    Is there any software (prefer shareware) that lets you edit/cut .avi
    and .mov files? Like, cut and splice?

|     Yup, PP7 is quite handy at slicing and dicing video - as long as you 
    don't mind the audio track getting lost along the way...
    
    Not sure I understand why it happens, but PP7 even warns me that "the
    file length has changed and the audio synchronization will be lost" (or
    words to that effect)...

|     "Personal AVI Editor" does this for AVI files (only). I do not have it.
    It is limited to 30 days use. An Alta Vista Search should throw up a
    variety of locations.
