I would like to edit some entries in the Registry (I want to change all
C:\WINDOWS to D:\WINDOWS as I want to move the directory).

Editing via REGEDIT is too tedious so I would like to export it, edit
    it, import it. Simple really.

The problem is that I don't seem to be able to import the Registry
after exporting it. I keep getting "can't access registry" error.
Just straight import and then export with no changes to the file in
between. Importing it under WINDOWS is OK. But as I need to edit the
Registry in-between the move, I need to import it while under DOS.

    REGEDIT /l:d:\windows\system.dat /r:d\windows\user.dat /c export.reg

where export.reg is the file I used to export the Registry into, should
do the trick. But it doesn't. I tried it here at work, same result. I
ran REGCLN - no problem. Still no joy out of REGEDIT.

Has anyone successfully imported the Registry under DOS with the above
method (or any other way - still under DOS though)?

I may do a straight edit of the Registry - anyone can think of any
specific (rather than "ooh, that's too risky") problems I could
    encounter?

I just had an idea I could run with two WINDOWS directories (MSDOS.SYS
would point to D: and the registry in D: would point to C:) and then I
    could import it under Windows.

    Karel.

| I have successfully used the freebie COA32 utility from PC Magazine (UK) to move applications between disks or directories. Here's an extract from its README. COA32 (Change of Address/32) is a 32-bit Windows version of the popular PC Magazine utility COA, which is for 16-bit Windows. COA32, which runs under Windows 95 and Windows NT 3.51or higher, lets you change the drive or directory of a Windows program without having to reinstall the program. It works by searching for all references to the old path and updating them to reflect the new path. | |||||

| But changing a program's directory is not the same as changing a
directory's drive. Can it do that? I'm not moving a program.

Anyway I've done it all now successfully, the question remains about
the behaviour of Regedit under DOS.
