As I read that note, it says that you have to use the correct driver.
We have a lot of LN17's running on Alpha's (NT V3.51, but not 2100's),
and serving queues for Windows 95, but I am also able to access the
queues from NT V4.0 or NT V3.51 running on Intel.
The trick here, I think, is that an NT "client" will use the driver
installed on "server". But Alpha and NT have different drivers, so
that won't work if the client is Intel and the server is Alpha (or vice
versa).
On the Alpha server, what I always do with the first printer of a given
type, e.g., an LN17, is to install with the proper driver, then go back
to the "driver" window, select "Other", and point to a network
directory that has the Intel kit, and install the same driver (LN17 ps)
from that list. That way an Intel box can also access the queues.
Apparently, the Alpha box will continue to use the Alpha drivers, but
the Intel will correctly select its drivers on the Alpha server. We
have one server that is an Intel, and I just reverse the process there.
Somebody told me to do this for each printer, but it is a little
tedious, and I have found that it isn't necessary. I haven't tried
installing the NT V4.0 drivers on the V3.51 system; I just installed
them on my V4.0 system.
BTW, you need the correct driver installed whether you are printing via
a server or just trying to manage the queue remotely.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I think what you telling me is
that when I print from my desktop (Intel) to a queue on a NT server (in
this case Alpha), the print driver that processes the output file is
the driver on the server, not the driver on my desktop. And the problem
is that input to the Alpha print driver from a Intel box will not work.
What has to happen is to tell the Alpha to use a Intel driver for the
printer to work with Intel clients. I asume that for the Intel driver I
can use the 95 driver shipped with the printer?

architecture's printer driver on the server!
One can have, for instance, an AlphaServer running NT 4.0 with the
print drivers for NT Intel 4.0, NT Intel 3.51, NT Alpha 3.51, and
Windows 95.
It can be tricky to get it done, but it is generally possible...except
with the LSR2000 apparently.
