| | The Blazers are facing a big challenge tonight. The Detroit Pistons
are in town. This is the Blazers first chance for some much needed
    revenge.

Jerome Kersey and Cliff Robinson are questionable for tonight's
game. After seeing the fall Jerome took in the Laker game Tues.,
I suprised he's even ALIVE! I think that they will both see action
    tonight.

I believe this will be a fairly low scoring game, around 115-112.
Portland will win and go 4-0.

You seem to forget that Phoenix hasn't beaten Portland in Portland
for something like 20 straight games. Portland is VERY tough at
home! Jerome Kersey will have the game of his life with Chambers
TRYING to keep up with him!

The Blazers had two impressive wins this weekend, a 113-101 (it

Tell your problems to the Spurs (last year in the playoffs) or the
Lakers when Magic played center. Good teams find a way to win. Hornceck(sp)
showed he could really play that series and if you look at his stats
he compensated for KJ in his point guard contribution.

Portland had 8 people in double figures:
    Drexler 39 pts. 12 assits 11 rebs.
    Ainge 20 pts.
    Williams 20 pts.
    Porter 19 pts. 14 assists 5 steals

They only had 3 road games scheduled this month, 2 have already been

been the only tough home foes thus far.

The only ones that have a chance at handing them a loss are: Chicago

The Blazers, apparently ready to defend their crown, were 50-10
before they lost Walton to the ever-recurring foot injury and their
off guard, Dave Twarzdik, also got injured. They only won 9 games
the rest of the regular season and lost in the first round of the
    playoffs.

Portland's record is impressive thus far, but most of their games

Subject: Blazers 130, Sonics 124 (3 OT)
Date: 2 Dec 90 06:35:25 GMT
SEATTLE (UPI) -- Terry Porter's 38 points included the game-winning
basket Saturday night as the Portland Trail Blazers claimed a wild, 130-
124 triple-overtime victory over the Seattle SuperSonics.
Porter tied the game at 122-122 with a 15-foot jumper and then put
Portland ahead 124-122 with 1:30 left in the game with another long jump
shot.
Four free throws by Clyde Drexler and two by Jerome Kersey gave
Portland a 130-124 lead with 11.9 seconds left and Seattle finally
succumbed.
Kersey added 24 points and 10 rebounds for the Blazers, now 12-2.
The Sonics, 4-8, were led by Xavier McDaniel's 41 points on 18-of-36
field goal shooting. Threatt scored 19.
The Sonics had 114-108 lead halfway through the second 5-minute
overtime period, but the Blazers came back on Kersey's four points and a
Buck Wiliams tip.
Seattle's Gary Payton made a driving layin for a 118-114 lead with 10
seconds to go before Danny Ainge cut it two points on two free throws
with 7.3 seconds to go.
Ainge then stole McDaniel's inbound pass and hit Porter for a layin
with 3.6 seconds to go. Seattle's Michael Cage missed a shot at the
buzzer.
Both the fourth quarter and first overtime period ended with emotions
running high between the two Northwest rivals.
McDaniel's 20-foot baseline jumper had put the Sonics ahead 105-103
with 55 seconds left in the first overtime. The Sonics were in good
shape when Threatt made it 106-103 with two seconds to go after Kersey
was called for a technical following a shoving match with McDaniel.
Porter caught the inbounds pass, had a shot from 3-point range
blocked back into his hands, shot again and made it. Referee Ron
Garretson said he shot it before the buzzer to the shock of most
watching.
The Blazers, 12-2, had a chance to win in overtime when Derrick McKey
fouled Kersey at the buzzer and Seattle leading 95-94. Kersey's first
free throw was off the iron, but he made his second to extend the game.
Seattle had gone ahead on Threatt's 5-foot jumper with 4.9 seconds
left in the game.
The Sonics held a 14-point advantage going into the fourth quarter,
but the Trail Blazers rallied to grab an 89-88 lead with 1:40 left in
the game on Clyde Drexler's fast-break layin. Seattle's Michael Cage
made a 3-point play, but Porter pumped in a 3-point jumper and then
stole the ball from Gary Payton for a layin and a 94-91 Portland
advantage with 45.5 left in the game.
But the Sonics came back on McDaniel's driving layin with 33.5 to go
and Threatt's short jumper after Drexler missed a long shot with 11
seconds remaining.
The Sonics dominated the first half and led 53-39 lead at the break.
They led 77-63 going into the fourth quarter.

