The Cavs are 3-0 since Nance returned to the line-up. I expect
this trend to continue when Daugherty returns. Having played
without Daugherty and Nance and several reserves hasn't really
hurt the team. Last I looked, the Cavs were only 4.5 games out
of first place in the rugged Central division.

| | It's very promsing that the Cavs are only 5 out. Nance had 31 points
the other night. Glad to see the injury didn't bother Nance's
performance. When Daugherty returns, the CAVS will once again be on
the path to an Eastern Conference Championship, and NOONE will stop
    them this year.

The Cavs are strting to roll... They are now 16-18 having won their
last 5 games. Currently, they are in 9th place in the Eastern
Conference... only the top 8 teams make the playoffs, but I have no
doubts the Cavs will make it (regardless of whether Daugherty returns
    this year).

The injuries have actually helped the Cavaliers as far as building
depth goes. If Chuckie Brown or Winston Bennett could ever get
consistent, the Cavs would be all set for now at small forward.
One of these guys goes out and has a great game and then disappears
    for 4-5 games...

I agree on the injuries helping, Paul. Dudley has turned into a
rebounding force, he should be a consistent backup to Daugherty, once
    he returns.

Speaking of which, has anyone heard anything about Daugherty's

I watched the game on the "OHIO Sports Channel" last night...

what a mistake! They looked good in the first quarter with
price hitting and nance slamming the ball in, but, after that...
it was all down hill. I couldn't bear anymore after the end of
the 3rd quarder, with the CAVS down by 15. The last few games I've
watched, they have had lots of trouble hitting their free throws.
Houston looks like a good team with a lot of no names on it.

The CAVS have not beaten the Rockets yet this year...the first
game, the cavs only scored 75 points...their lowest.

I heard last night that Harper.......ripped apart his knee!
He will not play for the rest of the year......

Now, is this good news or bad news???

What about this guy the cavs are to get from the Europeon league???
I heard that he does not plan on going to the cavs next year and
that he will live out his contract...I think he just wants more
    money.

    Hal,

Based on the boxscores I've seen of the last few weeks, they are
definetly having problems with foul shots. 50% in the previous game
and 14/24 last night. Seems more like the Cavs of '87.

Danny Ferry is the guy they got for Harper (+ picks). I think he'll
come play with the Cavs next year, however, he is being vague, and
refusing to talk to the Cavs till after he completes this season in
Italy. There season ends in April, so we should know more by this
    summer.

I didn't realize you could pull down non-local Sports Channels on a dish.
What kind of a setup do you have and how much did it set you back, if
    I may ask?

The Cavs lost, another one, last night...to Detroit. They didn't
look too good. It was a game untill the end of the 1st quarter.
Daughtery looked pretty good but his shooting percentage is very
low, something like 32% from the field. He just needs time, they
say. Without Dudly in the line-up the teams foul shooting has been
lots better. Price hit 3 consecutive 3 pointers in the game. I
couldn't watch the whole game.....too depressing.

I see that the Atlanta Hawks lost another game...that makes
6 in a row...and are only 1.5 games infront of Cleveland. Millwauke
won last night and are, I think 2.5 or 3.5 games ahead of Cleveland.

With any luck at all, the Cavs will make it into the playoffs....
Daughtery is a big asset on rebounds, but, after watching the game
last night...I think another asset is his ability to toss the long
pass down court for the big play. He did this several times last
    night.

Detroit got the win by their defense though...they were tough.

I missed the first quarter but caught the rest of the game..

I liked the commentators... they made some good points, especially
about the poor (rookie-like) passing of all the Cleveland guards
(except Price). Sure seemed like Detriot(tm) was getting away with
a lot of fouls.. the analysis agreed with my sentiment. Something to
the effect of "It's pretty easy to look good on defense, when the refs
let you get away with pushing the other team around"

Have to admire the way the subs made a game of it in the fourth
    quarter.

Detroit looks very beatable. Bet Philly would give them a good
    run right now!

    re: .45

Sence you watched the rest of the game....what was the final
    score???

You are right...there were alot of pushing going on and no
fouls called...what about the running with the ball deal? I
saw this happen twice durring the 2nd quarter. Then Elo gets
hit in the mouth...and no foul. I've seen acouple of games
now where the Cavs got pushed around and no fouls were called.
    The other game.......San Antonio.

Elo is a guy I just can't get any confidence in....everytime
I see him play, he is passing to the other team and taking shots
that never go in. Then another guy is Kerr, he is very irratic
too. But, I guess the reason they are playing is because of their
3 point hits. I saw Elo make several defensive errors too.
Hot Rod look good as did Nance. I think Price can play alot better
than I've seen him play lately too. I know he was the one making
the big beef a week ago about no one else on the team carring if
they won or not but, if I was him...I would put up first.

    Hal,

The final score was 105-96. Ehlo has had problems hitting the 3
pointer, but other than that, he's been fairly consistent. He is
playing because they traded Harper. They really don't have any other
experienced guards (other than Price). I haven't been too impressed
with Kerr.. he really has a strange shooting style, and everytime I've
    seen him he's been a brick-layer.

They need to get the inside game tuned up, then they should be fine.
When Daugherty was out they relied to much on the outside shooting and
Price. Without seeing the final score, you could tell if they had won
based solely on the shooting percentage of the guards.

We'll see what happens in the 2nd half. They need to move past a few
teams to get into half-decent shape for the playoffs.

Mark hit a big three pointer at the end of regulation to tie
the score and send it into overtime.

Once again...Ehlo screwed up in OT. missing a big two pointer
to put the game away...then on defense, he fouls a guy and they
    	win the game..........oh well.

