    Regarding your Toshiba TV, I have one also and there is a large
    repair centre in Toronto. In fact I still have in home warranty
    on my tv and a technician was sent fairly quickly to make a repair.

    Hi from Holland...
    While the subject is about electrical applicances, I want to add
    my query and maybe, just maybe, someone in the "know" can fill me
    in.
    I will be on vacation in Toronto ( Irish circle's ) and I am interested
    in buying a Waterbed, someone told me recently that I could buy a waterbed
    and bring it back to Holland and have a simple upgrade on the
    electrics. Is it so easy ? do I just stick it in a suitcase ?.
    
    Also.. is it possible to visit DEC plants in Canada, say, Kanata,Missauga,
    or downtown Toronto ?.

    Our only plant is in Kanata.  And in Metro Toronto, we have two
    offices: TRC (505 University Avenue, approx. University and Dundas),
    and TRO (4110 Yonge St., approx. Yonge and York Mills).

    I was once in a digital office in Rexdale?!? next to Mother Tuckers
    and not far from the Airport. This was to drop off a CV of a guy
    who was emigrating from Scotland to Canada. He didn't get a job
    there, but is now doing ok as far as I know.
    
    What's the present climate for Canadian immigration? I hear that
    Mulroney is about to introduce some austerity measures (as well
    as buying some nuclear powered hunter-killer submarines) which,
    I presume, will impact current quotas.

    The office next to the Mother Tuckers WAS the old TRO office.  
    
    As it was mentioned a couple of entries back, the NEW TRO office

    I had read somewhere that DEC have a records/documentation facility
    in Missasauga. I have worked with documentation and was interested
    hence my question. But, if you say its not there.....
    
    Do you have any info on how I could visit the Kanata Plant ? a contact or

    I processed my application for residency last year and had no problem.
    Next Sunday (April 30th) I arrive in Toronto and will get my Passport 
    stamped as a legal Immegrant ( unusual for an Irishman ). I have no plans
    to stay in Canada at the moment, so my exercise next Sunday is to
    ensure that the door is left open for a couple of years down the
    road.

		I'm an instructor within the Kanata Manufacturing facility and

	here.  We're situated outside of Ottawa about 400Km east of Toronto.
	To drive here would take about 5 hours, flying time is about 1.25hours.

    Actually, John, there is a data protection facility (location
    code TRT) in Mississauga.  But if you surveyed the DEC employees
    in TRC and TRO, about 99% wouldn't know what it was.

    Does anybody have any information on the schedule or program for

    Is there any good Music gigs,concerts on at that time? is there
    a sort of "in Toronto" magazine that one can pick up and see
    whats happening.
    
    We are looking for good pubs,bars,Guiness etc etc with Music..Blues etc
    etc. Are these to be found in any specific area of Toronto????

    Everything is available in the Toronto area.  There is a magazine
    called 'Now'.  It's free, and can be picked up in most record stores
    or pubs.  Albert's Hall is good for blues.

    Albert's Hall is good for big name blues artists. But check out
    Grossman's on Spadina, just north of Dundas for some local talent.
    NOW is the best best for all the 'alternative' happenings in Toronto.

    In Ontario licenced premises close the bar at 1am.  I'm not sure
    at what time they reopen.
    
    As for being cold in April, that's a nasty rumour put out by people
    who live in the tropics.  Really, what do you mean by cold?  The
    average temperature last month in Ottawa was about -5C, quite mild
    in fact.                     
    
    I believe that the normal for Toronto in April is around 10C (50F).
    Anyone got a better estimate?

      In April the weather can be quite pleasant in Toronto. It's not that
    unusual for it to reach +15�C on a sunny day. Those are the days when
    you want to take time out for a stroll along the Grand Canal.

	If you're going to be in the downtown area, you could try the
'Whispering Oyster', 'Amsterdam', and for a real treat try 'Sparkles' 
which is a pub about 350 m above Toronto (in the CN Tower).  Since I'm
not from Toronto, maybe the locals could provide more info on the 'good'
pubs.

	By the way, the beer here is generally better than the swill that
is flogged south of the border but what is truly much better is the product
sold by 'microbreweries'.  These independent breweries sell such brands
as 'Upper Canada Ale' and 'Ottawa Valley Ale', there are many more and
the 'good' pubs should have them.

    Mick, if you want the Irish sort of pub flavour (I was in
    Shannon/Doolan/Galway last year) then you should check out 'The
    Unicorn' pub on Eglinton Ave., 'The Sticky Wicket' on Spadina/Bloor
    The best nights for bars/pubs etc. in TO are typcially from Thrus-Sat.