Sunday they beat the Jazz 101-97. Now they go on the road for four
games. Tues. at Miami, Wed. at Orlando, Fri. at Indiana, and Sat.

The Blazers are a wonderfully balanced team this year. And, they can
serve as a model for the Sonics. A few years ago, the Blazers had
alot of team dissention and lack of chemistry. I'm not sure what
caused the players to put their egos aside and play as they were
capable of (Buck W. helped), but the Sonics could learn from them.
They have too much talent to be 4-9 (1-9 since they started 3-0).

I agree with you that the Sonics have much more talent than their
record shows. What the Blazers did to help morale was to trade
Kiki Vandewhatever (He and Kersey didn't get along too well) and
dump Mike Schuler. The players (especially Clyde) didn't like Schuler
very much, so that helped too. They then replaced him with Rick
Adelman, whom the players knew very well and liked. (Adelman had
been an assistant coach with the Blazers since the championship
    season of '77).

I also think that Buck Williams has helped this team more than any
thing else, though! He has such a great attitude and gives it his
    all every game!

    Glen.

P.S. The Blazers play in Miami tonight. They should be 15-1 after

Portland has a 5 game win streak of their own, not to mention that
they are 16-1! They are also undefeated on the road this year (6-0).
Portland traditionally plays Chicago tough and I certainly don't
think it will be any different this time. Portland has looked tired
the last three games after going three overtimes with Seattle.
They haven't had any time to rest yet. They have tonight off then
play in Indianapolis on Friday, then Chicago on Sat. Hopefully,
the team will win easily on Friday so the starters can have a rest.

For one thing, the Celtics have given us something to talk about this
year after a 2 year layoff. If you could read 109.* or 9.* in CELTICS,
you'll see that I've entered quite a bit on the Suns in this young 15

Where were you when LA got romped in May and were sucking wind for most

| | The Blazers are HOT! They beat the Bulls for the second time this
year 109-101. Clyde had 29 points and Terry Porter had about 26
or so. Jordan was his usual awesome self, but the rest of the Bulls
did practically nothing. Portland now has tied the second best
record with one loss in NBA history! The record is 23-1 held by
Washington in the '40's or '50's. Portland has a great chance of
beating that record. I tell you, I am really impressed with this
team! I really believe that they can beat anyone anywhere and I
think the team knows it too. They went 4-0 on this road trip.
I know they didn't play a lot of tough teams, but any team is tough
when your playing 4 games in five nights on the road.

Pacers got creamed by Portland 122-96. Kevin Duckworth led the
Blazers with 21 points and Clyde had 20 with 9 rebs. Last nights
game was a perfect example of the versatility of this team. This
team is great because Clyde doesn't need to be the leading scorer
every night for the team to win. In fact, almost every night someone
else leads the team in scoring. The the mark of a truly great team!

The Trailblazers are definitely the best team in basketball. They are
just like a steamroller right now and don't fear anyone. Rightfully so.
Can they keep it up to the championship is the $64 question. Upsets in the
playoffs do happen because teams assume that pummeling another team in the
regular season means something in May. Means diddly other than home court
advantage.
Teams like the "declining" Lakers are great choices to upset the "clearly"
superior Blazers...

The Blazers had a 19 point lead after the 1st period. Dick Motta
then got his 2nd tecnical and got tossed from the game. That was
the best thing that could possibly happen to the Kings! The crowd
really got into the game after that and the Kings got amazingly
aggressive! The Blazers shot 63% in the 1st period, then dropped
to something like 27% in the 2nd, 33% inthe 3rd, and 31% in the
    4th.