Yea, it was an exceiting game last night. Brad had
a great game...his passes are what really helps. Nance was also
outstanding last night. It was a close game right up to the last
3 minutes. The Cavs really turned it on in the end, fighting for

Wilkens is probably trying to get as many candidates for the shooting
guard position for the 1990-91 season.

Reggie Williams - Wilkens says the guy has no clue on offense or
defense. He was poorly coached by the Clippers and he needs a
full training camp, plus part of the summer to evaluate his
    ability.

Derrick Chevious - a bust for Houston... may be helped by playing
with three all-stars (nance, daugherty and price)

Randolph Keys - small forward, may get moved to shooting guard.

    Jeff,

The biggest thing is the big D! Defense has been the big thing.
Nance and Daughtery, not to mention Bennett, have all been hitting
the boards...something you didn't see before. Then, Hot Rod has
raised his game a few notches too. It seams like everything falls
into the basket! It wasn't like that acouple of weeks ago. Daughtery
has taken comand inside too. They give him the ball....one time
he will drive toward the basket...you didn't see that too much
before...the next time he give it the hook shop...and its falling
in....it didn't do that before either. I think he has been setting
him self up for either shot now. The way he has been driving, opens
up his hook and his fall away jumper. Hot Rot has been hitting
the 15 footer with ease lately too. The team has been setting picks
that leave him open....I mean really open! Then, not to mention
the big 3 pointers.....they have been draining the other team with
    those!

The last 3 games I just couldn't stay in my seat. They have
looked awsome! I'm hopping to pick up tickets to the game here
on Wednesday. they will win on Wednesday....no doubt about it.

I was at the game. The Cavs didn't look good to me. Wilkens left
Bennett in too long at various points which left him to guard
either McHale or Bird = mismatch. Cleveland really needs Ferry next
year (or late this year)... This would allow them to have Daugherty,
Williams, Nance and Ferry and key front-court players.

Chevious and Brown logged DNPs last night. Chevious probably hasn't
learned the system yet. Brown is inconsistent.

Ehlo and Price both played extremely well, and Steve Kerr is beginning
to turn into a solid players in the Mark Price mold.

I will say one thing, Tree Rollins looked good on offense. If
the guy had the scoring mentality, he could have cleaned up on

Mike, Kerr doesn't start... Ehlo and Price start. Ehlo plays
excellent defense, can score, rebound and play the point. He
is vastly improved (compared to when he was barely an NBA player).

Kerr is subbing in as the third guard. He has an excellent shooting
range and is developing a style similar to Price. I don't think
he'll ever be that good, but he will be a solid backup point guard.

DrM... I must admit, your knowledge of sports is staggering.

Oakley for Cartwright is a bad trade... why? Cartwright is
getting old, and is not exactly a great center. In my opinion,
this trade can be evaluated now.

Harper for Ferry... Well, lets see... Harper is out for the season,
and who knows if he'll ever play again. If he does, will he still
be as quick as he was? His speed was his biggest asset. Ferry
is young and though not playing on the Cavs is still a question
mark. So basically, how do you evaluate this as being a bad trade

I can understand that. There is no doubt in my mind that they could

Harper was a free agent at the end of this season and may
have been leaving Cleveland anyways? I know one of the concerns
was what they'd have to pay to sign him... and then what they'd
have to pay Price, Daugherty and Williams based on what he signed

Oh, what a game! The Cavs down by 17, then come back with a last
second 3 pointer to put the game in overtime.....That was all she
wrote though.....the turnaround in OT......a bad call by the officials.
Ehlo was driving to the basket and ran into Jordan (the one man
team). Foul...called on Ehlo. Ehlo made the shot....dunk! Thats
pretty much how the whole game went, so, I really don't know why
I was so surprised about the call.

Yep, Jordan, the one man team from Chicago....the officials protect

Daughtery was swarmed whenever he got the ball but, no fouls were
called. Price did whatever he wanted throughout the game. Hot

The Cavs loose in New York.....

Another fiasco of a game.....! The Cavs are definately the
better team, but, conceded the game to the ..... none other than
... the officials! Yes, another game lost because of poor
officiating. I know some of you will get on here and say...here
he goes again...blaming it on the officials. Well, you are
right! The Cavs are not a "phisical" team and when playing
against a team that holds, shoves, hits, pushes, reaches in, etc,
etc...I think you get the picture...just cant match up. The
game was lost in the second quarter...not because of the officials
though...full court pressure by New York caught the Cavs off guard
and they turned the ball over toooooooo many times...bad passes
mostly. The thing about the game was...when the Cavs were on a
string, then get fouled, not called, their momentum would be lost.
That happened so many times that it was incredible.
Daughtery and Ewig (whatever his name is) were at each other
the hole night...all the official said was "now cut it out". I
heard him say it several times durring the game...but...no fouls
    were ever called.
Anyway, Hot Rod and Nance played a great game. Daughtery was
taken out of the game because of physical game that was being played.
Ehlo was really taken out of the game because of the same. Price
and Kerr both had a fair game. Bennett (sp) looked like crap.
I kinda blame hime for the loss. The Cavs came back to within 4
in the third then Bennett hogged the ball a couple of time and
missed easy shots and then had to even foul at the other end of
    the court....blam....back up a 10 point lead again. I just don't
know about that guy. The Cavs blocked several shots and dominated
    inside.

He didn't score much and didn't get the ball that often. On

Cleveland 36-39 Only two of them are home games

If I were a Cleveland fan, I would be rooting for them to lose the rest
of the way and get a high draft pick. Daugherty is incredibly
over-rated. Mediocre at best. Price is a whinney little punk. Bennet is
an adequate back-up that has to start now. Ehlo is streaky, good one
minute, lousy the next. This is not a good team. Definately not playoff
material. If they get Ferry and another top player in the draft they
might make some noise next year.

