    Rita,
    I used to have one like that all the time, I was flying with
    some kind of swimming motion, like breaststroke, and it felt
    very vivid and very realistic.  I often awoke at first expecting to still 
    be able to do it !  
    They were among my favorite of dreams.   I have no idea what it meant 
    except that I felt like I could go beyond my usual boundaries after I had
    one.   I wouldn't know what it means to anyone else.

                   When I dream of flying I regard it in one of two ways.
    I either need to be free of some person, place, thing, or situation 
    or I need to rise up and see the BIG picture from a diferent
    perspective. 
    
                  As I've said before all things in my dreams are symbols
    and all symbols in my dreams are intensly personal. Hope this helps.

    	I'm basically a closet reader as I never have much time to enter
    	any notes.  This note caught my attention, as one of my ex boy-
    	friends used to dream all the time of flying.  It became an
    	obsession with him, he wanted to fly like that in real life not
    	just in his dreams.  
    
    	He would go to sleep everynight ready to fly, anyplace, he absolut-
    	ley loved flying in his dreams.
    
    	I have never flown, outside of plane, but it sure sounds
    exciting...

    I have had some really vivd dreams about hang-gliding.  I have never
    flown in my dreams without some kind of apparatus so on some level my
    rational mind must step in and provide me with the means to make it
    "real".  They've been some of the most vivid dreams I've ever had and I
    can still feel the way it feels to take off and land, etc., although I
    haven't had one of these dreams for years!  
    
    I think, for me, they're usually dreams indicating that I need to take
    risks, go adventuring, etc.

    You might enjoy any of Richard Bach's books.  They're all about flying
    and right in line with dejavu-type topics as well.

        This reply may seem kinda of foggy since I only read a small part
    of the article a few years ago.  I think it was in some A.R.E.
    literature...anyway, Deidre someone at UNC (i think) had done a good
    bit of research on dreams and it seems that one of the conclusions
    about Flying Dreams was that in a high % of subjects dreams of flying
    were a prelude to Lucid Dreaming.  Sorry that was so vague...you know
    what they say about the memeory...hmmm, what *DO* they say about the
    memory?  I forget!!  ;-)

    it happens that they are all very significant for me :

	Todd : When I wake up, and even afterwards, I feel like I    
               am able to do it.

	Mark : flying may equals freedom to me as well, as some time after my
               dream I suddenly realized that I am free.
	
        Deb : I understand your ex boyfriend in his wish to fly in
              real life, as in those dreams it seems so easy,
              and I am certain (in my dream) that it is always possible
              to do it. 
              In my last dream I was showing someone how to fly, I hope it was
              my boyfriend, everything is better when it is shared.

	Nanci : I too still feel the way it feels to take off, I use my
                hart to become lighter and lighter, and then ... I take off,
                woao ! (in English : wow !) 
                About risks, yes I am going to take some as I am taking
                one year leave to create a company, I will cook and
                deliver vegetarians meals.

	Cindy : thank you very much for the pointer. I hope I can find Richard
                Back's book in France ... but I know that if it's time for me
                I will find them.
	

	Capt. Scott : It seems to me that dreaming of flying might be very
                      common, and at least it is a very old human dream.
                      A prelude of Lucid Dreaming ... mmmmm ... that sounds
                      interesting.

    Look for "Jonathan Livingston Seagull" by Bach - that was by far his
    most popular book and you should be able to find it in France.

    My husband flys in his dreams and so did his dad and his grandfather.
    
    His daughter visited us this Christmas (she just turned 6).  One night
    she climbed into her dad's lap and told him that when she was home (in
    Maine), she often dreamed that she would fly down to find him and then 
    they flew together.
    
    I find dreams of flying to be especially significant.
    
    I've been thinking lately ... angels fly and teleportation is a common
    science fiction theme.
    
    I think it's about time mankind learned how to fly or teleport
    physically.  
    
    Lets evolve, shall we? :-)

    I used to dream I was flying all the time when I was a kid...haven't
    done so in a while...until last night.  I dreamt I was flying by just
    holding out my arms.....and today is my last day at Digital (got a new
    job in another city).............I wonder what that means?????

    Can't speak to teleportation, but mankind (or a subset thereof, to be
    more precise) knows how to fly.  I learned how to do so many years
    ago.

                             be in good physical condition, and
    pass 
         the FAA written and flight test. ;-)

    	I dream about flying all the time. For me, I think, it is related to  
    	my flying kites back home (in INDIA) and was my
    	favourite sport (INDIA there are fights between kites!).
    
    	I have never been able to capture that sense of exhiliration
    	and freedom I used to get when I flew kites in anything else. 
    	
    
    	One of these days I am going to learn handgliding. I once
    	dreamed of how society would look if humans suddenly learned to fly.
        
    	Some of it was funny, once instance was of cops chasing people
    	who were flying beyond the speed limit and using nets to stop them 
    	and another was people working out at gyms to tone their wings. 
    	
    	The more I thought about it I realized how radically different
    	society would be, maybe I will write some of my thoughts on it
    	one day.