I still can't believe it happened! Portland 88 Sacramento 100.

| 413.120 | Just a few thoughts ;^} | MTHOOD::WHITFORDRA |  | Tue Dec 18 1990 01:02 | 67 |
| | I'm new to this VAXnotes so bare with me. My name is Ray in Portland
and I'm sure glad Glen started this file. The Blazer's are the only
    team we have!

What a start! I'm sorry the fans of hustle do not get to see Jerome
play as much as we get to see him. The man plays with alot of heart.
There is a three or four story picture of "Mercy" on a building
downtown put up by, who else, NIKE. His intensity shows!

Clyde is great but I worry about his "picking his spot" rather then
playing all out. He can also try to do to much on offense and that
    effects the others.

Terry Porter should be playing at the All-Star game. He has been the
"go to man" and he wants it! I have a feeling that Clyde will be
the only Blazer(besides Rick Adelman) on the West team. There are
to many good players but Rick might get one more in.

Kevin Duckworth is a better player from last year. His rebounds
are up because he is more agressive. Last year I would scream at
him to go after it instead of him waiting for the ball to bounce
his way. The center on this team needs to be a scorer and "Duck" is
    that.

Buck Williams helped focus this team last year to care about the
team, not the stats or the money. Those things will come as they
did when Paul Allen gave Clyde,Buck then Jerome new contracts.

Speaking of the owner, we were told that a new arena was in the
working but nothing yet! The Memorial Collisum will be the smallest
in the league once the Jazz finish theirs.

The bench has good days and bad days (the Kings can tell you) but
three players stick out. Danny Ainge from Eugene is what we needed
and Cliff Robinson has improved his patience on offense. His defense
at all three front line positions are good (remember the Robinson
duel last year when both of our centers missed six games). Mark
Byrant has also gotten better at the offense end and is a "BULL"
    under the boards.

Danny Young,Wayne Cooper and Alaa (?) know their roles. "Petro"
is another story. I think we should have kept Shawn McDaniel instead
but Petro's contract might have been guarnteed.

Rick Adelman is laid back but with a will to do his best and the
players respect him for that. Rick was a feisty player back in the
early 70's and knew what his role was. Geoff Petrie played with
Rick and is head of operations for the Blazers(VP or something).
    One big happy family.

The big question, can this winning continue at this pace? To para-
phase Buck after the game in Indiana, "we are not machine's".
They know their weaknesses and their strenghs and as long as Rick
has them playing to their game, no one can match their total team
effort. I agree that it's been fairly easy up to now but the road
is calling and there are two games with Golden State this week.

The Suns are our one true test but even with the X-man I will pick
my Blazers to win the Pacific. The Lakers are old and not in a grove
yet. It just might be to late.

Sorry about the length, May I come aboard?

| 413.133 | Blazers vs. Warriors | MTHOOD::WHITFORDRA |  | Wed Dec 19 1990 12:45 | 18 |
| | Blazers 122, Warriors 94

1st quarter 35 to 9, lowest points in club history scored by a
opponent in the 1st quarter. Nellie tried to slow it down (like
    the Kings) and it backfired.

Typical Jerome Kersey line, 18 points, 7 boards, 5 assists, 4 steals,
    3 block shots

Clyde had 8 offensive boards out of 9 total.

Blazer One flies out of the snow today heading for wet Oakland to
take on the Warrior's on Thursday. Six out of the next seven are
    away from the Coliseum.