    Strongly disagree Hoot.

First of all, they traded their first round pick as part of the Ferry
deal.. so, where they finish really doesn't matter.

Daugherty, has been hurt most of the year. Lately, he has been
inconsistent, however, when he has a good night, noone will stop him.

Price, a whinner? Why do you say that? He got tossed one game and all
of a sudden he's a punk. Get real, everyone in the league complains to
the officials EVERYONE! And 99% of the time they have legitimate
gripes. Price has a great shot, can drive, and is an excellent
passer. Can't ask for much more from a point guard can you?

Ehlo, I'm not that high on. Too streaky.

Bennette shouldn't be starting, in my opinion, Hot Rod should. Hot Rod
is the main reason the CAVS are still in the hunt this year. His
offense has been awsome this year.

You've got to take the injuries into account when evaluating the CAVS,
however, I put more of the blame for last years playoff embarrasment,
and this years ineptness on the coach. IMO Lenny ain't getting the job
    done.

| | I don't see how you can blame Lenny Wilkins for the team's performance
this year. Going into this season, the Cavs had all the ingredients to
make a serious run at the Eastern Conference Title. Injuries probably
made it impossible for this season, but the bottom line on this team is
that management gagged big-time by trading Ron Harper for Danny Ferry.
They were already solid at the forward spots with Nance and Hot Rod, so
they certainly didn't have a pressing need for Ferry. Now, with Harper
gone, they have no one with comparable speed and quickness in the back-
court. Price and Harper should have been their backcourt for years to
come. Ehlo is nice to have, but he's not in the same class as Harper.
Typical Cleveland move. On the verge of success and they couldn't handle
it. Don't blame Lenny; the front office has ruined their future.

I find it fairly easy to find Lenny at fault for not being able to find
a way to keep Jordan from scoring 50 pts. every time they play Chicago.
These teams know each other too well with all the times they've faced
each other (including the playoffs for the last 2 years) for Lenny
not to even have a clue! The teams been terribly inconsistent and this
tends to be a coaching problem (Rogers and the Celtics come to mind).

I'm not familiar with whether or not Ferry is a shooter? I know he was
a big scorer in college, but was this in as a power-type forward? If
he's a shooter, then I see perfectly well, why the Cavs front office
went for it. Nance and Hot-Rod are too inconsistent with the outside
    shot.

Face facks, the Cads caint play four forwards, and Ron Harpers can't

If they had kept Harper, they'd still be a solid team in the East.

Laker_Ken hit it on the head - Cleveland's front-office screwed

Reguarding the game last night...the Cavs come back in the 4th
and steal the game. Malone went crazy in the 3rd making 9 of
nine shots. Nance is back...played a good game. Hot Rod was not
hot last night. Daughtery is back in form again...DUNK, SLAM, POP!!!
Bennett has good game. Kerr make BIG 3 pointer to open the 4th.
Officials were no better. Ehlo had tough night guarding Malone.
Close game, till the end. I was sweating it. Lots of blocked shots
in this game. Cleveland has been playing alot of the two man team

So, things get going, and we're doing our best to make it onto the

time for her to be knitting.
When all of a sudden she does her best "picador" imitation and jabs
these red knitting needles right into my eyes (I hate when that

If the Hawks go 2-0, Cleveland can go 2-1 to make the playoffs.

If the Hawks go 0-2, Cleveland is in regardless of what they do.

Subject: Cavs start season slow; finish strong
Date: 23 Apr 90 19:20:01 GMT

RICHFIELD, Ohio (UPI) -- Beating Philadelphia in the first round of
the playoffs will be difficult.
But as far as the Cleveland Cavaliers are concerned, it won't be
any more difficult than the road they traveled to get into the playoffs
for the third straight year.
Before the season began, Cleveland, winners of 57 games a year ago,
was considered a favorite to challenge for the NBA title in 1989-90.
That was before Brad Daugherty missed half of the season recovering from
foot surgery, before Larry Nance and Mark Price missed the start of the
year with injuries, and before Ron Harper was traded.
In addition, Chris Dudley started the year with a broken wrist,
Steve Kerr got chicken pox early in the season, and Wayne ``Tree''
Rollins injured a knee. Coach Lenny Wilkens spent the first month of the
season trying to find enough healthy bodies to get a full practice
together.
``It looked very bleak at the beginning of the year,'' Wilkens
said. ``All these things are happening, guys are saying `Wow, what did
we do wrong?' I just kept telling them `Hey, keep working hard because
out of this something good will come. It may be painful, but it will be
there.'''
Eventually, Wilkens' words came true. The Cavaliers won their final
six games of the year, and 17 of their last 23, and go into the playoffs
healthy, a marked change from last year when Price, Nance and Daugherty
were hurting.
``This year we are healthier, so you have to feel better,'' Nance
said. ``We're a good team when we're healthy.''
The Cavaliers won't have the home-court advantage, but they found
out last year that playing more games at home in the playoffs doesn't
always lead to a series victory. Chicago eliminated Cleveland in five
games last year, and the Cavs, who won 57 games last season, have won
only one playoff series in their 20-year history.
``They're a dangerous team,'' New York coach Stu Jackson said of
the Cavs. ``This is still one of the better teams in the league and I
tell you, it's a tough draw if you're drawing them for the seventh seed.
I like their talent.''
Cleveland turned its season around in Milwaukee on March 11. The
Cavs went into that game with six straight losses, and were coming off a
145-105 defeat at Golden State, a performance that so angered Wilkens he
accused his club of quitting.
But the Cavs regrouped, beat the Bucks 107-96, and have been on a
roll ever since.
``We're playing like I'd like us to play,'' Wilkens said. ``We're
aggressive, we're moving the ball real well. There's no question (the
team is playing its best ball of the season). We've had stretches where
we've won five games in a row, but this is the best stretch in that the
games meant something and we had to go out on the road and do it.''
The Cavs split the season series with Philadelphia, winning once at
home and once on the road. Now that the club is healthy, winning a
series from the Atlantic Division champions is not such a far-fetched
idea.
``We've got a good thing going for us right now,'' said guard Craig
Ehlo. ``It's just amazing how things can change so fast.''