    Not compared to what I had when I was in Cork last year.  I
    don't think that the Guiness travels well, so they boil the piss
    out of it, add carbonation and flog it at outrageous prices.  A pint
    of Guiness in Skibbereen cost me IR�1 (about CA$2), in Canada it'll
    cost you CA$5.

    	The Grand Canal Pub, located at the Grand Canal and the Don Valley
    Aqueduct. Park your car and ride the gondola!

    ...and then there are the Grand Canal Car Canoes - you park your car on
    the Grand Canoe, they attach the paddles to each of your exterior
    mirrors, then you paddle by moving the little mirror adjustment
    thingies. If you don't have electric mirrors, you need a passenger in
    the the right seat. If you don't have a passenger or a right hand
    exterior mirror, then you can at least do the Lake Ontario tour by
    paddling on one side only.
    
    If you don't have mirrors adjustable from the inside, the best you can
    do is the Grand Canal Grand Rapids Car Wash tour, located in Canada's
    Wonderland. No need for control, just park, wind up your windows and
    careen away.

	Alternately, one could take the TTC (Terrible Toronto Customs) subway
	(underground or tube to you Brits) to the Castlefrank station, have
	one of their famous crenellated hot dogs, then rappel down the Prince
	of Whales Viaduct to the aforementioned Grand Canal Pub on the shores
	of the mighty Don River.

	Taking the subway is a particular treat as this is the world's only
	transportation system consisting entirely of remanufactured ski-doos,
	linked together to form trains.  Bombardier manufactures this system
	and has recently bought the Shorts Aircraft company in Belfast where
	they intend to apply the same principals to aeroplanes.

    The 'law' is that with a level of .80 on the breathliser you could
    lose your licence, pay a fine, AND go to jail.
    
    Wuth a reading of .50 your licence can be taken away on the spot.
    Your car will stay where it is and, unless you have someone else 
    to drive it, could be towed, and on top of this you will have to 
    make your own way home.
    
    Many bars now serve free non-alcoholic drinks for the designated
    driver in the party.  So each time you go out take turns as to who
    will drink and who wont.
    
    The general rule is if you drink don't drive.
    
    Have a fun time.

    I plan on going to the Hockey Hall of Fame some time soon. I also want
    to play some golf while I'm up there. So, any general information on
    the Hall and places to play golf in the area would be appreciated.

Hockey Hall of Fame

	The shrine of the unofficial national sport of Canada offers
photographs, trophies, movies, artefacts, sticks, goalie masks and
histories of the game, the teams and the stars.  But you have to be a
fan or someone with real curiosity about the sport to get the most out
of the exhibits.  Canada's Sports Hall of Fame is in the same building 
and offers a look at a broader range of activities.

	Open: summer, 10:00 to 17:00 daily (during the Canadian National
	      Exhibition open hours are extended to 20:00).
	      winter, 10:00 to 16:30.

Golf

	Sorry, I can't give you much on this subject; however, a must-do
would be the Glen Abbey golf course near Oakville.  It is the site of the
Canadian Open.  There are about 20 other courses within easy reach of
downtown Toronto.

    I heard a story on the radio the other day about two men who have
    created an ornithopter that will replicated the mechanics of a bird's
    flight.  One of them was a Professor John Delorey [sp?] of Toronto
    University.  Did anybody see a newspaper report of this?  I would like
    to try and contact this person, but am not sure of the spelling of his
    name.  Cam any body in Toronto help me out?  If I can determine how to
    spell the last name, perhaps I can try sending him MAIL over the net.

    This vehicle is about the size of a remote-controlled model airplane. 
    It was not developed for use as a passenger-carrying vehicle.
    
    This development project was to establish the feasibility of a
    mechanical, 'flapping-wings', flying machine with no future use in
    mind.
    
    So, I wouldn't get into a big flap over it although it might be
    something to squawk about.
    
    Plans are now to have a large fleet of these devices manufactured in
    areas of low employment to boost the economy, and then to set the
    vehicles loose on pre-programmed migratory flight paths.

    That could be it also.  I tried sending email to postmaster at the

    We haven't had any more snow since the storm last Friday.  In fact, it
    has been fairly mild here for the last week.  It's supposed to turn
    cooler over the weekend, but I haven't heard that we should be
    expecting any significant accumulation of snow.  Driving to Orillia on
    Monday shouldn't be a problem.
