I've got a chance to get a .22 rifle without a clip. The problem is that
I can't tell what kind of rifle it is.

It's a .22 bolt action, with a very heavy barrel. The name "RANGER" is
stamped on the barrel, and "31" is on the underside of the barrel and
the inside of the stock. It has a Lyman type site.

None of the Mossberg clips fit the action.

    Any help would be appriciated.

    Thanks,

    Bob K.

While Winchester has used the name "Ranger" to designate their
value line, I doubt that'd be what this is. If you can get your
hands on a late-edition of the Blue Book of Gun Values, there's
a section (in the back as I recall) about cross-referencing no-name
22 rifles. Most useful in determining who made the various JC Higgens
and/or Ted Williams models, there may be something there that will
help. Another good book for this type of thing is the Gun Parts
catalog; lots of cross-reference there. You may even want to simply
call Gun Parts and tell them you are looking for a magazine for
this rifle; describe it as you have done here....they might just
recognize the thing and have what you want.

Sound suspiciously like the .22 rifle my father has at home (given
to him by a friend). It was an old Mossberg "training rifle" used by
the Army (no clip in this one either). That's all the info we ever were
    able to discern.
