We're coming to Canada in a month or so and want to hire a car for
about three weeks - pick-up in Vancouver, drop-off at Calgary (taking a
    side trip to Seattle.

The question is simple - what's the best deal I can get for a good
vehicle (in the case of Hertz/Avis I'd be looking at Group D - Full
    size 2 door).

In Europe Digital staff get fantastic deals but the rates Hertz/Avis
have quoted have been pretty expensive (around $1300 CDN plus 6% tax
for three weeks with 4200Km free then 18c per Km).

I'd appreciate advice on whether I can do better, from a reliable
source that I can book by phone or fax from the UK.

| Avis Rates in Canada for Digital employeese which do not include LDW ...
These rates are for same city return rentals ...

                A - Subcompact $30.00 $150.00
                B - Compact $31.00 $155.00
                C - Intermediate $32.00 $160.00
                D - Full Size (2-door) $34.00 $170.00
                E - Full Size (4-door) $35.00 $175.00
                F - Wagon (6 Passenger) $40.00 $200.00
                G - Premium $50.00 $250.00

Special return rates between selected locations are available ...
BUT Vancouver to Calgary is not amongst them

General different city return rates are the standard daily rates
which would typically include about 200 km free per day less 25%
discount plus the standard one way service fee.

No one is likely to do better because of the one way charges which will
swamp the actual rental charge. You might want to consider returning
the car to Vancouver and taking the Bus or Train to Calgary ... it
    would probably be much cheaper.

A full size 2 door car is generally a LARGE car --
