Syracuse isn't a doormat, but a tie by Michigan State against them
early in the season (with State holding an edge in the experience
department coming in) can't be considered too "excellent". I think
Syracuse was a beneficiary of the absolutely schizophrenic
inconsistency of the Pac-10 this season in their Aloha Bowl win.
Arizona looked like they were on tranquilizers or something.

Ending any chance of the Big Ten placing *five* teams in the final Top
20 (they had five in the Top 25 going into the bowls)...
Maybe the Big Ten is up to their usual bowl tricks; Air Force wasn't
even supposed to be there 'cept for they won the regular season battle
of the academies.

Syracuse is going to have a good football team over the next
few years. They are a very young team, and they will be
returning most of their guys next year, including Graves who
will only be a Sophomore and Rob Carpenter who will be a senior.
The area that they will lose most of their strength in is their
offensive line. Most of that line is graduating. During the
Aloha Bowl, the announcers thought that Syracuse would definitely
be a Top 20 team next year.

| The Buckeyes' level of preparation looked awful. True, it's hard to
simulate a_option offense in practice, and true, a pass orientated
squad like the Buckeyes perhaps suffered a bit more in the wet than
the Falcons... but the level of unpreparedness and disarray on the
Ohio State sideline was hard to look at without wincing.
"Coach" Cooper perhaps sealed his fate with that utterly STUPID play
call that cost them a Rose bid, where he selected to have a slow-footed
peckerwood QB go for the first down instead of the best frosh RB of the
year in Robert Smith.
The worst part of last night? No doubt that Cooper's coaching staff
was unable to cook up any blocking schemes to exploit his 50lb/player
advantage on the OL. Second worst was the fack that, after nearly a
month layoff, Frey and his WRs were totally out of synch.
Sad. Cooper is dead meat in Columbus now.

You really think so, T? Think he'll go this year? If you ask me, Ohio
State isn't much better than when Bruce was there, but there seems to
be something building in the background. I wouldn't be surprised if
Cooper leads them to the Rose Bowl next year...if he's still around.

| No, Coop's got a contract so I doubt he'll be fired right now unless
a supercoach comes available. But, I hang out with many a_alum of
the vaunted Red-and-Silver [hic] and I guarantee you that stupid call
he made that cost them the Rose will NEVER be forgotten. First chance
he comes up lame they'll jump him big-time. I've lost all respect for
him, seeing a fine passer and competitor like Frey misused like he was
last night was inexcusable. Anybody notice the contrast in intensity
level between the two squads?
