5294.0. "UNABLE TRANSLATE PORT DEVICE TYPE While remote boot" by GIDDAY::SHCHIU () Wed Apr 23 1997 02:59

    axp/vms upg from v6.1 to v6.2-1h2

    DEfta ( fddi card ) on dec 3000-500 Satellite node.

    alpha 4000-620 boot node with fddi card.

    the DEC 3000-500 has been remotely booting fine from axp 4000 node
    under VMS V6.1. and when boot node upgrade vms, all satellite nodes
    firmware was upg to v5.53 ( cdrom version v3.5 ).

    and other satelite like Axp 3000-800, axp 3000-6001 has no
    problem to remotely boot , except this dec 3000-500.

    the console message :

    audit_load_done
    unable to translate port device type

    the turbuchannel upg also been done.

    still no luck, down grade firmware on the 3500, no change .

    >>> boot -fl 0,30009

    IPB-I-BOOTDEV , DETERMMINING BOOT DEVICE  <<<<<
    UNABLE TRANSLATE PORT DEVICE TYPE <<<<<

    get user to check the boot device found
    it set to "0 0/esa0"

    and user check all other satellite nodes has the same boot_device
    value.

    I wonder what might have cause the problem ?

    no problem if booting via ethernet .

| 5294.1 | move the fddi card | CSC32::S_DANNEN | Live long and slobber | Wed Apr 23 1997 09:20 | 5 |
| | Try moving the FDDI card out of Tubochannel Slot 0. I think the
    fix for this will be in V3.9 firmware, but I have not worked on
    a system with that installed yet.
