9223.0. "can't mount cdfs cdrom" by MUNICH::CUZUM () Wed Mar 19 1997 08:15

Hi folks,

I have a customer, who  can't mount an CDFS-CDROM (not a DEC CD !). He
permanently gets the error message:

cdfs_mount: unknown descriptor type

when he tries to mount it using the command line:

# mount -r -t cdfs -o noversion /dev/rz4c /cdrom

First, I tought this is not a CDFS-Format, but he tells me that he can
mount it with the same command on other UNIX-Systems (dUNIX < V4.0)
Besides, we tried to mount it as an UFS-CD and it didn't work either.

I let him check if he has the CDFS option in his kernel configuration
file and he had it. I let him rebuild a kernel with this file, but it
didn't help. 

The CDROM-drive must be ok, since he can mount other CDs using this
device name.

I ran out of ideas. Could you give me some new ones?

Our apologies for an error message that is not very useful:
	cdfs_mount: Unknown descriptor type

In fact, this message has been changed to:
	cdfs_mount: Unsupported disk format

This message is reported when the standard identifier on
the disk does not match one of the formats that is 
supported by CDFS.  These are:

"CD001" - ISO 9660 format
"CDROM" - High Sierra Group format

Please contact the disk manufacturer to verify the format
of the disk.

    Ok, but than why does it work with the same command line on
    dUNIX-Versions previous to V4.0? Do they support more disk formats with
    CDFS than V4.0 does?

There has been no intentional modifications to CDFS since v4.0
which would cause some disks to become unmountable.  Each disk
has a unique layout because of its unique file names.  Therefore
some disks cause the execution of code paths which don't get
exercised regularly, but which have bugs.

Please enter a QAR for this problem, and include which known
version(s) of Digital UNIX can successfully mount this disk,
and which version(s) cannot.