Subject: There's more to Philly than Charles Barkley
Date: 24 Apr 90 19:57:35 GMT

RICHFIELD, Ohio (UPI) -- Charles Barkley gets most of the attention,
and rightfully so.
He's explosive on the court with a flair for the dramatic, loves to
exchange insults with fans, speaks his mind to reporters and even keeps
NBA Commissioner David Stern busy by making side bets with his buddy
Mark Jackson or fighting with the Detroit Pistons.
Just his shaved head and his nickname, the ``Round Mound of
Rebound,'' would be enough to generate a good deal of publicity even if
Barkley were the reticent type, which he most definitely is not.
But as the Cavaliers prepare for their best-of-five playoff series
with Philadelphia that begins Thursday in the Spectrum, they see a lot
more to the Atlantic Division champion 76ers than Barkley.
``My game plan is that we go in and win the game,'' Cleveland coach
Lenny Wilkens said Tuesday when asked how he planned to keep Barkley
under control.
``I think (the media) are too focused on how we're going to stop
one guy. I think the primary purpose is to win the game and give good
help when we can, whether it's through a double team or trap or
whatever. We'll try to employ all those things that we're good at.''
In four games against Cleveland, Barkley averaged 24 points, 9.5
rebounds, and 4.5 steals per contest. Heresy Hawkins averaged 19.5
points per game against Cleveland while Ron Anderson averaged 14.3
points and Mike Gminski 13.
While the Sixers do have other offensive weapons, specifically
Hawkins and his long-range shooting, keeping Barkley under control is a
major part of any winning game plan for Philadelphia opponents. No one
Cavalier will have the job of guarding Barkley alone, but small forward
Winston Bennett will start off the game on Barkley, and get help from
his teammates whenever possible.
``Barkley is so deceptively quick for his size,'' said Bennett, a
rookie from Kentucky. ``He has the great jumping ability, the great
bounce off the floor. So any time you've got a guy that athletically
talented he presents a lot of problems.
``He can handle the ball out on the perimeter. When he's doubled,
he can see the open man. He has the quickness and moves to take you to
the hole or shoot the jumper. As you can tell, he presents a world of
problems.''
Barkley causes much of his problems on the offensive boards, where
he is a master of anticipation and position. Whenever another
Philadelphia player takes a shot, a Cavalier will have to get his body
between Barkley and the basket.
``He's one of the best rebounders in the league,'' Bennett said.
``I'm really going to have to focus myself on keeping him off the boards
at all times.''
While Bennett is focusing on Barkley, and the thought of guarding
him for up to five straight games has to bring headaches to any NBA
player, he echoes Wilkens' belief that the rest of the Cavaliers have to
concentrate on their assignments and not let Barkley's actions dictate
their actions.
``I don't think that the whole team has to be conscious of one
guy,'' Bennett said, ``because we each individually have to contain our
own man. If we lose our guy, hopefully somebody will be there to help
us.''

So much for all those fools who claimed that trading a 1st round

Come on....Lenny must go??? No, I don't think so! I think the
main problem for the two Cavs loses are caused by a very hiper
Ehlo! The guy is acting like a crazy man. Does he think he has
to do it all when he is in the game? He has been throwing the
ball to the other team, missing wide open shots, over reacting...
its been discusting! I want to know where all the 3 pointers
have gone...? I still think the Cavs will come together at home
and win the next three. They will go to Phili knowing they can
beat them, after winning two at home, and take comand down there.

How can a team lose a game due to one player you ask???

Well, If this one player gets the ball, say 25 times durring the
game......he takes 13-15 shots at the basket and misses all but
3...there goes over twenty points....lets say he usually only makes
50% of his shots...thats 10 points...but, most of his shots come
from the 3 point line...that makes alot of difference. total of
30 points lost, if he usually makes 50% = 15 points. Now this
same player turns the ball over to the other team 5 to 10 times
durring the game, lets add this up. loses the ball 5 times to the
other team, total possible 10-15 points, if the other team makes
50% of them its 5-8 points. Its very easy to see how one player
can loses the game for his team!

Cleveland lost both games by what.......6 points apiece?

Take Ehlo out of the picture and you get a win!

Wilkens is an excellent coach and Ehlo is a solid starting guard.

Ehlo has a couple of bad games so he should be tossed? Where would
the Sixers be if they used this theory on Hersey Hawkins last year
when he stunk up the place in the playoffs.

Give Ehlo a break! He's no Hersey Hawkins, but he's not stiff (John
    Bagley, DJ) either.

Cleveland isn't winning because they don't have the desire. Last
game they were down by 5-7 points with 2 minutes to go. The pass
goes into Daugherty and he drops it. While Sixers are diving on the
floor to get the ball, Daugherty and the rest of the Cavs are reaching
for it from a standing position. Gminski dives to the ground to take
it. With the exception of Mark Price and John Williams, the team lacks
hustle and desire. Nance is playing at about 75% and Ferry is not
signed (BTW, Harper is watching the playoffs at home on TV).

