| | Miramont Castle in Manitou Springs was once reported to be haunted. It's been
renovated and is now considered to be a tourist attraction. At Christmas time,
they have quite a few Victorian Christmas celebrations there, complete with
wassail.
There is also a tunnel on Old Stage Road through which the old stagecoaches
did, indeed, pass through; rumor has it that you can hear the stagecoach
passing through at midnight...but who wants to be on those twisted narrow
mountain roads when it's so dark! (except the adolescents who have keggers up
there, and always seem to be inviting danger, anyway)
ooooeeeeeooooo...

I heard that rumor back in high school and a few of my friends and
I went out to see what we could hear/see. Nothing in any of the
tunnels did we ever see or hear but we did manage to scare each
other and a few dates. 8^)
On the other hand we did incounter a strange event one night in
one of the train tunnels going up ute pass. One night while walking
thru a tunnel it became very dark about the middle and we could
no longer see light at either end. Odd considering you could look
from either end afterwards and see the moonlight on the opposite
end. We never did figure it out.
Re:Miramont castle I belong to a railroad club that shares the castle
with the historical society and have felt wierd everytime I've been
    in there day or night.

| | Several years ago (when I was very young) I attended, of all
things, a Halloween party at Miramont Castle. Had heard it
might be haunted so kept my eyes (all three ;-) ), ears, and
    	mind open all evening.

Perhaps it was the scads of party-goers, but after several
hours of trying to discern the Castle's energy the only even
somewhat weird event that occurred was my accepting a date
from someone dressed up as Adam Ant. =8*)

Jerry, do have any more information regarding Miramont Castle?
I'm truly fascinated with the place!

Carla, I dont know much about it at all but it can be real creepy
inside about 1 am when you are the only one in it. The rail club
I belong to is housed above the garage and the only "facilities"
for the club are in the castle. It seems like the perfect place
for a halloween party or the ultimate game of hide and seek as a
child. The people staffing it in the summer know alot about it's
history and who lived there. I understand that it was used as an
apartment building for many years and before that private owners.
Sorry I'm not of much help.

The most likely explanation for this is that the moon went behind
a cloud. Must of seemed pretty spooky though.
Another, less likely explanation, which would result in the phenomenon
being reproducible would be if the tunnel was shaped like this:
    _____________________________________________________________________
    ______________ ______________
		  \ /
                   _____ _____
			\ /
                         __________ __________
				   \ /
                                    _____
(Vertical scale relative to horizontal much exaggerated).
If the drop in the floor is slightly more than a person's height and
the level ends are long enough then the ends of the tunnel would be
invisible from the lowest point, though quite visible looking through
from either end. If the dip happened gradually enough in a typically
high, dark RR tunnel it could easily be missed. The ceiling could
even drop an equal amount (as long as it didn't drop more than the
cross-sectional height of the tunnel) without changing the effect
and making it much more difficult to notice.
