7059.0. "DCPS and the Parallel Ports on AXP Systems" by VAXSPO::MOREY (Life, adventure without survivors) Mon Jan 27 1997 12:38

    	Hi,

    	I have a customer using an AlphaServer 400 4/233 w/ OpenVMS 6.2-1H3
and a DCPS V1.3. He connected a printer in the parallel port of the
server (LRA0:) and he can print some data when he uses the command:

    	$ COPY filename LRA0:

But when he uses a DCPS to create a queue to use the print he gets
    this error:

    %DCPS-W-NOT_READY, Printer is not ready
    -SYSTEM-F-IVDEVNAM, invalid device name
-DCPS-I-JOB_ID, for job DEL (queue CPD1, entry 4) on CPD1

I read the notes about DCPS x Parallel Port and I'd like to know if
the version 1.3 do NOT support a parallel ports yet???

If I must use a Terminal Server to connect my printer, a Epson Printer
could be a problem (Model FX 2170) to use a DCPS???

Anybody have a documentation to install/configure a HP Laser on a
network?? The customer wants to have a DCPS queue to point to this
    laser.

    	Thanks in advance,

| | Is the parallel port on the Alphaserver bidirectional?
DCPS requires a bidirectional connection to communicate with the printer.
The same restriction applies to the printer - it must have a bidirectional
parallel port, and (of course) it must be in bidirectional mode.

| | DCPS does not support the parallel port on an OpenVMS workstation/system.
If you have a terminal/print server with a bi-directional parallel port,
you can hang the printer off of that [assuming the printer's parallel port
is also bi-di]. However, that means you're using the network to talk with
the printer.