I expect Cleveland to come out fired up for this home game and beat
the Sixers by 5-10 points. I'll have to wait to see what their
attitude is after the game to fairly evaulate their chances in
    game 4.

    	What a game!!!

Do ya wanta play physical ball??? Ok, take the TREE!!!

Great game played by the Cavs last night! Ehlo comes through...
finally. Phili came out and tried to bully the Cavs, but, Cleveland
takes none of it! Turnning point in the game.....third quarter,
Barkley goes in for a dunk, but, Ehlo shoves the ball right in his
face...the crowd goes crazy! The Cavs would not let anyone in the
paint...if they went to the paint...they got smashed...on the ground.
IN YOUR FACE!!! Cavs defense played a great game...double teaming
Barkley then picking up the open man off the double team...they
were moveing around like I've never seen them do before. On Ehlo's
IN YOUR FACE block of Barkley's shot, Barkley goes to the line and
starts smileing, he was shook up! Jim Chones said so! After this,
Barkley tries to bring the team back but everytime he gets the ball
the Cavs were all over him, beating him up, physically taking him
out of the game. Barkley was frustrated and then he starts fouling
anyone with the ball. Phili takes him out of the game when he get
a T. The fourth quarter was all 2nd string Cleveland. Bring in
the TREE and Dudley. More physical activity. They would not let
anyone get the easy shot. What a difference this game was!

I wonder what happened to Barkley and Brooks last night....they
looked like they had taken downers....at least compared to the last
    game.

Officiating...they let alot of things go, both for Cleveland
and against. I would have still thrown out a couple of Phili players
for major fouls. Price was just hit outright, lucky the benches
didn't clear. Barley was lucky the crowd didn't rush the floor
for the way he was acting early on in the game.

3 pointers...Ehlo hit a couple of big ones. Passes from the
double team on Daugherty set him up. Phili couldn't cover it at
    all!

See, one player makes a big differnece...Ehlo was under control!
He didn't turn the ball over once! He wasn't the only one though...
7 Cleveland players scored in the double figures. Cheaves had a
great game...driving in the paint...this guy doesn't care who is
in his way. The time was right for him in this game. Bennett was
outstanding...comming out of no where to dunk the ball, and picking
up big rebounds. The Cavs ruled the boards. Everyone on the Cleveland
    roster scored points.

I see the Cavs totally dismantling Phili on Thursday...Phili
will go home thinking that they have no chance at willing at home.
    The Cavs will dominate!!!

    	     o

When did Price get hit? Was this before or after he threw a punch at
Thorton? I would assume that Stern will be suspending Price for the
next game in the game, and that should hurt the Cavs a bit. The Cavs
did set the tempo early, knocking Sixers down, not letting anybody get
a shot up without hitting them, crashing to the boards no matter who
was in the way. The refs let it all go by and as a result very nearly
lost control of the game. Jimmy Lynam did the smart thing by pulling
the starters out (I hope Stern doesn't fine the Sixers for that)
becauser there was absolutely no way the Sixers could win this game.
Ehlo played out of his mind (I guess now he should be tested for drugs)
and the whole thing got out of hand

Anyway, it doesn't matter how much you lose by, it still only counts as
one loss. Thursday night will be different. If we can get some order to
the game in the 1st quarter, maybe the Sixers will be allowed to play
their game in the paint and have a shot at finishing it off.

Where will Ehlo a starting guard be when Ferry plays for Cleveland
next year? Ferry is a forward/center. My understanding is the
Cavs will use the following line-up:

    C Daugherty
    F Nance
F Ferry Williams coming off the bench to fill all 3 front
                   court positions
    G Ehlo
    G Price
Hopefully Chevious can become a player with a training
camp under his belt. I also think they'll try and
switch Bennett and/or Brown to the swing G/F position.

The Cavs should deal Nance. Do it now, while he's still worth
something. With the way Hot Rod has developed, I believe Nance is
expendable. Maybe they can get a decent shooting guard for him (with
speed please), and place Ehlo back on the bench where he belongs.

    This would make the line-up:

    C Duagherty
    PF Hot Rod
    SF Ferry
    PG Price
    SG ????

This will allow Ehlo to come of the bench to play either guard or small
forward position. Add Benette and Kerr off the bench and you've got a
formittable squad, assuming they can get a decent guard in the Nance
deal. I'm afraid if they wait another year, though, Nance won't be
worth too much. I don't know if he'll ever be 100% again.

that KJ didn't develop into the player he is until after the trade. In
his first year with Cleveland he was un-impressive.

Nance can still contribute, my point was that he has been less than

with the exception of this latest stint he was among the steadiest
players. High on the list for current iron man.

also talk about injury prone -- consider cartwright. He had more
injury stints then I'd like to remember. No question cartwright for
oakley was a bad deal. The bulls were trading out of desperation.

    The Cavs win.........

Not much to say about this game.....it was pretty much like the
    last.

The first play of the game said everything...
Barkley goes for the dunk.......Ehlo slams the ball
    			IN HIS FACE
for the foul.....the crowd goes wild.....Barkley misses
    	both shots at the line.

