on my ST.
What's wrong ?

These are bulk dumps of M1 programs. Your M1 should be configure for
100 programs as these banks each hold 100 patches.
These are not executable programs, you need a bulk dump program on
your ST to get them to the M1.
If you have any further question send me mail @ NWACES::PHILLIPS.

Note 2645.0 location of MIDI (.MID) files ? No replies
SNOC02::LANG 21 lines 22-MAY-1991 08:22
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I am a new MIDI user, with a Sound Blaster card on my IBM PC ( a real
DEC PC at that). I have Sequencer Plus form Voyetra ( its terrific and
works even for musical dummies like me).
I have a Korg Electric Piano and a Yamaha MIDI synth with everything
working .
I am looking for a bunch of MIDI files (*.MID) to drive all this gera
crazy ( and my family).
I looked in MIDI::a$:[midilib.deposit] and behold...no files in
there...
Gasp so close ...
Can anyone point me to a more exact location that even a sales rep
could copy using COPY commnad on a VAX.
Ta

I own an IBM clone and I have been using GETIT. Maybe someone with
an ATARI ST can point you to bulk dump program for that machine.
Can someone using an ST get in here and help out?

I'm having problems with the musicbox files from the IBM_pc
area in the Midi lib. All the (arc) are failing CRC checks and thus
the resultant files are faulty. I've copied the files over twice
just in case there was a problem with my original copy but the result
was the same. Has anyone out there had any success using this
software !. If so, could someone let me have a working copy and
any examples to try out.
Any help apreciated.
Steve.

| 17.27 | Problem-MIDILIB download to Mac | NZOMIS::WOOLSTON | Mon Aug 26 1991 21:40 | 23 | |
Hi all! I'm a new kid on the block - Peter Woolston, hailing from New
Zealand. I've been at DIGITAL a grand total of 3 weeks and have
frequented this conference a great deal already!!! I'm reachable at
NZOMIS::WOOLSTON.
PROBLEM:
Have downloaded some patches to my now very full account, but am having
trouble getting them any further. I can get to them using MacTerminal
and have tried using XMODEM to no intelligable avail(Mac connected to
the LAN does have PATHWORKS). So.....
How do I get the files to the Mac in the right format from the VAX
using XMODEM?
Am I using the correct tools?
I'm talking about some real in-depth, holding-my-hand help here...
Any takers????????
Thanks in advance.
Peter.

I believe the MACONLINE conference (on ROUTES::) has lots of good information about downloading files from VAX to Mac. Bottom line is XMODEM and LATs don't play together very well. Use ZMODEM - it's faster than XMODEM and it works with LATs. If your terminal emulator on the Mac doesn't support ZMODEM transfers, pick up a copy of ZTERM (shareware) from the ROUTES mac library. You also need the sz/rz utilities on the VMS end, also available on ROUTES. Jim Hit KP7 for ROUTES::MACONLINE... | |||||

Robo Bop is a shareware drum sequencing program that runs on Atari ST
computers in medium or high resolution. It emulates the Roland "grid"
programming interface, but adds extensions like velocity mapping and
volume mixing. Default map templates for the Roland drum map and the
Sequenctial Circuits Drumtraks are provided. The program is mouse

I downloaded a pair of DOS-based utilities from USENET. They can be
found in [MIDILIB.TOOLS.IBM.SMTOOLS]. There are archived as a ZIP
file, SMTOOL.ZIP. The following is the supplied docs:
Here's a couple of simple MIDI tools (for DOS) I find useful around
my studio:
PCH - program changer. Allows programs changes to be sent
from the MS-DOS command line (or batch files). Useful for
setups, testing, etc.
MDISP - Midi 'display' (emit). Idea taken from an old OS9
utility. Allows the transmission of raw data bytes in hex
or in decimal out of the MIDI interface. Great for testing,
sending unusual sequences, seeing if certain data is getting
filtered, keeping a note on without having to hold a key
down, etc.

| 17.35 | Roland Sampler Disk Utility (for DOS) | RGB::ROST | In search of Richard Sinclair | Fri Jan 03 1992 16:11 | 21 |
I have uploaded a tool for DOS machines which lets you manipulate
Roland S-series sample disks on the PC. You can find it in
[midilib.tools.ibm.samdisk]. You'll need to UNZIP the file.
Brian
From the author:
This is a tool for owners of Roland S330, S50, and S550 samplers that
I whipped up over the holidays. It allows reading the sampler disks
into dos files (and the reverse), listing patch and tone contents,
duplicator mode, and also a binary record writing mode for use with
your own data manipulation routines.
Now we can exchange sampler DISKS over traditional telecommunications
media!
Enjoy...

