I once had an interesting experience with a screech owl, and another
    with a pheasant.

One evening my wife and I were in our library, when we heard a
commotion in a tree near the house. It was about 10:00 pm. We both
went outside to our porch to see what the noise was; it turned out
to be a screech owl. The owl flew directly at us, scaring the **
out of me! He landed about a foot from where we had been standing
(by this time we were inside, looking out from the closed door)
and rocked back and forth, making a horrible racket with his claws
and his beak. We fed the owl some moistened cat food, which he ate,
and both Kim and our downstairs neighbor Franz took photographs
(Franz is an avid photographer and has a complete darkroom).

The owl left after a time, never to return. The pictures *did not
develop.* Both sets of film came out black. Other shots on the same
roll were fine. Remember, this is two separate sets of pictures,
developed in different labs, from two cameras. I believe that the
owl was a being who was trying to tell us something; I only wish
I could figure out what the message was.

The pheasant haunted me for four days. My drive to work at the time
took me past a cornfield. The time of the drive varied greatly,
from early morning (7 am) to early afternoon (10:30 am). Whenever
I would pass the field, a pheasant would walk across the road in
front of my car, causing me to stop and wait. This occurred four
days in a row, at different times and in different weather conditions.
I assume it was the same bird, and have never figured out why it
wanted to stop my car every day.

An ancient Mediterranean superstition very prevalent around the
time of Christ was that owls were omens of bad luck. Did any such
bad luck follow. [Outside of blank exposures, that is. :-)]

Yes, hawks circling over head means that you will soon have a duck
jump out of a pond and bite your leg.

No bad luck occurred after the owl incident. Then again, I'm not
    eastern Mediterranean.

| | This is probably the closest note to what I'm concern about so I'll
    write this here.

Thru the years I have had a woodpecker become a particular bad omen
for me. This bird has a good habit of showing up just before something
tragic happens in life or my housemate's life. Apparently before
I moved to Lancaster this bird has predicted several incidents.

    Car accidents, deaths, serious illnesses.

The reason I am bringing it up now is because it visited me yesterday
in my back yard. For what it's worth I am really hoping that it
is just a matter of timing for this bird and that nothing will happen
    this year.

Has anyone else experienced this sort of thing? Can a bird be such
    an omen?

    Denise

Freud once said "Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar."

Woodpeckers are very common birds, albeit less noticed than birds
which like to feed on people's lawns.

Apparently you are in a new locale, and while I couldn't say for
sure, it would seem that such a move would change the "rules" by
which woodpeckers are brought to your attention.

I would say that it is quite likely that in this case "a [bird]
    is just a [bird]".

| | re: .9 Birds as bad omens.

I have never heard of a particular bird as being a bad omen
except when a bird somehow or other gets inside one's house. This
is suppose to indicate something bad, although I don't remember
if its a death in the family or what.

The ancient Romans and some other Mediterranean people of the period
considered seeing an owl in the daytime an exceptionally bad omen.
The owl cound be anywhere, BTW.

| | The woodpecker usually in my back yard but most the time it ends
up on my house rapping continously to let me know that it's still
    around.

This bird does not come back every year and does not always show
up at my house. There has been times when it will appear at my
    housemate's moms house.

The last time I saw the bird was about two years ago. It would show
up, something would happen, and then it would be gone.

| | I would tend to agree with Topher, woodpeckers are common.

Perhaps you have a bug problem, as woodpeckers look for their food
in the wood they peck at.

I think that if you believe that something "bad" will happen because
of this bird appearing, that you will experience something bad (and
then connect it to the bird). However, it is your choice to expect
either good or bad. Denise, expect good! And if the woodpecker
gets too obnoxious, send him down here--I haven't seen or heard
    one in over two years!

    un saludo,

| | Well, I guess the woodpecker remains to be a bad omen for me and
    my family.

My housemates father was in a car accident this weekend. Fortunately,
he is ok. This time I guess we are lucky it wasn't serious.

The other type of thing that has been going on, which has also been
a warning sign for me is smelling flowers. It is usually inside
the house or car. This week it was at work and I know that no one
brought in newly fresh cut flowers.

The flower smell has also been associated with bad stuff.

    Any comments?

    Denise
