What businesses in town give kids rewards for good report cards?
Like a free kids meal, or whatever?
Sometimes things like that mean more to them than anything parents
can reward with. (Even though it usually ends up costing the parents
for their meal or whatever, the kids like that they earned theirs.)

Blockbuster gives free movie rental(s) for (I think) B average report
cards. It is on a sign on the door.

McKinzey White (sp?) has a summer reading program that rewards children
for books read over the summer. They get a gift certificate and MW is a
great store for chilren...excellent chilren's section (excellent
computer section too.)
Pizza Hut gives children a free Kids Pizza Meal but I can't remember
for what. They also give them a button that they can fill with stickers
for a second level prize.
Mountasia will give children a play free coupon for perfect attendance.
Famtastik Kidz Klub will give discount coupons - if they're in the
mood. 8) They really don't have a policy on this and they don't have
any goal set. We got a ton of them to give away at our school carnival.
There are lots more too. A good place to learn about them is through
your school's PTO/PTA. They get lots of mail on things like this. I
know we (I am president of a local PTO two years running) get a ton of
stuff like this, but due to lack of parent volunteers we can't do
everything we'd like to. There are badges, stickers, pencils, books,
passes, discount coupons, and other freebies available to children and
you are right, they love the feeling that they earned it themselves.
But without parent volunteers the PTO/PTA has to put lots of these
things aside and take on the things that are the most bang for the
buck. Lots of times that means the children miss out. I hope the list
above helps, I hope this paragraph moves you to attend a PTO/PTA
meeting and see what you can do to help all the children in your school
benefit from what you decide to participate in.

Louie's Pizza has been doing this for some time now.
If a kid gets straight A's for the quarter they get a free, small,
2-item pizza and a pitcher of pop. If they get straight A's for the
year they get a family pizza party. We went a couple weeks ago and
they gave our daughter 2 large, 2-item pizzas for the family.
I've found that the help doesn't always know the rules of the program
so you might want to call first and get the scoop from someone who
knows at one of the stores and then go ready to tell the workers the
deal.
Don't forget to take the report card with you...

The Pizza Hut program is basically a reading promotion project that
they have going and is not based on grades.
They set up the program with public, private or homeschools with the
goal of getting the child to reach monthly reading goals. If
they reach that goal they get a coupon for a free personal pan pizza.
When they go in to get their first month's pizza they get a pin and a
sticker for that pin. When the pin is filled up with stickers they
get a final prize. So every month they can earn a pizza and if they
nail all 5 or 6 months they get a special prize.
I think the program is called "Book-it" and if your school does not do
it they can set it up by contacting Pizza Hut and signing up before the
beginning of the school year.
It's a pretty motivating program and I've seen teachers augment it with
classroom contests and activities.