    Happy Holidays,

| 413.135 | King of the Mountain...for now | MTHOOD::WHITFORDRA |  | Wed Dec 19 1990 18:40 | 26 |
| | Why does everyone want to knock off the one on top :-) ?
The Blazers meet : Warriors on 12-20, away
                       Clippers on 12-21, away
                       Nuggets on 12-23, home
                       Knicks on 12-26, away
                       Hornets on 12-27, away
                       Cavaliers on 12-29, away
                       Bucks on 12-30 ,away

Doesn't look real tough, does it? It is seven games in eleven nights.
Everyone is up to playing the Blazers so I expect to see the best
from these teams. Even if they win four out of the next seven, that's
fourteen and four in December and twelve games were on the road.
They then get four days off to wait (is that good?) for the Lakers
to come to town the 1-3-91.

I am starting to look at the schedule and wondering were a letdown
would happen. Three more long road trips are still on the schedule
(4,5,6 games) but lets see what happens tomorrow night.

    Go "No Respect" Blazers :-)

    R.W.

| 413.137 | Portland Has a good chance to extend lead... | KIDVAX::MBROOKS |  | Thu Dec 20 1990 11:31 | 9 |
| | 5 of the next 7 teams that portland play are well below .500, they
should take at least 5 and I expect theyll take 6...That means a
28-3 record (Sounds good to me) They have a 6 game lead over Phoenix
who is very hot right now and a 7 game lead over lakers, after the
lakers dropped one to CLEVLAND !!!!!.... Like to see portland
stretch there lead out to 8-10 games over the next 2 weeks.....

Bulls Fan But enjoy portland (expecially over the lakers)

| 413.138 | Portland loses again | VAXWRK::NEEDLE | Money talks. Mine says "Good-Bye!" | Fri Dec 21 1990 08:44 | 59 |
| | Didn't see any mention of this here yet. Portland lost last night to Golden
State, 125-118. Kevin Duckworth fouled out after only 28 minutes. Drexler had
37 and Porter 22 but it wasn't enough to overcome superb games by Hardaway (36
points and 15 assists, which means he was directly or indirectly responsible
for 30 of GS's 44 baskets), Mullin, and Richmond.

| 413.139 | Close but no cigar. | MTHOOD::JOYNERGL | The Portland Kid | Fri Dec 21 1990 09:49 | 15 |
| | Yes, the Blazers lost last night. Duckworth fouled out with only
about a minute or so to go in the game. Drexler had another great
game and lead all scorers with 37. Buck Williams lead all rebounders
with 16. That obviously was not quite enough to stop the Warriors
tonight. The Warriors were a totally different team from just 48
hours before when the Blazers creamed them. They were lighting
it up from the outside, especially Hardeway. He ended up with a
big 36 points. Portland now stands 22-3 with the schedule looking
like this for the next three games. Tonight at Clippers, Sunday
at home vs. the Nuggets and Wed. at the Nicks.

I hope they can get back on the winning track tonight against the
    Slippers ;^) .

| | Sorry for passing on the misinformation about Duckworth's numbers. I guess
people don't figure they really need a center against Golden State.

| 413.141 | ...0-1 on this trip | MTHOOD::WHITFORDRA |  | Fri Dec 21 1990 12:20 | 26 |
| | The game was on the tube and the execution down the stretch was
worse then during the rest of the game. Drexler cannot seem to
understand that he is not a point guard and Tim H. stole the ball.
That was a possible four point swing with one minute to go. A great
play by Tim and stupid of Clyde.

Duckworth was hammered across the face by Lister and a fight almost
errupted. The ref's ( Darrel G. and two rookies ) failed to call
it a fragrant foul. On the other end Kevin didn't control his
emotions and pulled Lister from behind and WAS called for a flagrant
foul. Lister then wanted to fight, just showing the lack of respect
that was given to the ref's. Lister's foul was obviously more
vicious. He went right for Kevin's head. That could have been a
    8 point swing.

Kevin's offense all night with great, he kept Portland in the game
while everyon else was missing. The team sometimes fails to get the
ball to Kevin when he is open under the basket. I guess the Terry
and Clyde feel that Kevin should only get the ball on the pick and
roll or on post up plays.

The lack of execution during parts of the game cost the Blazers
    a victory.

    R.W.