    Flying dreams are the mental projections by the mind of certain
    kinds of energy flow in the body. The energy feels as if it were
    flowing along the skin, returning up the spine. 
    
    I,ve had a fair number of flying dreams over the years. Self imposed
    limitations enter in  curious ways... For example people mentioned
    flapping their arms. In my  earlier years I had trouble gaining
    any altitude. I would fly along about head height. 
    
    	A somewhat similar type of dream I,ve had on numerous occasions
    was walking on water... I,d just walk along briskly to keep from
    sinking....

    I used to spend time pondering the differences between dreams and
    reality.
    
    In dreams we frequently don't realize that we are dreaming... we think
    we are awake... 
    
    	.... so perhaps we are actually dreaming right now and will wake up
    in a world with different physical laws where we can fly and teleport
    and manifest the creations of our imagination.
    
    Maybe we'll go to sleep tonight and wake up in that place tomorrow.

    I have had dreams of flying for about 20 years now...and it is always
    the same dream...once about every 6-9 months.
    
    I am in a very large, vacant house with a stairway that goes up
    through the middle of the house...all the doors and windows are
    open...the house is very bright and airy...and I am being chased
    by a Tyranasaurus Rex...the BIG meateating dinasaur of days gone
    by!  I run all over inside that house with this hungry lizard hot
    on my heals.
    
    I finally run outside, take a leap into the air which gets me about
    3 feet of the ground and I start "swimming" up, up and away until
    I am about 20 feet above the dinasaur's head.  I "fly" around up
    there just as happy as can be watching "him" chase other people
    below me. (He never catches anyone, and noone else joins me in
    the air above.) 
    
    When I awaken I feel a very noticeable "flutter" in my chest and upper
    abdomen.  It isn't a "fear" feeling...but an alive, pulsating feeling 
    that is quite pleasant.
    
    I've read elsewhere that flying in your dreams indicates an out-of-body
    experience.  I would love to think that is what I'm doing...but I can't
    figure out where or what the "terrible lizard" is...

    	I enjoyed hearing your dream.  :-) In fact I think I had it once or 
    twice myself when I was little, and really into prehistoric stuff.
    
    	I think it's not unknown to run into 'little nasties'
    like old T. Rex in astral/OB travel, but the character of that 
    particular dream sounds more to me like a psychological drama than astral 
    work (?)

    I've had a dream on and off for the last 15 or so years.....I have
    an invisible horse that can fly....I am indoors when I fly usually
    and he'll take me wherever I want to go...but the minutes someone
    comes into the picture the horse disappears and dumps me on the
    ground. Has anyone else had any dreams of "flying" where you are
    not actually doing the flying yourself?

    Yes, I'm sure it was psychological (darn!) as I'm about the *most*
    grounded person I know...I won't even fly in airplanes anymore...
    I'd rather drive 2,000 miles to get where I've got to go.
    
    There were many *strange* things going on with and around me when
    I was 8-12 years old.  I would awaken at 3:00 a.m. regularly trying
    to scream but nothing would come out (an angel sitting on my chest?).
    I would be covered in perspiration and then be acutely aware of
    "something else" in my bedroom with me.  I would take my pillow and
    blanket and go into the kitchen and sleep under the table there the
    rest of the night with no problem.  After a couple years of this
    nightly routine my Mom went down to the county courthouse to see if
    the land we had built our house on was an old Indian gravesite.
    We lived on Lake Bawbeeze (Bawbeese?) which was inhabitied by a Chief
    by the same name for a very long time.  Mom couldn't confirm anything
    so she just started telling me "It's all in your head."

    POSTSCRIPT:  At 8 a neighbor girlfried got a Ouji board for X-Mas and
                 we "played" with it regularly...until my mom found out
                 and she *hit the ceiling* and I was forbidden to go near
                 one again!  I haven't touched one since.  
    
     

    
    I always look forward to my dreams of flying!
    
    Sometimes it seems that when I am under an extreme amount of pressure
    in my daily life, these dreams are there to remind me of the limitless
    freedom that is also available to me.  
    
    In my dreams there is usually one certain place, high in the mountains
    on a warm sunny day, that I will find myself gliding from treetop to
    treetop.  Before flight I can feel the wind against my face and just 
    will myself to "lift-off".  As a child, and before I learned it could be
    that easy, I would run vigourously down the street, with my pillow
    clutched against my chest, and then leap with all my might.
    
    I have just begun my training in Hang-Gliding and am somewhat anxious for
    this dream to become a reality "here" as well as "there".

    I had one of those flying dreams last night and I hadn't had
    one in many years.  I started with the breast stroke swimming motion and
    then took off.  It was also windy as well.  When I awoke I felt like I
    should be able to fly anytime. What a great feeling.
    
    I wonder why Todd and I fly in the same manner.  Is using the
    breaststroke a typical way of dream flying?  Anyone else fly that way?
    
    As a note, I was having nightmares last night, due to an upsetting
    book I read.  I think my flying dream was some sort of escape.  
    I don't know what dreams are but they sure are interesting.
    
    Hoping to fly again soon.

    I've had these, too, repeatedly.
    
