Hi,
One customer is running old Digital Unix v3.2c with dupatch
DUV32CAS00001-19961217.tar installed.
This week-end he made some maintenance operation on 1 domain, con-
taining 1 fileset.
The domain was 4 disks :
Log disk rz1c and rz9 rz20 and rz28.
He added rz12, then remove rz9. shutdown the system,
Physicaly swap rz9 (replace a RZ29-VA by a RZ29-VW in the internal
storageWorks of the Alpaserver 2100, and then rebooted.
After, he tried to add the new rz9 (after disklabel) and remove rz12
Adding rz9 was successfull.
During the remove operation of rz12, he saw that the output of
showfdmn was corrupt : rz28 was listed 2 times !
one as log disk instead rz1 and one normaly as previous.
The /etc/fdmns/domain_name was correct (links OK) and then tried to
reboot..
It finishes by multiple advfs exception and restauration from the
previous backup....
I saw previous notes about such inconsistency,
Is there specials conditions when it appears ?
Thanks for info,
Manuel.

You mentioned there are two entries for the last vd after removing a disk. Any error messages during the vol removal? What are the multiple AdvFS exceptions you saw? [Posted by WWW Notes gateway]

Hi,
Apparently the customer didn't noticed any error during
addvol/rmvol.
Yes, it was the last vd (rz28) which was duplicated, and rz1
disapears
Summary of operations :
initial add rz12 remove rz9 re-add rz9 remove rz12
rz1 rz1 rz1 rz1 rz1
rz9 rz9 rz12 rz9 rz9
rz20 rz12 rz20 rz12 rz20
rz28 rz20 rz28 rz20 rz28
rz28 rz28
final corrupted output :
rz28 <-- 2 times rz28
rz9
rz20
rz28 <--

| 1041.4 | volume confusion in advfs v3.2c | RUSURE::KATZ | Fri Apr 25 1997 11:31 | 6 | |
I recall this symptom in earlier versions of v3.2c Please check to make sure the patch install worked correctly. There has been discussion of not being able to install easily unless the user first backs out all patches (official and unofficial) so that dupatch encounters no conflicts.
