Can anyone help identify the type of "wild rose" that you usually
see lining houses / roads at the Cape and in Maine. I have seen
such roses at the entrance to the Stow Shopping Plaza and would like
to try them at my new house.
Do they have any success growing away from the ocean climate?

They grow great around here (I live in Shrewsbury).
In fact, they will quickly spread into a hedge row if you
allow them to.
My father mentioned that some folks will install barriers
around them in the soil when they don't want them to
spread. We planted two, and the roots send off shoots
that come up a foot or so away from the base plant. Great
if you want a hedge affect, but if not, you may want to think
of some way to block the roots between plants.

Note that their penchant for sending subterranean shoots can prove
vexing for your neighbors. My parents' place at the beach is subjected
to the unwanted shoots of the neighbors' beach roses. They are
incredibly invasive. If you aren't careful, they can take over your
whole yard.

Best barriers I know of are plastic down 12 inches, at least. This has
kept a comfrey (among the more invasive runner plants) under control at
my house. The neighbor ignored my advice and has made the major mistak
of rototilling hers. Every rootlet is now sending up shoots.
The barriers work for mints as well.
If you want a larger plant, use a bigger thing than my 5 gallon buckets
with the bottome cut out.