This was another *very* physical game! You can see the
frustration by the way the Phily players acted durring the
game. The Cavs stoped the Phily big men in the paint but
Dewight and Hawkins took their shots. Daugherty had a field
day and Barkley showed his frustration by intentionally giving
Brad both forearms at his neck early in the fourth. You should
have seen Barkley's face. 8-) Then practically on the next
play, Ehlo goes in alone for the dunk and again, Barkley floors
him.....another intentional foul. He should have been thrown
out of the game! Barley wasn't the only one either.....there
were flagerent fouls by Hawkins, Mahorn and Diwight. Diwight
was thrown out of the game for pushing around Price.
Bennett had another great game, comming out of nowhere to
get the tap, get the dunk, get the rebound....He has made a big
difference in the last two games. He has played Barkley well!
Price was hot the whole night....driving to the basket only
to give the ball to Hot Rod, Tree, Brad, etc.....18 assists for
    the game!
Ehlo did not have a good night, but, he didn't hurt the team
with his bad shooting and he also didn't throw the ball away.
Because of game 3 however, he had to be reconed with and therefore,
    the other guys were open.
Hot Rod had some good jumpers.....*big* baskets, when they
    really needed them.
Daugherty....the best game of his carrier...great soft touch
    baskets...some dunks...great passing.
Tree Rollins played another good game not allowing anyone in
the paint, getting the big rebound, creating the turnover.
    	Cheveous played a good game....one thing though....I don't
understand why he has to open his mouth so wide when foul shooting.
He has some major cavities! He is a driver...not afraid of anyone.
Nance played probibly his best game of the playoffs...blocking
shots, getting the baskets when they counted, in the paint.

Game 5 will be something to see, thats for sure. Barkley is
no good away from home! Phily could have been in the game if not
for all their missed open shots...It could have been alot closer.
The game in Phily will be up for grabs. If the Cavs can come out
early and get a big lead, don't look for Phily to come back. The
Cavs have figured them out....stop Barkley from getting in the
paint and make them shoot the foul shots...no three pointers. The
Cavs defense must play the way they have the last two games.

             o
    	Go CAVS!

Diwight I think is Johnny Dawkins. He got 2 ts called on him during the
game. The first was on a drive down the lane where he was hit three
times, missed the shot (what a shock), and got no call. He said
something to the official and got an instantaneous T. The second was
after a hard foul by Nance (I think) and Johnny threw an elbow. (I'm
tempted to say like Mark Price did in games 2 and 3, but I won't).

The Sixers were frustrated for sure. The outside shots weren't falling
and when the drove to the hoop, they got banged big time with very
liitle whistle action from the refs. If that happens again Saturday,
there's no way the Sixers will win.

Interesting note to the game. There was a moving pick called. The only
shock was that it was one of the more stationary picks that was set. Of
course it was on Mahorn. Now, if the could ony watch Richfield's big
    guys that close.

How about that Ehlo. During the first period, he drives down lane and
elbows Ron Anderson in the head, opening a wound that takes six
stitches to close. No problem, no foul.

Also, on the opening sequence, Ehlo didn't stuff Barkley's shot. What
he did was rap his arms around Charles to prevent the slam, he wasn't
even trying for ball. He almost got planted into the basket support
    when he bounced off Charles.

But Hal, don't let any facts get in the way of a good story. ;*)

| | Gee Hal, talk to me about moving picks going both ways. The next time
Richfield sets a stationary pick, it will be the first. If they used
the same standards they use with Mahorn on Daugherty, Nance, Bennet,
and Williams, those folks would be gone by halftime.

BTW- Reread my reply. I never said the calls didn't go both way. I
said the Sixers didn't get the calls in the paint. In the 3rd quarter,
Charles stopped going inside because he was getting hammered, missing
the shot, and not getting a foul called. It just wasn't smart
basketball for him to continue to go inside. At that point, if the
outside shots were falling, I think the Sixers could have won. But they
all suffered from Ehlo's Philadelphia Syndrome and threw up some
    miserable shots.

Also, I think if the calls go the same "both ways" for the home team on
Saturday, you'll be in here Monday crying the blues about the end of
    the Richfield Cavaliers season.

happens in game five, you bet I'm worried. You would have to be an
idiot or a fool not to be (do either of these apply to you). By the
same token, if I was a Richfield fan (and I thank my lucky stars I'm

benefit from the whistles. I hope that trend holds out into game 5, and
the NBA doesn't schedule some neutral officials or something like that.

I think either team could win, and every little edge in momentum is
important, and to say a call here or a call there doesn't affect what

the Cavs have virtually no chance to win the series and that the

| | Hal, if you get a chance during tomorrow's game watch the Philly bench
during timeouts. The trainer has two or three (I can't remember which)
crack pipes that look like water bottles. He then puts a cool, wet,
white towel over the player's head (usually Barkley) while the player
sits there and puffs away. Then the player more often than not, plays
out of control for the next 10 minutes or so.

They can't do this in Cleveland because the crack isn't as available

This was a terible game! Barkley sucks!!! He should have
been thrown out of the game on two occasions! First...when
Mark Price was going in for the lay-up...Barkley comes in from
the side and slams Mark in the side of the face with his forearms.
I saw this replay several times...I think they only showed in
once on CBS...its no wonder why... Barkley should have been
tossed from the game for this kind of play...there was no need
to foul anyone like that! Then, to beat all, he didn't even
get called for the foul! Later in the game....he hits Ehlo.
I thought that this kind play warrents ejection...? Ehlo was
down for the count. Barkley is a jerk! I said JERK!!!
After seeing the way he played in this game, I have a mind
to write the commissioner and tell him how I feel. Is this what
we want our kids to do when they play the game??? No, I don't
think so! If this is what the game has come to...then I won't

    wern't fouls at all.
I was able to watch a couple of post game interviews and was

Yep, the Cavs go home, but, I hope Phily gets their just

bricks in his shoes! What do you say to this game Paul??? I
say, trade him! Get some new blood in the line up.
On the Ohio Sports Channel, the talk is that Danny Farry will

Well, for one thing....when I say IN YOUR FACE....I mean the
ball....not, a fist! When Cleveland fouled them, it wasn't a
foul that could really hurt anyone....just a foul that stops the
ball....hold onto the ball, not smack the guy in the face or hit
him in the balls...!!!!! Get the point???

