    	Just read through this string...

Last week I noticed alternating 1.5-2 inch holes about 3 inches
from my stone wall (on the high side of a retaining wall).

There were lots of holes, each a little over a foot apart.

There's no raised ground around them.

Any guesses as to what might be causing these ? If it's
chipmunks, I wouldn't be too upset. If it's snakes, that's
    	another story :-/

| | If it's chipmunks, you WILL mind as soon as you try to plant something
along there! They are also little thieves - they'll steal anything
they can carry off incuding the biggest, ripest strawberries. Grrr!
But they are awful cute to watch. They tend to make lots of holes, too.
I have twisted my ankle while walking over one of their major
underground intersections. The ground gives way very easily.

If it's snakes, you'll be able to see them sunning themselves on the
rocks in about 1 week. They love stone walls - nice and warm.
Funny story - I was working in my garden and wondered why I left my
dog's black and white nylon leash all rolled up in a circular pattern
in the garden. I reached down to pick it up, and it slithered away.
I'm sure you heard me scream that day, all the way over to your house!
    Sarah

| | I'd vastly prefer snakes to rodents. In fact, with enough of the
former, you don't have to worry about the latter.

Yabbut, the stone wall is supposed to have "party appeal"
as well as serving as a retaining wall. You know, "Hey,
lets hang out on the wall!"

Kinda loses something when you have to say, "Hey, lets
go hang out with the snakes on the wall!"

On a more serious note - these holes appear to have been made
    	over the winter.

Does that stack the odds in any way ?

| | Well, consider that snakes are cold blooded animals. That pretty much
eliminates them as having possibly created these holes.

    And re: party appeal

"Let's go hang out on the wall. Mebbe we can find some snakes!"

    "Cool!" :-)

Aw, you're just saying that so I'll invite you to our next
    	party ;-)

RE: snakes, thanks - that's what I thought...
