    Does anyone have any experience using the Transamerica Card? 
    
    As Boston Globe subscribers, we received a promotional offer for this 
    card, which claims to give you a 20% discount on food/drink at a number 
    of area restraunts. The premise is that you would present this card to the
    waitstaff in lieu of a credit card, and that they would process it
    just like a credit card. The charges would automatically be booked to your 
    charge account of choice (Visa, MC, Amex). Then, when you received your 
    monthly statement, you would see two line items: one listing the
    initial charge, and one reflecting a corresponding 20% discount.
    
    Supposedly the card is provided at no cost to the user; the only
    stipulation is that you must charge at least $100/year; otherwise, the
    account is cancelled without penalty.
    
    Sounds a lot less cumbersome that using some sort of secondary discount
    card, and having the waitstaff calculate the appropriate discount;
    however, I'm a bit reluctant to give some unknown company the right to
    book charges & credits directly to my charge account.
    
    Has anyone else used this service? Comments or experiences?

We use it and are satisfied with it. There's quite a variety of
restaurants that offer the use of the Transamerica card, which is
nice...certainly more than the Entertainment Book (which is what
we've always used). We figure, on average, it saves us the tip
amount, effectively.

    We have a *Transmedia* card which has exactly the same terms but
    the charge and discount comes off your Master Card bill.  It's great
    - lots of excellent restaurants are offered.

A friend of mine has it and uses it all the time - it works just as
advertised.  I've just applied for mine.  Also, it pays to ask a restaurant
if they accept it - some new restaurants, that haven't yet appeared in the
list, do take it.

I now see a "prime card Visa"  that offers many discounts too.

I've got both Transmedia and Primecard, and while I don't use them too
often (there's not much desirable in Nashua, but see below), they mostly
seem to work.  I prefer Transmedia for those places that take both, since
Primecard seems to take forever to credit the rebates.  Certainly, when I
go in to Boston, I skim the books to see if there's somewhere nearby/worthwhile
that takes it.

But I see in the latest Transmedia update that the NH locations of Foodee's
now take it!  This definitely means I'll be using it more often...