As far as the bulls go.........I think I would rather see
Phily play Detroit and see how they like to get hit!
I haven't seen too much Detroit play but from what I'm told...
they play just like Phily. Again, this type of play should not
be aloud in the NBA! There are alot of kids out there watching
    this game.

Lets try not to judge all Cleveland Sports fans by the raving of one
    man!

That said, the Cavs simply got beat saturday. Another masterful
coaching job by Lenny. The inside game wasn't clicking, so what do
they continue to do.. what else, try to go inside. They never kicked
the ball back outside for the jumper. I just don't understand how
Lenny failed to adjust the game plan throughout the entire game.

Oh, well.. I can't see how Danny Ferry is going to be the answer, but
we'll have to wait and see. Question, how is it that Brian Shaw has
been signed by the Celts for next year, while Embry refuses to even start
talks with Ferry until their season ends? In my opinion he better get
busy.. and loosen up the purse strings.

I tell it like I see it! Plain and simple! You tell me, or anybody

There is a difference between physical play and just down right
bad play! I'm sorry, I didn't like seeing Price or Ehlo get hit
like that! It got me very upset!!! If you think it is ok to play
like that, then come here and let me hit you in the face and let
me know how you feel afterward! So, tell me Jeff, you think its
ok? No, I don't think so. I never said that Cleveland should have
won the game. I did however say that I thought Ehlo played like
crap. You however think Lenny should be fired...I don't! Cleveland
just wasn't making their shots...they took plenty of shots from
outside, but, none of them went in. When the ball doesn't go in,
you don't get points! I do think that if Barkley was watched closer
and the T's called, it may have brought back the spark! They did
come back to within 2 at one point in the game, but didn't respond
when Phily made the shots.....main problem.....bad passing by Hot
Rod....worse than that was the poor coverage by Ehlo. I still say
    get read of him!

The only one that I know of that got hurt during the series was Ron
Anderson of the 76ers. He got elbowed in the head by Ehlo and needed
    six stiches.

Barley's foul on Ehlo was probably excessive, but I don't think he was
trying to hurt him. On the Price foul, little Markie was fouled by
another Sixer first which pushed him into Sir Charles. Barkley was just
trying to make sure that Price didn't get the shot off.

If the way Barkley plays is a reflection on Philadelphia, I don't think
that's so bad. Go 110% all the time. However, I think your raving might

    Hal,

I didn't see Sir Charles do anything to warrant a T. The foul on Ehlo
was a hard foul, but thats the story in the NBA this year big deal.

As Dennis said, Charles consistently gives 110% when he plays. He's
only 6' 6" but he consistenly beats up the competition on the boards.
It's called DESIRE (well, the wide body helps too). This DESIRE is
something that was lacking on the Cavs during all 3 games in Philly.
They have noone to blame but themselves, period. They came out flat,
made mistakes, and got blown away. End of story, end of season.

Now is the time to make changes.. I hope Embry gets busy.

The Cavs do not take cheap shots in the game. They bring in the

way he gets them is very questionable to me too. He runs then
turns his back on you, and puts all his force into you forceing
you out. No fouls called. Barkley was getting beat when he
played defense, usually only on the first shot. Don't think

Subject: Williams says his future uncertain
Date: 8 May 90 19:46:49 GMT

AKRON, Ohio (UPI) -- Until the last two months of the season,
Cleveland forward John ``Hot Rod'' Williams never doubted that he would
re-sign with the Cavaliers.
Now, however, the restricted free agent seriously questions whether
he'll ever play for the Cavaliers again. Williams, the team's best
forward who played in all 82 games this year, averaged 16.8 points, 8.1
rebounds and 2.04 blocks per game. He has asked the NBA to declare him
an unrestricted free agent, which would mean the Cavs would not have the
right to match any offer the four-year veteran from Tulane would
receive.
He claims that since he was paid by Cleveland while sitting out the
1985-86 season while being cleared of wrongdoing in the Tulane
point-shaving scandal, he actually is a five-year veteran. A hearing
will be held June 10 to decide Williams' status.
``I don't know where I'll be next year,'' Williams told the Akron
Beacon Journal. ``I thought I'd be signed by now. I remember when I
first walked into (the Cleveland lockerroom) I thought I'd spend my
whole career with the Cavaliers. But now, I can't be sure of anything.''
Williams and agent Mark Bartelstein asked for a 5-year, $10.5
million contract in January, and the Cavs agreed to most of the terms in
March. But Williams and his agent had wanted to wrap up the deal before
the All-Star break in mid-February and decided to test the free agent
market.
``My wife wants to stay here,'' Williams said. ``We have a nice
house and people have been great to us. But no matter if I'm restricted
or unrestricted, I'm in a once-in-a-lifetime bargaining position. If I
have to leave, I'll leave. You have to make money while you can because
no one is going to pay John Williams after he can't play ball any
more.''
Williams knows he can top the Cavs' offer as a free agent, whether
restricted or unrestricted. Jon Koncak received $13.2 million for
signing a 6-year contract with Atlanta last year, and Sam Bowie signed
with New Jersey for $13.5 million over five years. Neither is close to
being the productive, dependable player Williams is.
``The Cavs' offer was great,'' he said. ``Even after I started
playing pro ball, I never expected to make that kind of money. But I
look around at what Jon Koncak got to re-sign with Atlanta and Sam Bowie
got from New Jersey and I want to see what I'm worth.''
In the playoffs, Williams averaged 19 points and 9.2 rebounds while
shooting 56 percent from the floor. As the Cavaliers sixth man,
Williams, 6-foot-11, can play all three front court positions.
``Some people have said that my agent is telling me what to do and
that he controls me,'' Williams said. ``Well, he is there to talk
business for me, but no one makes a decision for John Williams but John
Williams. Mark was my agent even before the Cavs took me, so I have to
be loyal to him, too.
``In the end, I'm making my own decision. If other teams want to
talk to me, I'll listen. If we can work out a deal with the Cavs, that
would be great. But I have no idea what will happen.''

been pulling for him. Glad he's developed into a blue-chipper, a
pretty good sign he's got his head on straight. Go for the bucks, Hot
    Rod!

