    You will find plenty to do in Montreal, there are other notes in this
    conference about restaurants, even music clubs.
    
    Montreal has no public holiday in August, and no major festivals that
    I know of (many montealais attempt to escape to the cottage in August).
    
    Consider side trips (one day each) to Ottawa and Quebec city...

    There is a major hot air balloon festival in mid-August, just 30 - 40
    minutes south of Montreal in a little town called
    Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu.  In addition to morning and evening balloon
    launches, they usually have cultural displays and concerts, often
    featuring top Quebec entertainers.

    If you're interested in doing the STS (Standard Tourist's Schtick)
    there's lots of possibilities, here are a few:
    
    	The Canadian Centre for Architecture (Museum)
    	Le Musee de Beaux Arts (Museum)
    	Botanical Gardens
    	Insectivarium (Insect zoo, part of the Botanical Gardens)
    	Jet boat rides through the St. Lawrence Rapids
    	Le Ronde (amusement park)
    	
    	
    You'll find very little trouble getting along without French but do
    yourself a favour and try to learn and use a little, it makes the
    experience more fun. Be sure to set aside a sunny afternoon for the old
    city and plan to stay out late.
    	

    
    Montreal is a fascinating, multi-cultural and very cosmopalitan city.
    If you get a chance you should see old-Montreal (down by the river).
    Mount-Royal is a "tourist" must see spot. It is in the heart of the
    city and one can drive or walk up to see the most spectacular view
    of Montreal. For night life you can check the bars on St. Denis st.
    between Sherbrooke and Dorchester, (french part of town). To go out
    on the town in the english part of town try Bishop or Crescent streets
    between deMaisoneuve and Dorchester. (Sorry, I just remembered that
    Dorchester is now called Rene Levesque Blvd.) Also, you can check out
    the Olympic facilities. The Olympic Stadium has a huge tower the you 
    can go up for another incredible view of the city from the east. Well,
    that`s about it for me. Enjoy your stay in Montreal.

How about the newly opened Biodome in the Olympic stadium.  It's located in the
old Velodrome.  I heard it's worth the visit.

    No, no, Ted.  You can't go home.  You made your choice and now you'll
    just have to live with it.  BTW, Sean's going to McGill in the Fall, so
    I'll be sure to shower you with tantilizing tid-bits, just to make you

    This year is our (Montr�al's) 350th anniversary.  There will be
    plenty of special events throughout the summer.  Make sure you get
    an official program guide when you get to Montr�al.  The 
    events were kicked off this past weekend with a night parade 
    which attracted .5 million people and a fireworks show that started
    at midnight and finished 45 minutes later.
    
    This is DEFINITELY THE SUMMER to come to Montr�al... just make sure
    you book your hotel well in advance.
    
    Many of the special events will be held at the Old Port, but you'll
    find Montr�alers in a festive mood just about everywhere around the
    City Centre.

    I will be in the Old Port this weekend with friends visiting from 
    Boston.  I'll look around for you and see what is available.  I know
    they launched a book in the spring with local Montr�al artists and
    writers... I'll see what that's about...
    
    How about a program guide?  If there is one, do you want one?  They
    will probably be free and I can mail it to you at your home.  Let

    expense. If you see anything else could you make a note  of what they
    are about and the prices, please? No point mailing anything here
    because there is a mail strike. It's been going on for 3 weeks and

    that Sean picked McGill hope his French is up to scratch and that he

    His French is fluent, he's been in the immersion program since Grade 3. 
    But I doubt there'll be much demand to use it at McGill.  He's
    certainly smitten with Montr�al, almost as much as I am with Dublin
    (blemishes and all).

	I figured that this would be an appropriate note to enter
	this since I'll be making a trip, along with three others
	to Montreal during the weekend of Aug. 14-17.  We already
	have accomidations at the Journey End in Dorval, but I have
	a question on that:

	Is there METRO in the area of Dorval, and if not where would
	be the closest METRO I can drive to and park there to use
	the METRO / How late does the METRO run till at night ???

	We would be looking into clubs that have ROCK&ROLL, can anyone
	recommend any clubs/addresses ???  Last time I was in Montreal
	we went to this place called WOODY'S, this was about three years
	ago.  Is it still there ???

	Any help would be GREATLY appreciated !!!

    Hi,
    
    	No M�tro close to Dorval, but you cam drive to D�carie and go
    NORTH, you will either find the NAMUR or C�TE VERTU stations, park on
    the street (observe the sings or make sure it's not a tow away zone if
    you don't expect to pay the fine).  The m�tro runs to about 12am. 
    Sorry I don't know about clubs but I'm sure you will have a good time
    anyway.

    	into Montreal on Rt. 10.  Can anyone post in here how to get from
    	Rt. 10 to the Journey's End Motel in Dorval ???  It would be a

      Can anyone recommend a nice motel in the Hemmingford Area? We
    just need it for one night so it doesn't have to be too fancy.
    Preferably something fairly cheap but clean also.

    	This is the weekend that we'll be heading to Montreal.  We
    	leave tomorrow morning and will arrive mid-afternoon.  A
    	friend of mine is having trouble accessing weather reports
    	for the Montreal area via the Usenet.
    
    	Can anyone please give me the weekends weather report for
    	Montreal and surrounding cities/towns ???  We will be there

    The most accurate weather report lately is to look out the window.
    
    But seriously, all this summer, forecasts have changed on a half
    daily basis and they still have often been wrong.  Like within the
    last week, the forecast said "Sunny this afternoon" ... this was at
    2pm and was tipping with rain.  "Daytime high of 27-29"  ... barely
    reached 22.
    
    Anyway, forecasts are usually issued for the next three days ... so
    forecasts now are up until Saturday ... only one local TV station
    gives a 5 day forecast ... and by day 5 the forecast is generally
    "Cloudy with Sunny periods" or "Sunny with cloudy periods".  Totally
    non-committal.