If I might speak for MIDI Dan ... MIDI:: is a standalone VAXstation
3100/m38 with modest memory, modest disk, and lots of other work going
on within the system. It lives in ZK (Spitbrook Rd., New Hampshire)
which means it's in EST/EDT, depending on the time of year.
I would have kept it down here in Dayton, OH had the former DYO780 not
been removed from the net ... I suppose that MIDI:: is easier to
remember than DYO, but I digress.

Advice from Paul.. I have a MAC on the net in TUO, and a MAC at home..
How to pull a standard MIDI file and place on a networked MAC.
From: KOBAL::DICKSON "07-Feb-1992 1332" 7-FEB-1992 11:35:36.69
To: SALSA::MOELLER
Subj: All the classical stuff is in MIDILIB already.
Try this. On your VAX, copy the file:
MIDI::A$:[MIDILIB.SEQUENCES.CLASSICAL]YOURTITLE.SMF *.*
It is a binary midi file, so that people with other-than-mac
sequencers can use it.
Once you have it on a VMS disk near you, (on advice from my Pathworks
contact, I placed the file in [PCCOMMON]) go to your Mac and fire
up NetCopy. Before you transfer, go into the "Parameters..." item
on the Characteristics menu and set the "File type" for "Image"
transfers to "Midi". Spelled just like that, with capital M and
lower case idi. This way when the file appears on the Mac it will
have a file type that your MIDI-function should understand. Image
file "Creator" is not so important, but if you want to be snazzy,
set it to "MOUP". That will make the appropriate icon show up so
it will look like Performer owns it. Select "Image" on the
Characteristics menu, and transfer the file to the Mac.
************
As my MAC uses an 800K floppy, I had to use an unitialized floppy in
the 1.4MB diskette drive on the IIci. Performer imported the file
perfectly. karl

| 17.46 | COPY may not be the best thing to use | BSS::STPALY::MOLLER | Fix it before it breaks | Wed Feb 12 1992 17:01 | 16 |
By the way, when you are coping files accross the network that
are binary and were not created using VMS, don't use VMS copy,
as you might get a corrupt file, or you might get errors during
the transfer. Instead set the following symbol up:
PCOPY == "exchange/network/trans=block"
And use PCOPY in place of COPY. Sometimes the file is corrupted
when using regular copy, and you won't find out until the time
comes that you try to use it for something & then it won't
UNARC or UNZIP or be readable byt your program, or it won't run
in general. Some files work fine after a VMS COPY accross the
network, some don't - save your self some aggrivation.

Just so everyone knows, I'm not trying to be unreasonable by only allowing copying between 7PM and 7AM. The way I look at it is this - 99% of the time people will be copying things from there for non-work related (read: PLAY) activities. I do have work to do and I need to get it done during normal work activities. (As Bookreader Project Leader, I'm constantly doing builds and doing lots of debugging.) As has been suggested, if others want it moved to a bigger system, hey, feel free to do so. If people (like Karl) are having problems accessing MIDILIB during the allowed hours I'm not sure what to say. Every test I've done (doing directories and copies) from accounts on systems here at ZKO works fine for me. Has anyone *successfully* copied anything recently from MIDILIB? Has anyone else been having problems? -Dan | |||||

BTW, I don't know how well this works, (relative to COPY and EXCHANGE), but one could also use FTSV, AKA SPOOL. I believe spool has an option to start the copy after a certain time. It definitely can send mail to anyone you like when the copy is complete (or has failed). And best of all, if the network goes down in the middle of a copy, SPOOL keeps trying and picks up where it left off. I suspect that the receiving node has to be VMS (as MIDI apparently is), though I don't know for sure. Burns | |||||

I used SPOOL copy as well as several DCL copy attempts. I wasn't
pointing fingers, just stating that login access failed in a legal time
frame. No complaints about the host, either.. ;-)
I'll try again.. wonder if exchange/network runs under SPOOL/FTSV?