    It started as a girl, dreaming I was in dance class with other girls. 
    I started flying while they still danced on the ground.  I also dreamed
    I could fly home from school while the other kids walked.  Both dreams
    were clearly compensations for feelings of inadequacy.
    
    As an adult, these dreams don't usually involve others so clearly.  I
    dream that I am flying down steps rather than walking - I think, "Gee
    this is really easy.  Why don't I do it all the time?"
    
    In lucid dreams I've tried to fly higher but it is really hard.  I only
    managed to fly freely a few times. I think I am now dealing with my
    inner limitations (as noted previously).  I still have  feelings of
    inadequacy but not so much in competition with others.
    
    Even so, when I wake, I feel and believe I can do it, for a few
    minutes.

    It's interesting that you associate the flying dream with inadequacy. I
    have correlated the occurrence of my flying dreams with periods in my
    life where I had triumphed over adversity. It is the feeling on waking
    that you are left with the impression that "all things are possible"
    ;-) On analysing my feelings the next morning, it was as if my inner
    self was trying to tell me; "Hey, don't be so hard on yourself, you are
    doing better than you give yourself credit for!" <= The positive side
    of inadequacy I guess..

    My "inadequate" dreams tend to be the, "Someone's breaking into the
    house and I can't scream or move or I can't see ", " I am in danger but
    cannot get out of the way", "I'm being confronted by someone
    threatening" where in normal life I could probably deal with the threat
    o.k.

    Lately I have been more conscious of trying become "conscious" while in
    a lucid dream and thereby control some aspects. A few nights ago I had
    dropped off to sleep and I managed to make the connection (I think!). I
    was lying on my back, had entered a dream but my conscious mind was
    partially active and I wondered if I could tell my inner self to
    "astral travel". I gave the command and the ever willing inner self
    acknowledged and the next thing I noticed was a strange whooshing sound
    in my ears, then as if an inner "me" started slowly ascending out of my
    body. I was just about to turn and look down at myself and my wife and
    at this point, I was overcome by panic and sub-consciously I feared the
    possible "reality-shift" that might occur if I let the experience
    continue. I then tried to shout, anything to break off the experience.
    I was aware that my body was paralysed but I managed to break the spell
    and woke up. 

    I'm not sure what to make of the experience but it was interesting to
    say the least ;-)

    My flying 'technique' starts by doing a long jump and realising that I
    don't need to put my feet down ... I just keep going.
    
    Like others, I have rarely turned this into a real 'free' flying trip,
    but when I do it feels wonderful. All my flying dreams (which seem to
    come in waves) make me feel very good about myself.

    It's funny, we all seem to have different feelings about flying
    dreams.
    
    I tend to have them when I am going through a difficult time,
    usually at the point when I think things can't possibly ever
    improve.  Then I have these wonderful dreams where at first I 
    think I'm earthbound, but suddenly I remember I can fly, and I 
    just run, jump and take off.  The exhileration I feel during these 
    dreams is really amazing, and I wake up in the morning with a much 
    better mindset and a feeling that I can conquor anything.

    The only time I ever had dreams of flying, I had a personal flying
    machine (something not much larger than my body [for comfort], with
    controls right at the fingertips).
    
    What I have dreamed of is teleportation, and in one, I swear the group
    of us "attempting" to 'port really were about to succeed. (a group of
    off worlders 'ported us to perform some measurements of our psychic
    abilities ;-)

    I can never seem to stay in the air to long, just long enough to
    get over a fence or to show someone what I am doing.
    
        I always thought that I flew like that because I am a swimmer...

Greetings from New Zealand.  I realise its been a while since the last note was 
entered for flying dreams; My first dream flight was nearly 30 years ('nuff said)
and I looked up a dream book then - Dreams of flying refer to an inner sense of
ambition.  A difficulty in flight eg. not being able  to go higher/losing
altitude, refers to the self-imposed retraints we have.  Also a fear of success.

Hope that helps.  I still "fly" though not as frequently, and look forward to 
them each time.

    When I was a small child, aged around 6/7 or so, I had vivid dreams
    with two recurrent themes. Firstly, I could fly (Peter Pan style)
    wherever I wanted, usually unseen, and nearly always in places I would
    normally visit. Secondly, I had a small car, and could drive it
    wherever I wanted, often enormous distances, visiting relatives and
    friends. In both cases I always felt a need to be "home" before I woke
    up. After all these years, I still remember them. Very occasionally I
    still have flying dreams.

    I do not fly exactly, sort of glide, like when going down or up
    stairs..  my feet just sort of leave the surface, and it takes a while
    to realize that I am not touching the ground.  
    
    Teleportation... If you can imagine it you can do it.  But first, you
    have to take care of the obsticles (sp) in the way.  Imagine leaving
    from your bed, you need to be able to cloth yourself properly and then
    you have to avoid all objects or go through them.  I believe that
    through is easier, see, there are no solid objects and you are not
    solid either, you simply phase the holes in your body atoms with the
    holes in the door or the tree, and pass through... aw, that is holes
    matched with solid items.  
    
    
    I have levitated my entire body twice that I know about.
