Of course, the brilliance of the fall colors depends a lot on the weather; 
mild sunny days followed by cool (even frosty) nights is usually the best 
combination for brilliant colors.  So an area that gave you good colors 
last year may produce a poor show this year.

Having said that, the areas where I've found the best colors over the past 
few years are:

o	the Kortright Conservation area (about � hour north of TO, for 
	those who don't know!);

o	the Glen Haffey Conservation area, about 45 minutes north of 
	Toronto on Airport Road -- this is quite a hilly area and the views 
	from some vantage points are incredible;

o	the Barrie area -- I particularly enjoy Bass Lake, a few minutes 
	west of Orillia;

o	Algonquin Provincial Park -- saw the most breathtaking display up 
	there 3 years ago; and

o	Aleghenny (sp?) Park, on the border of New York and Pennsylvania 
	(OK, I know this doesn't really belong in the Canada conference, 
	but you can easily make a day's trip of it from TO) -- being quite 
	a bit further south, the best displays are later than in TO by a 
	week or two.

As you say, though, it is sad to see the ruin caused by acid rain.  I'm 
sure the colors aren't as brilliant as they were when we came over from 
England in 1984; or is it just that I'm more used to the spectacle now?

If you're planning to tour the fall colors in Ontario this year, there are 
a couple of phone numbers that you will find useful.

The first number is (416) 963-2992.  This connects you to a recorded 
message regarding the fall color conditions right across Ontario, from 
North Bay down to Windsor.  I have just called this number and they say 
that there is little change in color yet, even up in the far north.  The 
first noticeable change is at least a week away, even later in areas 
further south.  The message is updated on Monday and Thursday each week, so 
it is always up to date.

The second number is 1-800 ONTARIO.  This connects you to the Ontario 
Ministry of Tourism and Recreation where you can ask for literature about 
the fall colors.  The best publication is the Fall Auto Tours booklet, 
which lists many drives you can take to see the best fall colors.  There is 
no charge for the booklet, and they will also send you any other booklets 
that you want, plus maps, etc.

Finally, if you want to pick up literature for yourself, there are several 
tourism centers dotted about Ontario.  Ones that come to mind are in 
Niagara Falls (about 1 mile from the Falls themselves), St. Catharines (on 
the QEW, between the 405 exit and the St. Catharines bridge), Barrie (on 
the 400 just north of the Essa Road exit), and Toronto (in the Eaton 
Center).

    We have amazing autumn colors here in the PNW - green. But then spring
    is green, as are summer and winter.
    
    The fall color change is something we just don't see here.

	Yes I know what you mean. My parents retired out there on the
	island a few years ago from Montreal. My Dad complains that
	he misses the fall colors most of all.

	It seems that if I visit in the winter, things are _very_ green
	and in the summer they are only just green...almost brown.

	Oh well...not everyone can live in Gods country (I won't say
	whether that statement refers to you out there or us back
	here ;-)

    'Com on now....ayuhh...can't top a New England Autumn!  
    
    Dip down into New England.  Specifically, New Hampshire.  Peak
    time is early October for the North Country (not too far Sherbrook,
    Quebec).  Mid-October for the White Mountain region and
    late October for Southern NH - Monadnock Region.      
    
    In addition, this is the time of year New Hampshire and the rest
    of New England have annual autumn fairs.  
    
    I've seen many cars from Quebec and Ontario down in NH over the
    years each fall.......this year experts are predicting a spectacular
    fall color due to the large rains this year.  Acid rain is a major
    problem...not only for fall colors but drinking water...what can
    the Canadian gov't do to help with the situation here in NH.  There
    is a direct link between acid rain in New England and the plants
    in Canada.
    
    Bring plenty of money...we have a war to fund!

    Not to mention that acid rain emanates not only from Canada, but from
    the USA as well ... our forests and probably your own too are being
    destroyed by acid rain that comes from south west of us ... which
    points to parts of Pennsylvania and Ohio and ......
    
    So don't point the finger at us alone please ... when you are
    definitely doing something about your own house then you can point
    at ours.  Sure, undoubtedly we are all guilty ... but pointing fingers
    ain't going to fix the problem ... let's all work at cleaning up our
    own back yard.
