|     I'll answer my own question and this is the answer I'll give the
    customer:
    
    1) According to the SPD, Digital Server Extensions, V4.0B:
      "Because of the high bandwidth requirements, RIS is supported 
       only in local area network environments."
    
       So, loading RIS across the country (wan) is not supported
    
    2) I looked through a lot of scripts at the kit/isl level and 
       see no way of tuning nfs at that level.  Besides, 1) is
       not supported
