SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (AP) -- A couple who billed themselves as experts on
the spiritual and paranormal lured young girls into bizarre sexual
rituals with promises they could end their troubles, police said
Wednesday.
Robert L. Barron and Nancy Ruth Ziegler were arrested Tuesday and
charged in connection with a Feb. 18 "wedding" ceremony that police
said was performed by Ms. Ziegler.
Barron, who allegedly had sex with the 15-year-old girl, cut her with a
razor blade and drank her blood, police said.
Barron and Ziegler have billed themselves as experts on the paranormal,
lecturing in the area and investigating unexplained occurrences such as
hauntings and unidentified flying objects. Police said the couple told
them the "wedding" ritual was based on a Native American religious
practice.
"I don't think that was any part of a religious experience. I think he
just liked doing that," said Schenectady Police Investigator Lincoln
Grimm.
Barron, 55, also known as Robin Boston Barron, was charged with two
counts of third-degree rape, two counts of endangering the welfare of a
child and one count of third-degree sexual abuse. He remained in
custody Wednesday without bail.
Ziegler, 37, also known as Raspberry Ziegler, was charged with
endangering the welfare of a child and unlawfully solemnizing a
marriage. She was freed on $400 bail.
Grimm said he has received nearly a dozen complaints about Barron.
Barron would allegedly approach his victims in shopping malls, tell
them he is an expert on Native American religion, and obtain an
invitation to their homes.
Ziegler would distract the adults while Barron took the girls in
another room, Grimm said. "He pretends to go through this Indian chant
and touches them inappropriately," he said.
In the couple's apartment, police said they found pornographic and
pedophilia books and magazines, publications on voodoo as well as young
girls' underwear and bottles of urine. Grimm said Barron would drink
the urine.