The SI article really pointed out the hypocrisy of "amatuer" athletics
and the near-impossible situation of a kid like Williams. He was from
intense poverty - basically had nothing growing up. ("Nothing" might
include things like dinner, for example.) Luckily he could play hoops
and got the opportunity to go to Tulane, where he helped bring in lots
of bucks for the university, all the while he and his family remaining
just as poor. (Can you say "exploitation"? I knew you could ...)

Anyways I'm not sure he was ever implicated in the point-shaving thing,
but it's not hard to imagine how some bookie could offer him more money
than he probably ever knew existed in return for missing a foul shot
    or 2.

Yet another example of why these kids should be paid over-the-table.

Doug, I think dropping DJ and Paxton would do it. DJ made 1.3 mil
this year and Paxton is suppose to make around 800K next year so
there's almost enough money between those two. Bagley has a quaranteed
500K coming next year no matter what. I don't know if you cut a player
with a quaranteed contract whether his salary still counts against
the cap or not. Perhaps someone else does? Also the cap goes up every
year so there might be another million there to play with....

    Ferry signs.

    Estimated $2.5 million per year.

What does this mean for Hot Rod Williams who was offered $8.0 million
for 4 years and rejected it. He claims he's an unrestricted free
agent, the Cavs and league believe he is a restricted free agent. My
guess is that he'll be offered a contract similar to Ferry's.

The Cavs' lawyers already have submitted briefs to the arbitrator
who will decided whether or not Joh "Hot Rod" Williams becomes an
unrestricted free agent. The case will be heard June 11 and is,
as one observer puts it, "the most important date on the Cavs' 1990-91

USA today listed a possible deal between the Cavs and the Lakers...

Scott and Green for Ehlo and Williams.

I'd have to look at it a little closer to see if I think its a good
move for the Cavs, but if it is on the table, I bet Embry will take
it. If LA is the team pushing the deal, Cleveland should hold out
    for more.

This is a tough one to call. Williams is certainly a better offensive
player than Green, and he also blocks a lot more shots than A.C.
On the other hand, Scott and Ehlo are the same age. Scott had his
worst season, due to lingering effects of his hamstring injury, and
Ehlo had his best season, and Scott was still slightly better in the
scoring department. I think the chances are pretty good that Scott
can come back to something approximating his pre-injury performance
next season, but I'm not so sure that Ehlo is ever going to get much
better than he is right now. Yup, tough decision indeed.

I don't concur with this. One view is that Scott is declining.
Another is that he had an off year, and since he's in the 28-29 years
old range, should have a number of good years left in him. Ehlo's
history is one of an overachiever. His peak is considerably less than
Scott's, and if as I suppose, Scott bounces back, Ehlo is the much
    more easily replacable commodity.

not bad considering they've already played 5 road games...

    5-3 overall (3-0 H, 2-3 R)

The beat Indiana at home last night and Atlanta in Atlanta on
Tuesday. Its nice to beat other division foes.

    Cavs dump Bucks at Richfield 99-97 to move to 6-3 (4-0 H, 2-3 R).
At the current home and road pace, the Cavs would finish 57-25.

I don't expect that, but I do expect 50 wins minimum... anything
    else is gravy.

the NBA this year... they have more back-to-back games than any team
    in the league.

That's exactly what happened. He was running along the baseline
trying to save a ball that was going out of bounds and ran into
the scorers table. To have anything that is unnecessary planted
solidly in the ground, that close to the playing court is stupid.
Chicago is looking at having their signs redesigned. I guess they
don't want Jordan to have the same type of injury. The sad part
about it is that Price plays 100% all of the time... if he was
less agressive, more passive, like alot of the players making the
big bucks, the injury would have never occurred.

The Cavs resigned Darnell Valentine, who they'd released last
year to replace Price. Without Price, the Cavs will be lucky
to win 40 games... (revised from my 50+ win predicition).
    OUCH!

The hapless Cavs (sans Price and Hot Rod) pummelled the overrated
Lakers last night 84-74. The MIGHTY Lakers managed 29 2nd half
points. Cleveland made its move when it was trailing 57-51 in the
3rd period outscoring the 2nd best team in LA by a 33-17 margin the
rest of the way.
The Lakers better trade Magic and Worthy (the only two good players
they've got) for draft picks and start rebuilding... this team is
going nowhere without a major overhaul.
I'm sure glad the Cavs didn't make the Williams + Ehlo for Scott +
Green deal that was making its rounds through the media in the
fall. Green and Scott are washed up stiffs.

No, just commenting on the sad state of the Lakers... maybe you have an
excuse to be a fan, but Doc will be off the bandwagon when they hit
bottom. He doesn't ever have much to say about his home team (the
warriors), he's too busy doing PR for the Rockets, Lakers, Bulls,
    Sixers, etc,...

The Lakers might as well pack it in right now... they're aging and
they won't get much better with all of those great draft picks they've
made in the last couple of years. Trade Magic and Worthy and maybe
    you'll get a early 2nd round pick...
