| | The Blue Jays are a good team but they always choke during the
latter part of the season. It seems like they just don't have
enough to finish off their opponents. I would like to see them
win at least once in the near future. I am a die hard Red Sox
fan having lived in Massachusetts all my life, so I hope
the Sox's catch up this year and crush the Blue Jay's hopes.
Maybe someday when the Sox are in last place and not even in
contention then the Jays will win the pennant and the World
Series. Then again, talk about hard luck, I wish the
Red Sox's would win the World Series.

the better part of a century without winning the World Series to
declare that an expansion team of 15 years 'always chokes'.

Well, let's see now. Monday morning, Jays just swept the hapless
Indians this weekend. In fact, I think we went 12-1 on the season with
    Cleveland.

And oh yeah, 5-1/2 up on the Red Saps and 6 up on Detrotch, with a few
    weeks left in the season.

    Pack it in Boston fans...

That's correct: no. The Tigers were briefly tied for first, but never
alone in first. Please note the gap between Detroit and Toronto now.
Then, as now, having the second place team closing the gap is
unimportant. The Jays have won when they had to win, and the Red Sox
can not continue to play .800 ball.

the Red Sux are 'only one game out in the loss column'.

Come on guys, a spade is a spade, they're 1-1/2 games out. Just
because they have played less games doesn't mean you can automatically
count that as an extra win.

At this point, it will not be decided until the last weekend of the

| | The Blue Jays have clinched at least a tie with the Red Sox, as the
magic number drops to one. To tie, the Jays would have to go 0-4,
    while the Sox go 5-0.

Toronto beat California behind yet another tremendous outing by Juan
Guzman. Guzman (10-2) has now won 10 consecutive decisions as a
starter, breaking the team record of 9 held by Dave Stieb. Boston lost
8-5 to the Tigers, but needed 3 runs in the bottom of the ninth to make
it that close. Clemens took the loss, proving that even he is human in
    September.

The four millionth fan will arrive at the SkyDome tonight, to watch Tom
Candiotti (13-13) try to clinch the Jays' third division win in six
years. The previous attendance record, set last year, was broken on
    Monday.

attendance should automatically be contending - if they aren't,
    they are misusing their funds!!!

But this doesn't make them world champions - wealth alone can't create
a dynasty. They need experience as well as ability. They need
    traditions as well as $$$.

I was in T.O. when they were awarded their franchise. The city went
nuts for a while. I (being an Expos fan) resent the self-assumed title
of Canada's national team. Further I made a prediction then, and I
stand by it (even in these tough times for the expos):

The Blue Jays *may* reach the World Series before the Expos, but
will not win it before the Expos.

Part of my prediction stems from the above comments concerning
tradition and experience. Cash can buy a lot in baseball (witness
the Yankees of the mid 80's) but it can't buy a world series.

| 472.39 | Baseball subsidies...not unique to Canada | TROOA::SOLEY | I will not belch the national anthem | Fri Oct 04 1991 09:52 | 26 |
| | It's not quite as simple as all that. On paper at least Skydome is
breaking even, in fact, discounting interest payments it makes a tidy
profit. The only problem is that the stadium corporation has $350M in
loans outstanding, just paying the interest on the loans eats away all
of that lovely profit. Now the provincial government has guarenteed those
loans, this means that if any of the loans were called and the stadium
corporation couldn't pay the government would have to. Things could go
along like this for a long time, as long as the stadium corp keeps
making it's interest payments it's unlikely anyone will call the loans,
but someday, maybe sooner than later we'll be left holding the bag. So
for the time being at least you're not subsidizing the Jays.

I got a kick out of the recent press coverage of the 1 year anniversary
of Toronto losing the Olympic bid to Atlanta, seems nobody who's
whining about this has noticed that the people who were involved in the
Olympic and Expo bids (absolutely, positively guarenteed to make gobs
of money they tell us) are in large part the same people who
absolutely, positively guarenteed that the Skydome would make gobs of
    money.....

Baseball subsidies are not a uniquely Canadian thing, Spy magazine had
an article about a year ago which detailed the subsidies teams recieve
in the form of very cheap rent for publicly financed stadia, I seem to
remember that there is at least one team that only pays $1 a year to
    play in the municipal stadium.

| | I'm from Montreal too and I hope that the Blue Jays win the Series
before the Expos. If they don't, Canada will have to wait an awful long
time for the Expos to do it. Heck! by then they may not even be in
    Canada anymore.

show up Montreal fans for being what we really are. Philadelphia

Congrats to Blue Jays - a real class act. Really cool the way the
players came out of the dugout and waved to the crowd. Strangely
enough, the same night was "Fan Appreciation" night down here at
Fenway. The players did not come out to acknowledge the fans, and
probably would have given us the finger anyway....

    Good luck,

| | Remember the line in Monty Python's Holy Grail, where the father of the
bride said to the folks assembled at his daughter's wedding reception,
after Lancelot had (mistakenly) slain most of the wedding party (and
punched the mother of the bride in the face) in a vain attempt to
rescue the groom from the occasion:

"...now, now, these are happy times, let's not dwell on these
unfortunate happenings..." (or something like that).

In other words, if I had intended to start a Montreal Choke-spos note,
I would have! This note is strictly reserved for discussions of the
    Jays.

Look's like Cito has set the starting rotation for this weekend's
series with Minnesota, but has said nothing yet about the ALCS. I also
noticed that Las Vegas was favoring (heavily I think) the Twins over
the Jays in the Series, citing home field advantage at the Hubert-dome
    as a major differentiator.

    Thoughts lads?

the Jays winning the World Series, using the fans as the wedding
