Well, I fulfilled another long-time dream this weekend -- I got to shoot an H&K
MP5-SD!

The MP5 is the Heckler & Koch's (sp?) 9mm full auto machine gun (collapsible
stock) and the -SD variant is the suppressed version.  We all made a point of
taking off our hearing protection for the first burst.  It sounds like an IBM
Selectric typewriter with a key held down; you can hear the bolt slap and boy,
can you *really* hear the ricochets (the guy shooting wasn't doing a very good
job of keeping the bullets off the floor of the berm, but there's a mountain
behind the range and it's all "private" land, so no problem).

The only problem I have with the MP5-SD is that it's way-cooler than my wildest
expectations, and now I want one but civilian cost I'd guess is about $8k, so
it's a bit outta my league...  If you ever get a chance to shoot one of these,
drop everything and do it!

I also got to try an MP5-K (H&K's machine pistol), which is a really neat little
(and I do mean little) package.  Nice on three round burst, and still
controllable (but only with some concentration) on full-auto.  Also shot a
grease gun; I'm kinda disappointed that I bought the MAC-10 years ago because
the grease gun has a much better rate of fire than the MAC; somewhere in the 450
to 600 RPM range.

Keeping my fingers crossed -- I might get to try out another toy this evening;
if so I'll continue tomorrow.

    	Boy, does that bring back memories. I qualified "expert" some 40
    years ago with one of those things, when Uncle was paying for the ammo
    and I was a young 951.10. Designed and built by pumbers, I believe.

    In the peacetime army the Submachinegun Cal45 M3A1 ("GREASEGUN") had
    one endearing trait.  You could unscrew the barrel and dump out the
    bolt, guide rods and springs assembly, and screw the barrel back on.
    That reduced the weight from 9+ pounds to around 4 - lighter than the
    carbine.  And officers never thought to check behind the shut door of
    the boltcover.  Phil
