Customer has a cluster of VAX systems running 6.1. Customer would like
to upgrade one machine to 7.1 to test his application before upgrading
all cluster members. Since the cluster compatibility kit is for 6.2
versions only, does this mean that 6.1 cannot run in a mixed version
cluster with 7.1? Cluster SPD does not list 6.1 under migration
support but says that other versions not listed "may" work. Can I
assume that nothing under 6.2 will work since there is not
compatibility kit for this version?
Thanks,
Karen

I believe the cover letter has "required" in the phrasing... You will want to upgrade the nodes to at least V6.2 if planning to run with a V7.1 system in the same VMScluster -- this compatibility kit keeps the low-level mount processing, as well as other low-level code compatible. Presently, there is no compatibility kit for V6.1, nor for V7.0. And I know of no plans to create a kit for either of these versions. V6.1 systems must be upgraded to V6.2 with the kit, and V7.0 systems must be upgraded to V7.1. (V6.2 was the `expected' `stopping point' for most customers.) | |||||

May "work" also means may "not work". But if they are only interested
in testing their application then they probably won't have any
problems.
I wouldn't try running mixed V6.1/V7.1 nodes as a homogeneous
environment and expect it to work flawlessly. V6.1 was run with
V7.1 and I'm not aware of any serious problems.
The biggest thing that the compatibility kit does is give you V7.1
behavior in several areas. Two being Host Based Shadowing and Mount.
Running V6.1 will leave you with prior behavior which means you
may see some of the problems that have been resolved in V7.1, you
may even see this same problems on the V7.1 nodes.
Bottom line proceed with caution.
