| 3730.33 | Voltage level mismatch | IOSG::CARLIN | Dick Carlin IOSG, Reading, England | Fri Apr 04 1997 11:40 | 13 |
|  |     A bit of a low-fi question I'm afraid.

    My daughter has an old (but good) Panasonic music centre (SG-4000) and
    a new Panasonic personal CD-Player (SL-S138). We would like to play the
    CDs through the music centre, but the details are as follows:

    CD-Player output is 600 mV 50k
    Music Centre input is 150mV 47k

    So, no impedance mismatch, but is there something simple I can do about
    the voltage level mismatch?

    Dick

| | It looks as if your input is meant for a phonograph turntable, not a
"line-level input". What's worse is that there will be an equalization
curve applied to the input so your CD will sound awful. I have seen
a description of a box designed to make this work, but I expect it's
expensive.
Unless the Music Centre has a separate line-level input, I'd say "forget it".

|  |     Thanks Steve

    Sorry, I forgot to mention that the DIN socket on the back of the music
    centre is marked TAPE Input/Output. I assume it is for connecting a
    better tape deck and the "Input" is for monitoring while recording
    externally.

    Does this alter things?

| | In that case, I have no clue. 150mv is much too low for a line-level input.
The small difference in impedance won't really matter. You might try it
anyway, just keep the volume low on the CD player (assuming it has variable
output) - otherwise, it will overload the input.

| 3730.37 | Tape HEAD inputs, maybe? | SMURF::PBECK | Who put the bop in the hale-de-bop-de-bop? | Mon Apr 07 1997 22:55 | 9 |
| | If it was a really old unit, I might suspect the low-level input
    marked "tape" was for a tape head output (some old reel transports
    didn't have or could bypass their preamp stages). Haven't seen one
    of those in ages, though.

    I agree that there should be no harm in trying it if the source has
    a variable output level ... even overloading the input is more
    likely to clip and distort than actually fry something (but you
    never know; hard clipping can do nasties to tweeters).

    	Use the headphone output instead of the line-level output.
