    Shouldn't this be called the Exxon/Valdez budget?
    
    Poorly managed, leaking profusely, causing extreme damage to those
    unable to protect themselves and the general public will have to
    pick up the pieces (and foot the bill)...

    I don't think Wilson will resign.  I remember back about five or
    six years ago when the then Liberal Finance Minister, Marc Lalonde,
    was flipping through the budget in front of a television camera.
    The picture clearly showed the print, allowing the network to extract
    virtually all the budget details.  Rather than present a budget
    that had been disclosed early, Lalonde arbitrarily added an extra
    $200 million to the budget to change the bottom line.  In this case,
    Wilson tried to do the right thing by recalling the House and
    presenting the budget immediately.  The Liberals, and especially
    the New Democrats, were quick to say no and call for his resignation.
    
    Once details of the budget were released, the government has an
    obligation to present in immediately.  I am disappointed that the
    opposition parties have decided that political gamesmanship is
    preferred to maintaining the integrity of the budget process.

     One of the terrible things about the budget is that it is a game
    of semantics.
     First, the idea that cutting the nuclear submarine program and
    daycare subsidies will save money is silly. How can you save money
    that you are not spending? When they say they will save 4 or 5 billion,
    well, if you take the above into account, it's only going to be
    1 to 1.5 billion.
     Second, next week, all the members of parliment will be patting
    themselves on the back for a job well done and some private members
    bill will be brought forward that proposes a raise for everyone
    and what do you think will happen? Well, we saved some money, now
    let's take a reward.

    another terrible thing is the closing of CFB Summerside. PEI will
    be devestated. I can accept (sort of) closing CFB Portage La Prairie,
    Home of No. 2 Flight Training School (Primary) for our pilots, that
    at least could be integrated into CFB Moosejaw.
    
    But PEI ! So very, very poorly thought out ...
    
    I, for one, wouldn't bitch too much about paying even MORE in taxes
    to support our military ...

    Acutally, the 'cuts' to submarines and day-care are cuts in the
    sense that these dollars had been previously budgeted.  Without
    the cuts, the deficit would have been 36 billion.  So the cancelation
    of programs not yet started is as much of a cut as if these programs
    had started.  But not starting to spend is easier that to stop current
    spending.

    Much of the unexpected increase is from rising interest rates, thus
    indicating a legitimate need to reduce the deficit. 
    
    Also, about the CFB in PEI; isn't Summerside the only Search and
    Rescue centre on the east coast?  Or is that maintained separately
    from the base?

    the SAR duties currently running from Summerside could, in theory
    and practice, be moved to CFB Greenwood, CFB Shearwater ( both in
    N.S.) ... the coordination has always been out of CFB Halifax.
